Nude mice (nu/nu on BALB/cAn background), maintained under conventional conditions, developed an acute moist dermatitis of the nose and occasionally the ears, with heavy contamination with Staphylococcus pyogenes. Only homozygotes over 10 weeks old were affected. Treatment with parenteral ampicillin or oral oxytetracycline was ineffective. Other conditions associated with the same organism were conjunctivitis and periorbital abscesses.

Patch testing of 40 patients with chronic inflammatory ear disease demonstrated medicament allergic contact dermatitis in 35%. The most frequent sensitizers were neomycin, framycetin, clioquinol and gentamicin. Although allergic contact dermatitis to dewaxing ear drops was unusual, irritant reactions were common.

There is increasing evidence that, as in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), deposition of immune complexes plays a role in the pathogenesis of dermatitis herpetiformis (DH). Dermatitis herpetiformis and SLE were diagnosed in a 15-year-old girl with Marfan's syndrome who died of cardiac tamponade secondary to cystic medial necrosis of the ascending aorta. The concurrence of these diseases suggests that predisposition to immune-mediated disorders may be associated with the expression of multiple clinical entities.

Seventeen patients with characteristic disseminated gonococcal arthritis-dermatitis syndrome were studied for the presence of immune complexes, and circulating gonococcal antigen and antibody. The two immune complex techniques, monoclonal rheumatoid factor assay and cryoglobulin survey, did not reveal any consistent abnormalities. Skin biopsies from 17 patients with coeliac disease, but without dermatitis herpetiformis, were examined by direct immunofluorescence. In none of them was IgA detectable. In contrast, IgA was present in dermal papillae and/or in relation to the dermo-epidermal junction in 80 out of 83 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis. These findings confirm that cutaneous deposition of IgA at these sites is a very characteristic feature of dermatitis herpetiformis and is unrelated to coeliac disease itself.

Criculating anti-basement membrane zone antibodies of the IgA class were detected in the sera of 2 or 6 dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) patients who had linear in-vivo-bound IgA deposits and in 1 of 42 DH patients who had granular vivo-bound IgA deposits. In the former 2 patients the circulating antibodies were localized ultrastructurally to the identical site where the in vivo-bound antibodies were localized and were bound by antigens in either the lamina lucida or the subbasal lamina anchoring fibril area of the basement membrane zone of normal human skin.

No statistical difference was found between the migration indices of nickel sensitive and control subjects using the leukocyte migration inhibition test with two concentrations of nickel sulphate.
