Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a disabling neurodevelopmental condition with complex etiology. Emerging evidence has pointed to maternal atopy as a possible risk factor. It is hypothesized that maternal atopic disease during pregnancy can lead to increased levels of inflammatory cytokines in fetal circulation via placental transfer or increased production. These cytokines can then pass through the immature blood-brain barrier, causing aberrant neurodevelopment via mechanisms including premature microglial activation. The objective of this study is to systematically review observational stud

PURPOSE: Generalized dermatitis (defined as histological spongiotic dermatitis affecting more than three anatomical areas of the skin surface) has many potential causes that mimic atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. If a treatable cause is missed, the patient may be treated with chronic immunosuppressive therapy that carries more risk than specific treatment for a disease mimicking dermatitis. Checklists have been shown to improve patient safety, primarily in procedural contexts. This work assessed the utility of a diagnostic checklist for subacute and chronic generalized dermatitis in p

OBJECTIVE: Atopy has been identified as a risk factor for osteoarthritis, but without specifying its impact on disease severity. We sought to investigate the association between atopy and the symptomatic and structural severity of knee and hip osteoarthritis.
METHODS: We used data from KHOALA, a French multicentre cohort of patients with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis (OA) investigating "atopic" subjects, defined as those with history of asthma and/or atopic dermatitis (AD) compared to "non-atopic" subjects. We compared: WOMAC pain, stiffness and function scores; and the proportion of having

Pain and itch are both important manifestations of various disorders, such as herpes zoster, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. Growing evidence suggests that both sensations have shared mediators, overlapping neural circuitry, and similarities in sensitization processes. In fact, pain and itch coexist in some disorders. Determining pharmaceutical agents and targets for treating pain and itch concurrently is of scientific and clinical relevance. Here we review the neurobiology of pain and itch and discuss the pharmaceutical targets as well as novel compounds effective for the concurrent treatme

Metabolic syndrome is currently considered to be a global epidemic, causing a significant increase in the cost of health care, apart from deteriorating the quality of life. Skin serves as a mirror of underlying metabolic sinister. Various dermatological conditions like psoriasis, acanthosis nigricans, lichen planus, acne vulgaris, acrochordons, atopic dermatitis, etc. have been reported to be associated with metabolic syndrome. We hereby present an evidence-based review of the various dermatological conditions and their association with the development of metabolic syndrome.

Dupilumab is a drug that has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medical Agency (EMA) for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in adults. An increase in frequency of conjunctivitis related to dupilumab treatment has been reported in recent publications and clinical trials. We report two steroid-dependent cases satisfactorily treated with cyclosporine 0.1% (Ikervis®). To our knowledge there are no reported cases of dupilumab-associated conjunctivitis treated with cyclosporine 0.1% (Ikervis®).

This manuscript provides a selection of dermatological research manuscripts published from September 2016 to August 2017. It is not an exhaustive review but rather a selection of manuscripts susceptible to modify the dermatological practice or affording new pathophysiologic mechanisms and new therapeutic approaches. The following areas of interest are concerned: recognition of dermatological images by artificial intelligence, new concepts in atopic dermatitis, wound repair and hair growth cycle. New data concerning melanomagenesis, epidermolysis bullosa simplex and drug eruption are also highl

Beta2 adrenergic receptors were identified in keratinocytes more than 30 years ago, but their function in the epidermis continues to be elucidated. Abnormalities in their expression, signaling pathway, or in the generation of endogenous catecholamine agonists by keratinocytes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cutaneous diseases such as atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, and psoriasis. New studies also indicate that the beta2AR also modulates keratinocyte migration, and thus can function to regulate wound reepithelialization. This review focuses on the function of these receptors in keratin

Disseminated herpes or vaccinia in the setting of underlying skin diseases is known as Kaposi's varicelliform eruption (KVE). Patients typically present with disseminated vesicopustules in the areas of the most severe involvement of their underlying skin disease. We report a case of eczema herpeticum in a woman with a long-standing history of atopic dermatitis (AD). This report also reviews the literature on eczema herpeticum and eczema vaccinatum (EV), summarizes clinical and histopathologic characteristics and treatment, and discusses the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control an

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is used as a standard monitoring method during anesthesia and operation. But during the operation of severely burnt patients, the electrodes for ECG cannot be placed on the ideal points for the standard limb leads. We tried the indirect monitoring of the ECG. We placed the electrodes on the sheet over the operating table, and connected the patient and the electrodes with water. By this way the ECG similar to the standard limb leads could be recorded. This method is useful for the patients, with such diseases as severe burn, severe atopic dermatitis and epidermolysis

Between 1981 and 1991, eleven infants (ranging in age from 2 to 9 months) were hospitalized in our department for evaluation of microscopically verified scabies infestations. Six presented signs of Norwegian scabies. All of the latter infants had been treated (prior to the scabies infestation) for long periods with topical steroids, in most cases for lesions suggestive of atopic dermatitis. We believe that the occurrence of the Norwegian form in these newborns was due to localized steroid-induced suppression of the normal immune response.

We present 9 patients with contact urticaria due to rubber gloves. Others have reported an increasing incidence of the disease among females, patients with atopic dermatitis, and hospital personnel. Our data confirm these results. Scarification with water, in which the suspected glove was incubated, is a simple diagnostic method, both reliable and cheap, in order to test the solubility of the allergen(s) in water. In one of our patients, we proved a type-I allergy caused by tetramethyl thiuram disulfide.

Children with atopic dermatitis and the dermato-respiratory++ syndrome were examined for the status of the hepatobiliary system and efficacy of the bile-expelling therapy. The patients mainly demonstrated abnormalities of the gall-bladder, dyskinesias of the biliary tract, occurring by the hyperkinetic+ type, chronic cholecystitis and chronic persistent hepatitis. More pronounced deviations were discovered in children with the dermato-respiratory syndrome. The use of the multimodality therapy including the hepatotropic agents turned out fairly effective, primarily in children with dyskinesias

Two groups of patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis respectively have been compared with regard to the results of thermal conductivity obtained by fluvographic measures. The abnormal reactions of vessels in both skin diseases initially showed completely opposite fluvographic data. As a result of clinical treatment in the maritime climate of the North Sea, the abnormal reactions of the vessels as well as pathologic skin lesions subsided. These findings are documented by fluvographic data catching up with those found in people without skin problems.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic recurrent inflammatory skin disease with a bipolar age distribution in childhood, adolescence and middle adulthood. Up to 50% of AD patients show ocular involvement, which can be potentially sight threatening. Clinically, the majority of cases present with atopic blepharo(kerato)conjunctivitis or atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC); other clinical variants from this group of inflammatory ocular surface diseases are keratoconjunctivitis vernalis in childhood and adolescence and allergic conjunctivitis. In addition to the aforementioned blepharitis, keratitis an

Cohort studies are of great importance in defining the mechanism responsible for the development of allergy-associated diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Although these disorders share genetic and environmental risk factors, it is still under debate whether they are linked or develop sequentially along an atopic pathway. The current study was aimed to determine the pattern of allergy sensitization in the Lithuanian birth cohort "Alergemol" (n = 1558) established as a part of the multicenter European birth cohort "EuroPrevall". Early sensitiz

Prednicarbate (Dermatop) was topically applied in 50 children suffering from inflammatory dermatoses. In 12 children, the courses of therapy were documented by photographs. Its rapid onset of action, its lacking suppression of the endogenic biosynthesis of cortisol, as well as its small antiproliferative effect on cutaneous fibroblasts suggest that prednicarbate bears only minor risks especially for children's skin.

Selective immunoglobulin M (IgM) deficiency (sIgMD) is a rare immunodeficiency disorder characterized by decreased serum levels of IgM. Symptoms of sIgMD include repeated infections and allergic manifestations such as asthma and allergic rhinitis. The etiology and pathology of sIgMD remain largely unknown. Moreover, no genetic cause of sIgMD and associated symptoms has been established. Herein, we describe a 47-year-old female with sIgMD who presented with repeated fevers of unknown cause since childhood. She was referred to our department because of recently developed severe dermatitis withou

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergic skin diseases such as urticaria, atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis are among the most common skin diseases with severe socioeconomic consequences. The pathogenesis of allergic skin diseases is complex. This review provides an overview of cytocines IL-17, IL-23, IL-31 and IL-33.
RECENT FINDINGS: Current research results show a variety of immunological processes in the pathogenesis of the allergic skin diseases, including the role of cytokines. In addition to the Th1 and Th2 immune response, the immune response via Th17 is becoming increasingly import

Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) reaction was developed by Ovary et al. as an animal model of mainly human type I allergic inflammation reaction. This is the most sensitive reaction for the detection of cutaneously sensitizing antibodies and provides a very effective means by which to investigate immunological reactions concerning the mechanisms of development and inhibition of allergic reactions, levels and specificity of antibodies, and the structure of antigens. These cutaneous inflammations mimic atopic dermatitis. Food ingestion has been pointed out as one of the worsened factors of at
