This research examines the detrimental effects of air pollution on mental well-being across different countries, exploring whether air pollution acts as a causal factor in deteriorating mental health. The findings demonstrate that heightened air pollution levels are correlated with an increase in mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, primarily through factors like healthcare costs, obesity, and employment instability. The impact is notably more severe in developing countries and colder regions. The study also explores gender differences, revealing that women in countries with…

Pancreatitis is a common disease in the United States, with the most likely etiologies being biliary tract disease and alcohol use. Infections with parasites such as Ascaris lumbricoides comprise a small percentage of pancreatitis cases in the United States, but they are a common etiology in developing countries. In the United States, the incidence of pancreatic and biliary ascariasis has been increasing because of the migration of people from endemic countries, as well as increased travel by Americans to such countries. Patients treated for this roundworm can have reinvasion for the same reas…

INTRODUCTION: Compared to developed countries, influenza vaccines have lower popularity in developing countries and are generally not given much attention. This paper analyzes the effect of China's policy of providing free influenza vaccine for the population aged 60 and above on vaccination take-up and health outcomes.
METHODS: Using nationwide survey data and combining differences across registered residence with differences across age cohorts included by the program. The identification strategy of difference-in-difference estimated the impact of free influenza vaccination policy on vaccina…

Abdominal pregnancy is a very rare obstetric complication which is seriously hazardous to the mother as well as the fetus. It poses a diagnostic challenge to this day. Both maternal and fetal mortality rates in such cases are high, as well as the malformation rate among the affected fetus. The best diagnostic tools are ultrasound and MRI. The availability of these instruments, and especially the latter, is scarce in developing countries, hence the higher rate of this type of pregnancy in these regions. The higher incidence of abdominal pregnancy in developing countries is also associated with …

Despite major progress in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment during the recent decades, hypertension remains the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality throughout the world. The prevalence of hypertension in developing countries continues to rise reaching alarming rates. Several risk factors of hypertension appear to be more common in developing countries than in developed countries. In Turkey, hypertension is a prevalent condition affecting approximately 22.5 million individuals. Hypertension control (defined as blood pressure <140/90 mm Hg) rate increased from 8.1% in…

Cervical cancer remains a major reproductive health problem among women especially in developing countries where about 190,000 women die from this disease annually. Despite efforts to reduce the burden of this disease, most attempts in low-resourced countries have not been successful partly from lack of awareness by women of this common cancer, as well as the role the human papilloma virus (HPV) plays in its aetiology and pathogenesis. To determine knowledge, attitudes and practice of women in Trinidad (a developing country) on HPV, cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine, we conducted a cross-sec…

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) in developed countries have poor nutritional status; however there is little data from developing countries. In Palawan, in the Philippines, the nutritional status of 31 children with CP was compared to that of their siblings (n = 20) and a control group of neighbourhood children (n = 64), matched for age and sex. The children's weights, heights and armspans were measured. The heights of children with CP could not be measured and were estimated from their armspans using an equation relating height to armspan in siblings and controls. Haemoglobin levels of the …

INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic inequalities in neonatal mortality are observed globally but gaps remain in the evidence from current reviews, specifically: a wider range of socioeconomic indicators at the individual, household and area level than previous reviews, and alternative time frames to define neonatal mortality. Thus, a comprehensive updated review of the literature is required, focusing on multiple measures of socioeconomic status and alternative time frames, to assess the relationship between maternal socioeconomic status and neonatal mortality in high-income countries.

Meta-analysis of growth data from over 50 low and low-middle income countries shows a consistent pattern of stunting and poor weight gain from about 3 months of age and persisting until at least 5 years. Children tend not to be wasted because their short stature offsets their underweight, leading to a rather adequately proportioned appearance. This frequently conceals the true levels of malnutrition in communities. At the macro-environmental level such growth faltering is due to the combined effects of poverty, food insecurity, low-dietary diversity, a highly infectious environment, poor washi

Kara Counselling and Training Trust (Kara) began offering voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV to the Zambian public in 1992. In the first years, clients came for testing because they were sick. These days however, more and more healthy young people are requesting tests for other reasons: they may be planning to get married, to have children or to engage in unprotected sex after being in an intimate relationship for some time. More than 20% of the clients now come for marriage-related reasons--as individuals or as couples. People want to know their HIV status so they can share it wit

Poverty and health are mutually reinforcing and deprivation in one area produces negative effects in the other. Unfortunately at the beginning of the 21st century, the number of people living in absolute poverty continues to rise with grim health consequences. Many studies have clearly established that health is related to and influenced by a complex of environmental, social and economic factors ultimately related to each other. Therefore, actions undertaken outside of the health sector are likely to have effects much greater than those obtained through the health sector alone. Thus, the count

Invasive meningococcal disease has a fulminant course and high mortality. Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A is predominantly responsible for meningococcal disease in India and the developing countries. Group B meningococcus, which is prevalent in the developing world is uncommon in India. We herein report the second case of group B meningococcal infection from the country, two decades after the reporting of the first case. Ineffective vaccines against serogroup B warrant the need for close surveillance of this disease.

For patients with small bowel and colonic perforations, a definitive diagnosis of the cause of perforation is not necessary before operation. Bowel obstruction and inflammatory bowel disease are the most common causes of nontraumatic intestinal perforations in industrialized countries, whereas infectious causes of intestinal perforations are more common in developing countries. Treatment of small bowel and colonic perforations generally includes intravenous antibiotics and fluid resuscitation, but the specific management of the bowel depends on the underlying cause of the perforation.

Traveler's diarrhea is a condition that disrupts work and vacation, and affects many women traveling from developed countries to developing countries. Specific food and hygiene education may help to decrease the occurrence of this common food and water-borne gastrointestinal infection. Probiotics rather than antibiotics are now among the recommendations for the prophylaxis of traveler's diarrhea. Treatment for traveler's diarrhea in mild cases may involve simply maintaining hydration. In moderate cases that disrupt the travel itinerary antibiotics and antimotility agents can be used.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a global health burden affecting developing and developed countries alike, estimated to affect one-third of the world's population. The most prevalent type of anemia globally is iron deficiency anemia. The groups most vulnerable to developing anemia include children, women (particularly pregnant women), and the elderly, primarily in developing nations. Anemia is also widespread in Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, where estimates suggest the disease affects up to 70% of women and children. The aim of the current review was to report the incidence of anemia among wom
