Return to sport after ulnar collateral ligament repair and reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Given the rising incidence of elbow ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury among young athletes in overhead sports, it is important to identify optimal treatments. The historic gold standard is UCL reconstruction. However, suture-augmented UCL repair techniques have become increasingly popular given their high rates of return to play in partial or full thickness avulsion UCL tears. The purpose of this study was to determine complications, clinical outcomes, and return to sport in UCL repair and reconstruction. We hypothesized that there would be a similar rate of return to sport in

Functional recovery and variability in response to spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation combined with activity-based training: Insights from a multi-case study.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation (scTS) combined with activity-based training (ABT) has shown promise for improving upper limb function after cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). However, factors underlying variability in functional recovery remain unclear. This study examined the functional recovery and inter-individual variability in response to scTS + ABT in individuals with chronic cervical SCI. DESIGN AND SETTING: Preliminary multi-case study with pre- and post-intervention evaluations conducted in a rehabilitation laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Five male adults with chronic c

Identification of intrinsic hepatotoxic compounds in Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. using machine-learning methods.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. (PM) is a herb, extracts of which have been used as Chinese medicine for years. Although it is believed to be beneficial to the liver, heart, and kidneys, it causes idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (DILI). AIM OF THE STUDY: We propose that the intrinsic DILI caused by natural products in PM (NPPM) is an important complementary mechanism to PM-related herb-induced liver injury, and aim to identify the ingredients with high DILI potential by machine learning methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and ninety-seven NPPM wer

Biodegradable pins for lateral condylar fracture of the humerus with an early delayed presentation in children: a retrospective study of biodegradable pin vs. Kirschner wire.

BACKGROUND: The clinical outcome of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for delayed lateral condylar fracture of the humerus (LCFH) varies in different studies, but ORIF for LCFH with an early-delayed presentation usually resulted in significant improvement of elbow function. Early delayed presentation is defined as a period of 3 to 12 weeks from the injury. This study aims to compare the clinical outcomes of biodegradable pin (BP) vs. Kirschner wire (KW) in the treatment of LCFH with an early delayed presentation. METHODS: LCFH with an early-delayed presentation treated with KW or BP

Use of the Spencer Technique on Collegiate Baseball Players: Effect on Physical Performance and Self-Report Measures.

CONTEXT: Repeated overhead throwing in baseball players alters range of motion (ROM), contributing to shoulder injury. The Spencer technique has been used, anecdotally, to reduce the effects of throwing-induced limitations in ROM. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effects of a single administration of the Spencer technique on the ROM and performance of collegiate baseball pitchers. METHODS: Pitchers from the Seton Hill University men's baseball team were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups: Spencer technique or sham therapy. The first week consisted of baseline outcome measurements (1 week befo

The impact of a patient's engagement in their health on the magnitude of limitations and experience following upper limb fractures.

AIMS: Patient engagement in adaptive health behaviours and interactions with their healthcare ecosystem can be measured using self-reported instruments, such as the Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13) and the Effective Consumer Scale (ECS-17). Few studies have investigated the influence of patient engagement on limitations (patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs). First, we assessed whether patient engagement (PAM-13, ECS-17) within two to four weeks of an upper limb fracture was associated with limitations (the Quick Disabilities of the Arm,

Sex- and Gender-specific Analysis in Orthopaedic Studies.

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic studies have reported the prevalence of injuries and outcomes after treatment in men and women patients, and although these differences have been recognized, few studies have evaluated for gender-specific injury patterns, disease progression, and treatment outcomes. A thorough understanding of gender-related differences is important to better individualize treatment and improve outcomes. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In this study, we sought (1) to determine the proportion of studies published in six orthopaedic journals that provided sex- or gender-specific analyses in 2016 and

Radiographic findings after radial head replacement.

BACKGROUND: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) has become the preferred treatment for displaced radial head and neck fractures that cannot be fixed. While good short-term results are reported, mid- to long-term radiographic findings such as loosening, stress shielding, and radiocapitellar arthritis are not uncommon. The aim of this study was to analyze and quantify radiographic findings after primary RHA. We hypothesized high rates of radiographic changes could be appreciated at mid-term follow-up. METHODS: Patients at a single institution who underwent RHA between 2006 and 2019 with at least six

Association Between Preoperative Patient-Reported Questionnaires and Outcomes After Ulnar Collateral Ligament Surgery.

BACKGROUND: While surgical interventions for ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries in throwing athletes have improved return-to-sport rates, predicting individual recovery timelines and the risk of complications remains a challenge. The influence of a patient's preoperative status, captured through patient-reported outcomes (PROs), on postoperative recovery milestones and complication risks is not well-defined. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine if baseline PROs and specific surgical variables predict critical postoperative milestones and adverse outcomes follow

Segmental metadiaphyseal humeral bone loss in pediatric trauma patients: a case series.

BACKGROUND: The management of posttraumatic bone loss is complicated and often requires complex reconstructive procedures. No options exist that are specific to the treatment of the growing skeleton that has intercalary bone loss. We have observed reconstitution of the humerus in 2 cases that have precluded extensive management. METHODS: Two pediatric patients sustained traumatic injuries to the upper extremities, including humeral bone loss, and are presented after spontaneous reconstitution of the segmental bone loss. RESULTS: With treatment restricted to soft-tissue injury and bone stabil
