Incisional Infection Postphacoemulsification in a Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis).

A 32-year-old captive female Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) was diagnosed with a hypermature resorbed cataract in the right eye and a mature cataract with phacolytic uveitis in the left eye. No other systemic or neurologic physical abnormalities were detected. The patient was considered blind from bilateral cataracts, and with a reduced quality of life, surgery was indicated to remove the mature cataract in the left eye. Before surgery, the phacolytic uveitis was treated in the left eye for 1 week with topical and systemic anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medication. Unilateral ph

Cancer cells enter dormancy after cannibalizing mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs).

Patients with breast cancer often develop malignant regrowth of residual drug-resistant dormant tumor cells years after primary treatment, a … the well-documented yet ill-defined clinical phenomenon of cancer cell cannibalism. This suspected feeding behavior was less appreciable in the presence of a rho kinase inhibitor and in 2D monolayer cocultures. Notably, cannibalism of MSCs enhanced survival of BCCs deprived of nutrients but suppressed their tumorigenicity, together suggesting the cancer cells ent …

Persistent infant crying and hyperactivity problems in middle childhood.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether persistent infant crying is associated with an increased risk for externalizing behavior problems in childhood. METHODS: Sixty-four infants who were referred for persistent crying in infancy (PC; mean age: 3.8 +/- 1.3 months) were reassessed at 8 to 10 years of age and compared with 64 classroom controls (CC). The major outcome measure was pervasive hyperactivity or conduct problems defined as parent, child, and teacher ratings that across informants were within the borderline/clinical range according to the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Resilience Metrics in Pigs: How Novelty and Environmental Complexity Shape Affective State and Neurobiological Outcomes.

This study evaluated whether the complexity and temporal dynamics of environmental enrichment during the nursery phase are associated with piglets' threat-related responses and affective state using a multimodal approach. We combined an Attentional Bias Test (ABT) with bioacoustic measures, Qualitative Behavior Assessment (QBA), and biomarkers (hair cortisol and serum BDNF). In a commercial nursery setting, 675 piglets were allocated to three treatments: UNI (single continuous item: chains), ALT (chains plus an additional object rotated weekly), and SIM (continuous simultaneous provision of mu

Effects of caloric restriction and different diet types on weight loss, metabolic profile and behavior of overweight and obese dogs.

The nutritional composition of the diet and food choices can influence weight loss program outcomes, although caloric deficit remains the main strategy for reducing body fat. This study compared weight loss, hematological parameters, biochemical profile, and behavior of overweight and obese dogs (n = 34) fed under caloric restriction using commercial dry food (n = 9), homemade food (n = 9), or mixed feeding (n = 16). Each dog was monitored for approximately three months (104 days) with monthly consultations for clinical evaluation, caloric intake adjustments, blood collection, and morphometric

Molecular Identification of Anopheles (Diptera: Culicidae) Species in Native Communities of a Northeastern Region of Peru.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a severe health problem in native communities of Condorcanqui in the Amazonas region of Peru. Recently, the number of malaria cases has increased considerably following a Plasmodium falciparum outbreak in 2019. However, there is no information on the anophelines acting as Plasmodium vectors in this area. This study aimed to identify Anopheles species circulating in previously unexplored native communities of Condorcanqui. Additionally, we sought to detect the presence of DNA from P. vivax and P. falciparum parasites in mosquitoes. METHODS: During three exploratory visit

A Targeted, Low-Throughput Compound Screen in a Drosophila Model of Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Identifies Simvastatin and BMS-204352 as Potential Therapies for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition for which there are no pharmacological therapies that effectively target its core symptomatology. Animal models of syndromic forms of ASD, such as neurofibromatosis type 1, may be of use in screening for such treatments. Drosophila larvae lacking Nf1 expression exhibit tactile hypersensitivity following mechanical stimulation, proposed to mirror the sensory sensitivity issues comprising part of the ASD diagnostic criteria. Such behavior is associated with synaptic dysfunction at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). Both pheno

Prefrontal Cortex Deep Brain Stimulation Improves Fear and Anxiety-Like Behavior and Reduces Basolateral Amygdala Activity in a Preclinical Model of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is being investigated for a number of psychiatric indications, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Preclinical studies continue to be a cornerstone for the development of new DBS applications. We investigate whether DBS delivered to the infralimbic cortex (IL), a region involved in mechanisms of stress resiliency, may counter behavioral abnormalities in rats that present persistent extinction deficits and long-term anxiety after exposure to fear conditioning. Rats undergoing fear conditioning/extinction were segregated into weak and strong extinction gr

Effects of paclitaxel on the development of neuropathy and affective behaviors in the mouse.

Paclitaxel, one of the most commonly used cancer chemotherapeutic drugs, effectively extends the progression-free survival of breast, lung, and ovarian cancer patients. However, paclitaxel and other chemotherapy drugs elicit peripheral nerve fiber dysfunction or degeneration that leads to peripheral neuropathy in a large proportion of cancer patients. Patients receiving chemotherapy also often experience changes in mood, including anxiety and depression. These somatic and affective disorders represent major dose-limiting side effects of chemotherapy. Consequently, the present study was designe

CREBBP mutations in individuals without Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome phenotype.

Mutations in CREBBP cause Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. By using exome sequencing, and by using Sanger in one patient, CREBBP mutations were detected in 11 patients who did not, or only in a very limited manner, resemble Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. The combined facial signs typical for Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome were absent, none had broad thumbs, and three had only somewhat broad halluces. All had apparent developmental delay (being the reason for molecular analysis); five had short stature and seven had microcephaly. The facial characteristics were variable; main characteristics were short palpeb

Neonatal serotonin reuptake inhibition reduces hypercaloric diet effects on fat mass and hypothalamic gene expression in adult rats.

BACKGROUND: Serotonin (5-HT) is involved in nervous system ontogenesis, and is important for neurotransmission and behavior modulation after the developmental stage. Alterations in 5-HT levels during the early period of life may signal to feeding behavior and hypothalamic genic expression changes in adulthood. OBJECTIVES: Investigate the effects of hypercaloric diet in adult rats submitted to neonatal serotonin reuptake inhibition on food intake, fat pad mass, plasmatic triglycerides/cholesterol and gene expression of hypothalamic peptides (POMC, NPY) and serotonin receptors (5-HT1B, 5-HT2C).…

Fatty liver-induced changes in stereotypic behavior in rats and effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 analog on stereotypy.

Although understanding the relation between psychotic behavior and immune abnormalities has been the focus of research for many years, it remains to be elucidated whether the changes in cytokine levels are part of etiology or a result of the stress associated with the disorder. In accordance with previous studies on changes in cytokine levels due to metabolic changes and psychosis, we hypothesized that fatty liver may potentiate apomorphine-induced stereotypy in a rodent model and that a synthetic glucagon-like peptide-1 analog exenatide would ameliorate this effect. In this study, 18 male Spr

Leptin signaling in the medial nucleus tractus solitarius reduces food seeking and willingness to work for food.

The adipose-derived hormone leptin signals in the medial nucleus tractus solitarius (mNTS) to suppress food intake, in part, by amplifying within-meal gastrointestinal (GI) satiation signals. Here we show that mNTS leptin receptor (LepRb) signaling also reduces appetitive and motivational aspects of feeding, and that these effects can depend on energy status. Using the lowest dose that significantly suppressed 3-h cumulative food intake, unilateral leptin (0.3 μg) administration to the mNTS (3 h before testing) reduced operant lever pressing for sucrose under increasing work demands (progressi

Cnidocyte discharge is regulated by light and opsin-mediated phototransduction.

BACKGROUND: Cnidocytes, the eponymous cell type of the Cnidaria, facilitate both sensory and secretory functions and are among the most complex animal cell types known. In addition to their structural complexity, cnidocytes display complex sensory attributes, integrating both chemical and mechanical cues from the environment into their discharge behavior. Despite more than a century of work aimed at understanding the sensory biology of cnidocytes, the specific sensory receptor genes that regulate their function remain unknown. RESULTS: Here we report that light also regulates cnidocyte functi

The pattern of c-fos activation in the CNS is related to behavior in the mudskipper, Periophthalmus cantonensis.

The effects of three types of behavior on c-fos activation in different brain regions of the mudskipper, Periophthalmus cantonensis, were studied by immunocytochemistry. Animals were divided into four groups: The control group did not undergo any specific treatment. The second group consisted of animals that were agitated for an hour with a glass rod at an irregular speed. The third group contained animals showing aggressive behavior during an hour of monitoring, i.e. documented territorial hostility by raising of dorsal fins and pursuit of intruders. In contrast to these three groups, which h
