Absence of the long head of the biceps tendon is a rare anomaly particularly when it occurs bilaterally. We present the magnetic resonance and arthroscopy findings in a patient with bilateral congenital absence of the long head of the biceps who presented with bilateral shoulder pain. Identification of a shallow or absent intertubercular groove may aid in differentiating congenital absence of the long head of the biceps from a traumatic tendon rupture.

Between 1997 and 2001, 58 patients received dorsal plating for comminuted distal radius fractures. In 8 of these patients, subsequent collapse led to palmar flexion deformity, loss of rotation, and hardware prominence. In retrospectively reviewing this subgroup's range of motion, radiographic volar tilt, and complications, including tenosynovitis and extensor tendon rupture, we found that (1) with both palmar and dorsal comminution of distal radius fractures, dorsal plating may not prevent palmar cortex collapse; (2) deformity of the distal radius fragment causes palmar displacement of the rad

The plasminogen/plasmin system in epidermis is thought to be the major protease involved in the delay of barrier recovery. However, little is known about the mechanism through which this system is activated. In order to clarify this mechanism, we first determined the distribution of proteolytic activity by using in situ zymography. As a result, plasminogen-activator activity was found to be present in the stratum corneum (SC) after barrier disruption. Next, SC subjected to repeated barrier disruption was collected to identify the protease. The protease was identified as urokinase-type plasmino

Itch is a subjective symptom; its magnitude (intensity) may be only estimated by the reports of patients or volunteers. We utilized a comparative screening method to identify and quantify the efficacy of topical antipruritics with a histamine-induced itch human model. Ten individuals responsive to histamine-induced itch sensation were enrolled. Both forearms served as test sites. Each test site was treated randomly either by histamine injection only or pretreated with a coded candidate formula for 30 min and then a histamine injection. Itch was experimentally induced in each test site by the i…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to test the validity of the controversial subdivision of essential tremor (ET) patients into electrophysiological subgroups.
METHODS: We evaluated a hundred patients with ET using surface electromyographic (EMG) recordings of antagonists forearm muscles and distinguished three groups: the first group showed synchronous activity of antagonistic muscles, the second showed alternating activity of antagonist muscles; and the third group consisted of patients whose EMG recordings were not compatible with the other two groups. We compared patients with synchronou…

Hirayama's disease (HD) is frequently found in Asia, and is rarely referred among westerners. It affects young people with higher incidence in males. It is a focal distal amyotrophy with unilateral or asymmetric bilateral involvement of C7, C8 and T1 innervated muscles. HD appears sporadically and has a benign evolution with clinical stabilization in around one year. We report four young male patients with clinical and electrophysiological alterations described in HD, which were followed-up during 5 years. Electromyographic findings were indicative of lower motor neuron involvement. We analyze

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare cause of intermittent claudication, occurring in approximately 1:1200 claudicants or 1:1000 of those undergoing arteriography. It is most often described in the popliteal artery and is characterised by a mucinous cyst located in the adventitia of the artery, the contents of which resemble those of a ganglion. The origins of adventitial cysts are unknown, but connections to adjacent synovial spaces have been identified, suggesting that the cyst is a variant of a ganglion. In this report, we discuss a rare case of severe mucoid degeneration of the intim

Hypertrichosis cubiti, also named hairy elbows syndrome (HES), is an uncommon variety of congenital, circumscribed hypertrichosis in which a remarkable amount of long vellus hair is localized on the extensor surfaces of the upper extremities. Usually, this condition appears in infancy, increases during early childhood, and regresses spontaneously at puberty. The mode of inheritance is not elucidated, and the condition presents in a sporadic or familial form. In most patients HES is not associated with any other physical abnormalities, although short stature and other developmental disorders ha

We describe a 62-year-old woman in whom skin biopsies verified the clinical diagnosis of granuloma annulare and neurologic and electromyographic studies confirmed the neurologic diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome. Short-term treatment with a low dose of chlorambucil taken orally was prescribed. Within weeks, the granuloma annulare had disappeared, and the clinical symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome had resolved. Electromyography showed variable improvement at the end of treatment and resolution at 9-month follow-up. Our case confirms that short-term treatment of granuloma annulare and associa

Two cases of hypoglossia congenita with anterior maxillo-mandibular fusion are reported. One is a case of hypoglossia with anterior maxillo-mandibular fusion and the other is a case of hypoglossia-hypodactylia with anterior maxillo-mandibular fusion. This condition presents the anaesthetist with the problem of airway management during the surgery. A simple technique using a nasopharyngeal tube was used for these two cases, with satisfactory results.

Over several years, the authors have devised a technique for compound island transplants of ulnar origin, harvested from the forearm's lower third, with reverse flow vascularization. Because of the variety of arterial ramifications, these transplants can consist: either of a simple cutaneous, superficial flexor tendon or ulnar fragment transplant, or, when associated, of compound cutaneous-tendinous, cutaneous-osseous and even cutaneous-tendinous-osseous transplants. These transplants, based on the clinical experience of 192 cases, can be used by retrograde rotation for a variety of indication…

A comparative study between three types of hypopharyngeal reconstruction after laryngopharyngectomy is presented by evaluation of the following parameters: complications, duration of hospitalization and postoperative swallowing time. Each group contains the five most recently cases treated at the E.N.T. department of the K.U. Leuven. In recent years, the following types of hypopharyngeal reconstruction were used: the pectoralis major flap, the free radial forearm flap and the revascularized jejunum interposition. For reconstruction of circumferential hypopharyngeal defects after total laryngop…
