Amdoparvoviruses are best known as agents of disease in carnivorans, but here we provide the first in-depth molecular evolutionary and ecological information for an amdoparvovirus in wild rodents (field voles, Microtus agrestis). We applied an RNA-sequencing approach in lung tissue that yielded high diagnostic sensitivity and multiple full or near-full coding sequences for the new virus (field vole amdoparvovirus, FVAV) in individual voles. FVAV is most similar to amdoparvoviruses in European foxes and wildcats. We present evidence that FVAV is an exogenous, endemic, high-prevalence infection

Understanding how mosquito community, host use, and environmental drivers vary across landscapes is critical for predicting vector‑borne disease risk. Virginia spans multiple ecoregions and broad elevational gradient, yet statewide surveillance remains limited and concentrated near urban centers. To address surveillance gaps, we surveyed mosquitoes across four ecologically distinct sites in Virginia during 2022 to evaluate species diversity, bloodfeeding patterns, and environmental predictors of occurrence. Using CDC light traps, gravid traps, and supplemental aspiration, we collected 7,781 mo

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome is thought to influence risk of childhood allergic diseases; however, the data on species-level links to childhood asthma and lung function are limited, and the role of host genetics in the gut-lung axis remains unclear.
METHODS: In a multicenter cross-sectional study of children with a history of bronchiolitis from the 35th Multicenter Airway Research Collaboration, we performed shotgun metagenomic profiling of stool samples obtained at age 6 years and examined associations of the gut microbiome with asthma prevalence and lung function. We also calculated polyg

Chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), is a key driver of global amphibian declines. The amphibian skin microbiome, which may include Bd-inhibitory bacteria, plays a crucial role in defence against infection, influencing host susceptibility and disease outcome. In this study, we investigated the skin microbiota and Bd infection in two frog species, Hyla meridionalis (Hm) and Pelophylax perezi (Pp), from northeastern Spain using full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We found that microbiota composition differed significantly between frog species, with Pp har

Food-grade microbial bioprocessing requires genetically stable and antibiotic-free host-vector systems that are compatible with food-related applications. However, the use of Limosilactobacillus fermentum as a biomanufacturing chassis is limited by inefficient DNA delivery and the lack of strain-adapted food-grade selection strategies. In this study, a proof-of-concept, lactose-complemented antibiotic-free host-vector framework was established in L. fermentum 217 - 82. An efficient electrotransformation protocol was first established as an enabling step for host engineering, yielding a transfo

Fasciola gigantica, the predominant cause of fasciolosis in tropical regions, is a major cause of economic loss to the global farming community and is also recognised as a significant human pathogen. The surface tegument of the fluke, situated as it is at the host-parasite interface, is a metabolically active and highly dynamic secretory organ mainly concerned with ensuring the survival of the parasite in a hostile immunological and physiochemical environment. The period of migration of the juvenile fluke through the hepatic parenchyma of the host is critical in establishing a mutually sustain

Cellulosic biomass represents a promising feedstock for biofuel and biochemical production. However, its recalcitrant structure strongly hinders enzymatic degradation. Cellulosomes are large multienzyme complexes, highly efficient at degrading cellulose. A cellulase in a cellulosome has a dockerin domain that binds to a cohesin module on the CipA (cellulosome integrating protein A). In a native cellulosome all cohesins are identical, so that the cellulase types and their positions in a CipA cannot be controlled. Here, we constructed the largest designer CipA known to date. Using innovative tec

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), modulates host immune responses by regulating various cytokines. Precise regulation of these cytokines renders the host pathogen-free, whereas their dysregulation increases the susceptibility to infection. Hence, induction of host protective cytokines using immunomodulators to promote M. tuberculosis clearance has a rewarding impact in the context of TB treatment. This study explored the immunomodulatory activity of 4-(Benzyloxy)phenol (4-BOP) in mycobacteria infected differentiated THP-1 cells through IL-3

A growing number of studies has highlighted the importance of coinfections in eco-evolutionary processes underlying host-parasite interactions and the resulting epidemiology of zoonotic agents. Small mammals, and particularly rodents, are known to be important reservoirs of many zoonotic pathogens, such as Toxoplasma gondii and Trypanosoma lewisi, that are responsible for toxoplasmosis and atypical trypanosomiasis in humans, respectively. Laboratory experiments on rodent models have shown that primary infection with T. lewisi increases the host sensitivity to other parasites, including T. gond

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a growing public health concern, with complex interactions within host systems contributing to its impact. This study employs multi-omics approaches to uncover therapeutic targets and potential drug repurposing opportunities to better understand Mpox's molecular pathogenesis. We developed an in silico host-pathogen interaction (HPI) network and applied weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to explore interactions between Mpox and host proteins. Subtype-specific host-pathogen protein-protein interaction networks were constructed, and key modules from the HPI a

Host-microbial co-metabolism products are being increasingly recognised to play important roles in physiological processes. However, studies undertaking a comprehensive approach to consider host-microbial metabolic relationships remain scarce. Metabolomic analysis yielding detailed information regarding metabolites found in a given biological compartment holds promise for such an approach. This work aimed to explore the associations between host plasma metabolomic signatures and gut microbiota composition in healthy adults of the Milieu Intérieur study. For 846 subjects, gut microbiota composi

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Up to a third of the global human population is estimated to carry a T. gondii infection, which can result in severe complications in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Humans and animals can become infected by ingesting either tissue cysts containing T. gondii bradyzoites, from raw or undercooked meat, or sporulated oocysts from environmental sources. T. gondii oocysts are released in the faeces of cats and other felids, which are the parasite's definitive hosts, leading to environmental contamination

Chlamydia are Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens responsible for a variety of disease in humans and animals worldwide. Chlamydia trachomatis causes trachoma in disadvantaged populations, and is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in humans, causing reproductive tract disease. Antibiotic therapy successfully treats diagnosed chlamydial infections, however asymptomatic infections are common. High-throughput transcriptomic approaches have explored chlamydial gene expression and infected host cell gene expression. However, these were performed on large ce

BACKGROUND: The need for wildlife health surveillance as part of disease control in wildlife, domestic animals and humans on the global level is widely recognized. However, the objectives, methods and intensity of existing wildlife health surveillance programs vary greatly among European countries, resulting in a patchwork of data that are difficult to merge and compare. This survey aimed at evaluating the need and potential for data harmonization in wildlife health in Europe. The specific objective was to collect information on methods currently used to estimate host abundance and pathogen pr

Avian coccidiosis is a widespread and economically significant disease of poultry. It is an enteric disease caused by several protozoan Eimeria species. Eimeria belongs to the phylum Apicomplexa, which exhibits an unusual mechanism of host cell invasion. During invasion of host cells, the protein apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) is essential for invasion of Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium. Contrary to the roles of AMA1 during host cell invasion in T. gondii and Plasmodium, the precise functions of Eimeria AMA1 (EtAMA1) are unclear. In order to study the functions of EtAMA1, a yeast two-hybrid

Ocular diplostomiasis is caused by trematode species in the family Diplostomidae, specifically those in the genera Austrodiplostomum, Diplostomum, and Tylodelphys. Diplostomid trematodes are globally distributed parasites of fish. Heavy infections of diplostomids that parasitize the eyes of fish can result in acute mortality while chronic infections are often characterized by impaired vision or blindness. In the southeastern United States, commercial catfish production is threatened by piscivorous birds and the many trematode species that parasitize them. The life cycles typically involve a pi

Aenasius bambawalei Hayat (Encyrtidae: Hymenoptera) has been synonymized with Aenasius arizonensis (Girault) is a small, newly discovered endoparasitoid of the cotton mealybug Phenacoccuss solenopsis Tinsley (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera), which completes its life cycle inside the body of its host and it is a potential insect control tool. Despite the acquired knowledge regarding host-parasitoid interaction, little information is available on the factors of parasitoid origin able to modulate mealybug physiology. The components of A. arizonensis venom have not been well studied but venom from othe

Rodents are important reservoirs for a large number of zoonotic pathogens. We examined the occurrence of 11 viral, bacterial, and parasitic agents in rodent populations in Austria, including three different hantaviruses, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, orthopox virus, Leptospira spp., Borrelia spp., Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii, and Toxoplasma gondii. In 2008, 110 rodents of four species (40 Clethrionomys glareolus, 29 Apodemus flavicollis, 26 Apodemus sylvaticus, and 15 Microtus arvalis) were trapped at two rural sites in Lower Austria. Morphometric variation with respect to wing venation patterns was explored for 777 specimens of the Bactrocera tau complex collected in Thailand (nine provinces) and Laos (one locality). Cryptic species B. tau A and C were identified based on their wing shape similarity to published reference images. In Thailand, the B. tau A species was identified in four provinces and the B. tau C species in seven provinces, and both species in one locality of Laos. The objective of the study was to explain the geographic variation of size and shape in two cryptic species collected from the same host (Momord

Viruses are obligate intracellular pathogens whose biological success depends upon replication and packaging of viral genomes, and transmission of progeny viruses to new hosts. The biological success of herpesviruses is enhanced by their ability to reproduce their genomes without producing progeny viruses or killing the host cells, a process called latency. Latency permits a herpesvirus to remain undetected in its animal host for decades while maintaining the potential to reactivate, or switch, to a productive life cycle when host conditions are conducive to generating viral progeny. Direct in
