Individual, familial, friends-related and contextual predictors of early sexual intercourse.

This study examined the unique and simultaneous contribution of adolescents' characteristics, parent-child relationship and friends' characteristics on early sexual intercourse, while accounting for family status. A longitudinal multi-sample design was used. The first sample was recruited in a suburban context (n = 265; 62% girls) and the second sample in an urban setting (n = 136; 61% girls). All predictors were measured in Grade 8 and age at first intercourse was assessed yearly for three years. Being in a non-intact family, low parental control, high antisocial behaviors, low self-disclosur

Seafood hypersensitivity in mite sensitized individuals: is tropomyosin the only responsible allergen?

BACKGROUND: Seafood allergy has been related to mite sensitization, mainly mediated by the muscle protein tropomyosin. OBJECTIVES: To determine the correlation between seafood hypersensitivity and mite sensitization (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Chortoglyphus arcuatus, a highly prevalent storage mite in Spain) and to investigate the implication of tropomyosin in cross-reactivity. METHODS: Patients from Northwest Spain were divided into 2 groups. The mite-seafood group contained 30 allergic mite individuals with a clinical history of food hypersensitivity. The mite group contained 40 in

Trait and neurobiological correlates of individual differences in dream recall and dream content.

Individuals differ greatly in their dream recall frequency, in their incidence of recalling types of dreams, such as nightmares, and in the content of their dreams. This chapter reviews work on the waking life correlates of these differences between people in their experience of dreaming and reviews some of the neurobiological correlates of these individual differences. The chapter concludes that despite there being trait-like aspects of general dream recall and of dream content, very few psychometrically assessed correlates for dream recall frequency and dream content have been found. Effect of a yoga programme on an individual with Parkinson's disease: a single-subject design.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of eight weekly yoga sessions on balance, mobility and reported quality of life of an individual with Parkinson's disease (PD). Furthermore, to test the methodology in order to inform future research. METHOD: A 69-year-old female with an 8-year history of PD (Hoehn and Yahr rating two) was selected for the study, which had a single subject ABA design. A 1-week baseline was followed by an 8-week period of weekly 60 min yoga classes and a further 5 weeks of treatment withdrawal. Main outcome measures used were Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go (TUG) an

Impact of chronic kidney disease on survival after amputation in individuals with diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that influence survival after diabetes-related amputations. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We abstracted medical records of 1,043 hospitalized subjects with diabetes and a lower-extremity amputation from 1 January to 31 December 1993 in six metropolitan statistical areas in south Texas. We identified mortality in the 10-year period after amputation from death certificate data. Diabetes was verified using World Health Organization criteria. Amputations were identified by ICD-9-CM codes 84.11-84.18 and categorized as foot, below-knee amputation, and above-knee amput

Evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders in individuals with ASDs: a consensus report.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are common and clinically heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders. Gastrointestinal disorders and associated symptoms are commonly reported in individuals with ASDs, but key issues such as the prevalence and best treatment of these conditions are incompletely understood. A central difficulty in recognizing and characterizing gastrointestinal dysfunction with ASDs is the communication difficulties experienced by many affected individuals. A multidisciplinary panel reviewed the medical literature with the aim of generating evidence-based recommendations for di

Predictability of individualized dosage regimens of carbamazepine and valproate mono- and combination therapy.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Many investigators agree that appropriate rational utilization of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) with Bayesian feedback dosage adjustment facilitates epilepsy treatment with carbamazepine (CBZ) and/or valproate (VPA) by increasing the seizure control and safety, as well as by reducing treatment costs. In previous works we have developed and used in clinical practice population pharmacokinetic (PK) models of different dosage forms for VPA and post-induction CBZ behaviour, as well as for combined therapy with CBZ plus another 'old' antiepileptic drug (AED). Brief report: Repetitive behaviours in Greek individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

The main objective of this study was to examine the factor structure of restricted repetitive behaviours (RRBs) in a sample of 205 Greek individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), using the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R). Results show that the structure of RRBs in this Greek sample can be described using a 2-factor solution. The current study provides further, cross-cultural support for the distinction between a "high-order" factor reflecting compulsions, rituals, sameness, and restricted behaviours (CRSRB) and a "low-order" factor reflecting stereotyped movements and self-inj

Individual characteristics associated with PBDE levels in U.S. human milk samples.

BACKGROUND: Reported polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations in human samples in the United States have been higher than in Europe and Asia. Little is known about factors that contribute to individual variability in body burden. OBJECTIVE: In this large study we measured PBDE concentrations in human milk from the United States during 2004-2006. We assessed characteristics associated with concentrations in milk and change in milk concentration between 3 and 12 months postpartum. METHODS: We analyzed 303 milk samples obtained 3 months postpartum for PBDEs. A second sample was analy

Automatic avoidance tendencies in individuals with contamination-related obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

We used an approach-avoidance task (AAT) to examine response to threatening stimuli in 20 individuals high in contamination-related obsessive-compulsive symptoms (HCs) and 21 individuals low in contamination-related obsessive-compulsive symptoms (LCs). Participants were instructed to respond to contamination-related and neutral pictures by pulling a joystick towards themselves or by pushing it away from themselves. Moving the joystick changed the size of the image to simulate approaching or distancing oneself from the object. Consistent with our hypothesis, the HC group was significantly slowe

Safety considerations when promoting exercise in individuals with serious mental illness.

Histories and physical exams, completed prior to starting a weight loss program, showed that 52% (N=106) had high risk for coronary artery disease (CAD), 40% had difficulty performing a tandem gait (indicator of balance), and 30% had an existing musculoskeletal disorder. These risks are realistic concerns when recommending exercise and/or walking.

Self-efficacy contributes to individual differences in subjective improvements using CPAP.

PURPOSE: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) improves depressive symptoms and daytime sleepiness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, there is variability in response to CPAP. This study examined individual differences in the daily associations between CPAP use and improvements in affect and sleepiness patients beginning CPAP. METHODS: This observational repeated measures study involved 31 CPAP-naïve patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea at an academic sleep disorders center. Patients completed pre-treatment assessments of OSA knowledge, expectations for C

Sustained hyperoxia stabilizes breathing in healthy individuals during NREM sleep.

The present study was designed to determine whether hyperoxia would lower the hypocapnic apneic threshold (AT) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Nasal noninvasive mechanical ventilation was used to induce hypocapnia and subsequent central apnea in healthy subjects during stable NREM sleep. Mechanical ventilation trials were conducted under normoxic (room air) and hyperoxic conditions (inspired PO(2) > 250 Torr) in a random order. The CO(2) reserve was defined as the minimal change in end-tidal PCO(2) (PET(CO(2))) between eupnea and hypocapnic central apnea. The PET(CO(2)) of the apne

[Comparison of polypeptide compositions from individual Agelena orientalis spider venoms].

Spider venoms are peculiar combinatory libraries of polypeptide molecules that specifically affect various cell targets. However, the question has remained up to now regarding whether the observed diversity of the polypeptides results from the synthesis of the complete library of these molecules by each individual spider or is due to the peculiarity of each zooid producing a limited set of components. We studied the composition of the mixed venom taken from several dozens of zooids of the Central Asian species of the Agelena orientalis and compared it with the venoms of 20 individual spiders o

Bidirectional interference between speech and postural stability in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

Because people frequently talk while engaged in other activities, and because Parkinson's disease (PD) is known to diminish multi-tasking performance, this study examined dual task interference between speaking and postural stability in nine individuals with PD, seven age-matched, and 10 healthy young controls. Participants repeated a target utterance and performed a rise to toes task in both single and dual task conditions. Diphthong transitions were measured from audio recordings and postural variables reflecting planning, coordination, and stability were derived from a multi-camera motion c
