Estimating Visceral Adiposity From Wrist-Worn Accelerometry.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is a key marker of both metabolic health and habitual physical activity (PA). Excess VAT is highly correlated with type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. The mechanistic basis for this pathophysiology relates to overloading the liver with fatty acids. VAT is also a highly labile fat depot, with increased turnover stimulated by catecholamines during exercise. VAT can be measured with sophisticated imaging technologies, but can also be inferred directly from PA. We tested this relationship using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 20

Ultrasound-Enhanced Data-Driven Modeling for Characterizing Natural Wrist Tremor Dynamics.

The complex interplay of neural and muscular activity underlying involuntary rhythmic wrist tremors poses significant challenges for effective symptom management, particularly with identifying key tremor characteristics such as dominant frequency and amplitude. This study introduces an ultrasound (US)-enhanced data-driven modeling framework that uses wrist angle kinematics as state variables, which are augmented with muscle-specific ultrasound data inputs. We explore three modeling configurations: a wrist kinematics-only baseline model, a fixed-parameter US-augmented model, and a real-time ada

Data-Driven Study on Why Wrist Pulse Can Assess Health Conditions.

Pulse diagnosis (PD) is a traditional diagnostic technique in which physicians palpate the wrist pulse at the radial artery to evaluate an individual's health status. However, the scientific validity of PD has been questioned due to the lack of quantitative and objective evidence. In particular, variations in wrist pulse waves across different health conditions remain underexplored, and the correlations between pulse wave characteristics and physiological states are not yet well understood. To fill these gaps, we design a data-driven analysis architecture that integrates a quantitative analysi

Machine learning-based screening of sarcopenia in elderly women using non-invasive physiological signals.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is the age related loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, which increases frailty, fall risk, and healthcare costs. Conventional imaging based diagnostics are costly and impractical in routine clinical or community settings. We investigated whether noninvasive physiological signals, namely electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG), and center of pressure (COP), can serve as biomarkers for sarcopenia when analyzed with machine learning models. METHODS: In this study, 80 Korean women aged 65 to 75 years were assessed for sarcopenia using the 2019 Asian Working

Robust Multimodal Learning Framework for Intake Gesture Detection Using Contactless Radar and Wearable IMU Sensors.

Automated food intake gesture detection is a critical task in the domain of dietary monitoring, with the potential to objectively and continuously record individuals' eating patterns, thereby improving the quality of life (QoL) for diverse populations. Wrist-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs), have been extensively explored for this task and have demonstrated promising performance. Recently, ambient-based contactless radar sensor, has also shown feasibility for intake gesture detection. This study aims to investigate whether the complementary features of wearable and contactless sensors ca

A mathematical and computational framework to predict the time to and recovery from osteoporosis via serial DEXA scans: a proof-of-concept model for digital decision support.

BACKGROUND: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is the diagnostic standard for osteoporosis, yet its serial data remains underutilised in predictive analytics. To our knowledge, no published model provides explicit age-based predictions of osteoporosis onset or recovery using serial DEXA T-score trajectories. This proof-of-concept study describes a deterministic mathematical framework for predicting time to osteoporosis (TTO) and time to exit osteoporosis (TEO), defined as the age at which a patient's T-score trajectory reaches or exits the threshold of - 2.5. METHODS: We developed two de

IMU-Based Pelvic Rotation Detection: A Novel Dataset, Benchmark Classifiers, and Sensor Placement Optimization.

Prolonged sedentary behavior has been a major public health concern strongly associated with low back pain (LBP), the leading cause of disability worldwide. Monitoring pelvic rotations (PRs), a key factor in postural control, is crucial for LBP prevention and management. However, PR detection remains underexplored, and publicly available datasets are lacking. This study comprehensively investigates the feasibility of using inertial measurement units (IMUs) and machine learning (ML) to recognize PRs. We introduce a novel public dataset comprising over 15 hours of high-resolution IMU data from t

Supervised machine learning model to predict total knee replacement in a large osteoartrhitis real-world evidence dataset using retrospectively 20-year insurance data from Israel.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) affects over 500 million patients worldwide, significantly impacting their quality of life and independence. The incidence of OA is expected to rise due to aging populations and increasing obesity rates. Traditionally considered a degenerative, age-related disease, OA is now recognized as heterogeneous with different phenotypes. This study aimed to evaluate the use of real-world evidence (RWE) data for phenotyping OA and developing a predictive model for total knee replacement (TKR) using insurance data from Israel. METHODS: The study utilized anonymized electro

Development of an AI chatbot to support shared decision-making in rheumatoid arthritis: a two-phase usability study.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making is central to the care of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, particularly when adjusting treatment. Conventional decision aids convey balanced information about therapeutic options but often fail to help patients clarify their preferences. We aimed to develop and evaluate a generative artificial intelligence chatbot to facilitate preference deliberation after exposure to standard decision aids during the shared decision-making process. METHODS: Following the International Patient Decision Aid Standards and contemporary rheumatoid arthritis treatment guidelin

Patient and surgeon perspectives on shared decision-making in hip and knee osteoarthritis treatment: a qualitative exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Navigating the various surgical and non-surgical options for treating osteoarthritis (OA) presents a significant challenge for patients. Determining the optimal treatment involves carefully weighing each option’s benefits, risks, and consequences. What constitutes the “best treatment”—whether surgical or non-surgical—is often subjective and shaped by individual circumstances and personal preferences. While shared decision-making, supported by in-consult patient decision aids, has proven valuable in helping patients and clinicians clarify values and choose the most suitable treatmen

A Deep Learning-Based Approach for the Diagnostic of Brucellar Spondylitis in Magnetic Resonance Images.

Brucellar spondylitis (BS), a prevalent zoonotic disease caused by Brucella, poses a significant global health threat. Accurate and timely diagnosis of BS is crucial for effective treatment; however, no specialized deep learning model has been developed for detecting BS in MR images. In this study, we proposed Brucella Spondylitis MRI Diagnosis Network (BSMRINet), a fully automated diagnostic framework designed for the detection of BS from T2-weighted (T2W) MR images. The model was developed and validated using 582 cohorts collected from four hospitals between January 2018 and August 2023. The

Edge Extension for Missing Anatomical Features: A Mask-Guided Spatial Diffusion Framework for Ultrasound Scoliosis Image Outpainting.

Accurate scoliosis diagnosis relies on precise spinal curvature measurement, traditionally using radiographic Cobb's angle. Ultrasound imaging offers a radiation-free alternative via ultrasound curve angle (UCA) estimation, but its clinical utility is limited by incomplete anatomical information due to the restricted field of view (FOV) during scanning. This hinders key tasks like segmentation and landmark detection, restricting ultrasound's broader adoption in scoliosis assessment. To address this challenge, we propose an edge-aware outpainting diffusion framework that restores missing spinal

Context-agnostic machine learning for Parkinson's disease motor symptom detection using wearable sensors.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a rapidly growing neurodegenerative disorder with various motor and non-motor symptoms, affecting millions of people worldwide. These symptoms demonstrate significant medication-related fluctuations and inter-patient variability, highlighting the need for personalized management. Objective longitudinal symptom monitoring through wearable sensors and machine learning can support individualized care. However, to date, most approaches have been tested in lab-constrained environments. This study aims to develop a modular pipeline to automatically detect three car

Joint Dynamic Brain Network Estimation and Graph Representation Learning for the Recognition of Neurological Disorders.

Recently, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown significant improvements in the recognition of neurological disorders by incorporating brain networks/graphs. However, most existing approaches have three main limitations. First, these methodologies rely on precomputed brain networks as input, typically derived from statistical metrics (e.g., Pearson correlation), which are inherently not learnable. Second, methods often assume that the magnitude of the brain interactions remains constant across the whole scan duration. Third, representations produced by models often lack interpretability and

Assessment of the use of electronic medical records system and barriers in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Currently the use of electronic medical records (EMR) systems emerged globally especially OpenMRS to significantly improve healthcare delivery. However, challenges persist in achieving full EMR adoption, particularly in developing countries. In Rwanda, OpenMRS system was introduced in 2013 as a strategy to align digital health to the country’s information and communication technologies (ICT)-for-development agenda. Reports from healthcare providers indicate varying EMR adoption levels in health facilities in Rwanda. This study aims to assess the current usage of EMR and identify im

CSFBNet: Cosine-Consistency Filtering and Dual-Stream Complementary Semantic Guidance for Prostate Cancer MRI Segmentation.

Accurate prostate and prostate cancer MRI segmentation remains challenging because prostate structures and lesions may be small, low-contrast, have blurred boundaries, and be strongly affected by surrounding tissues. To address these issues, this study proposes CSFBNet, a segmentation network that combines cosine-consistency-based feature filtering with foreground-background complementary semantic guidance. Specifically, the cosine-consistency sparse selection block (CSSB) selects more reliable shallow features and reduces redundant background responses. The foreground-background adaptive conv

NTSM: Neurophysiology-Guided Tri-Stream Selective State Space Model for Real-Time Driver Fatigue Detection with EEG-EOG Signals.

Driver fatigue is a leading contributor to fatal traffic accidents globally, and Electroencephalogram (EEG)-Electrooculogram (EOG) multi-modal systems are the gold standard for objective fatigue detection. However, existing Transformer-based methods face critical bottlenecks of high quadratic complexity and oversimplified feature fusion that neglects intrinsic brain-eye neurophysiological couplings. To address these issues, this paper proposes NTSM, a neurophysiology-guided tri-stream architecture integrating the Mamba-based selective State Space Model (SSM) with four specialized modules, i.e.

A framework for extraction of clinical information from radiological mammography reports using large language models and retrieval augmented generation.

BACKGROUND: Extracting structured information from free-text radiology reports is essential for downstream clinical analysis and decision support. In mammography, this challenge is amplified by heterogeneous writing styles, the absence of standardized terminology across institutions, and limited availability of annotated Spanish datasets. Large language models (LLMs) offer a compelling alternative by enabling few-shot generalization without task-specific fine-tuning. METHODS: We propose a structured Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework that leverages annotated mammography reports as

TumorTwin: a Python framework for patient-specific digital twins in oncology.

BACKGROUND: Advances in the theory and methods of computational oncology have enabled accurate characterization and prediction of tumor growth and treatment response on a patient-specific basis. This capability can be integrated into a digital twin framework in which bi-directional data-flow between the physical tumor and the digital tumor facilitate dynamic model re-calibration, uncertainty quantification, and clinical decision-support via recommendation of optimal therapeutic interventions. However, many digital twin frameworks rely on bespoke implementations tailored to each disease site, m
