A Qualitative Analysis of Multi-level Influences on Chronic Pain among Spanish-speaking Older Latino Adults in a Community Clinic in the United States.

Spanish-speaking older Latino adults living with chronic musculoskeletal pain in the United States (US) experience worse pain outcomes than English-speaking and non-Latino older adults. This is partly because most pain interventions have been designed and tested primarily among English-speaking individuals. To address this, existing interventions for chronic musculoskeletal pain should be tailored to reflect the multilayered factors that impact and are impacted by chronic pain identified by Spanish-speaking older Latino adults. As such, we conducted three focus groups and five individual inter

Lived experiences of Ethiopian women post-mastectomy without reconstruction: findings and guidelines from a feminist phenomenological study.

PURPOSE: The lack of evidence-based knowledge about women's experiences after mastectomy has serious implications for mastectomy-supportive care in the Ethiopian health system. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of women who had a mastectomy without reconstruction and consequently develop guidelines for healthcare providers to enhance supportive care. METHODS: This qualitative study is grounded in feminist values and Heidegger's philosophy of existential phenomenology. It was conducted at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College, one of the largest hosp

Patient-Reported Barriers to On-Time Surveillance After Successful Endoscopic Eradication of Barrett's Esophagus Neoplasia: A Multicenter Qualitative Interview Study.

INTRODUCTION: Ongoing surveillance after successful endoscopic eradication therapy for Barrett's esophagus (BE)-related neoplasia is essential to detect and manage recurrence. Despite established surveillance interval recommendations after complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia (CE-IM), patient compliance with repeat endoscopy is frequently suboptimal. Understanding patient drivers to adherence is essential to inform interventions that address the high rates of overdue surveillance and loss to follow-up. METHODS: Patients with BE-related neoplasia who achieved CE-IM were eligible for i

Subjective theory of illness, disease perception, and attitude toward anticoagulation therapy in patients with unprovoked venous thromboembolism-the qualitative Dalí study.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to anticoagulant therapy in patients with unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) might be influenced by disease perception. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to understand disease perception, including subjective theory of illness, and attitude toward anticoagulation therapy in patients with unprovoked VTE. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study encompassing semistructured interviews of patients with unprovoked VTE 3 to 12 months from diagnosis with a medical recommendation for long-term anticoagulation therapy. Patients were asked about diagnosis, self-perceived reasons for VTE

Beyond Continence: Long-Term Psychosocial Adaptation Following Mainz II Urinary Diversion for Incurable Obstetric Fistula in Rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula remains a debilitating maternal health condition, particularly in low-income countries. The Mainz II pouch, a continent urinary diversion, is a last-resort surgical option for irreparable fistulas. Despite surgical success, little is known about long-term psychosocial outcomes in such settings. This study aimed to explore the long-term lived experiences and quality of life outcomes of women in rural Uganda who underwent the Mainz II pouch procedure for incurable obstetric fistula, with a focus on post-surgical equity and adaptation. METHODS: This qualitative stud

Understanding the Unfamiliar: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Pediatric Residents' Learning about Children with Severe Motor and Intellectual Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMIDs) require complex care involving both technical skill and emotional presence. Pediatric residents often lack meaningful exposure to such patients, and little is known about how they make sense of these learning experiences. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using an interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore how pediatric residents experienced a three-month rotation at a facility for children with SMID in Japan. Four residents were interviewed twice during their rotations. Interviews were transcribed

Development of patient-reported outcome for spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a disease-specific patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure for spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA). METHODS: A three-stage sequential design was adopted. Items were generated through qualitative interviews with patients with SBMA and expert review, refined using quantitative analyses, and evaluated for reliability and validity in independent cohorts from Japan and the United States. RESULTS: Interviews with 12 patients generated 234 candidate items, which were refined into a final 31-item SBMAPRO comprising five domains based on an online survey of 10

Negotiating uncertainty and responsibility after a vestibular schwannoma diagnosis: a qualitative study of meaning-making and surgical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: A diagnosis of vestibular schwannoma (VS) confronts patients with complex treatment decisions under conditions of uncertainty. While previous research has focused on treatment outcomes, symptom trajectories, and predictors of treatment choice, less is known about how patients psychologically process the diagnosis and construct meaning before surgery. This study explored how patients experience uncertainty, regain agency, and negotiate responsibility during the preoperative period. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve patients who underwent surgical resectio

Development and qualitative validation of a virtual reality simulation program for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and delirium superimposed on dementia: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD) can lead to severe complications if they are not accurately identified and managed. Effective dementia care therefore requires clear differentiation, systematic assessment, and appropriate nursing interventions. This study aimed to develop VRDementia: BPSD/DSD, a virtual reality simulation program, and to qualitatively examine its validity and usability as a development-based pilot study. METHODS: Using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), the p

Delay in seeking medical care among breast cancer patients with malignant fungating wounds and their caregivers: a qualitative dyadic study.

BACKGROUND: Malignant fungating wounds in breast cancer cause distressing physiological symptoms and profound psychological burdens. Despite the severe and visible nature of malignant fungating wounds, paradoxical care-seeking delays persist, severely impacting patients' quality of life and survival. However, the exact mechanisms underlying this delaying behavior, particularly from a patient-caregiver interactive perspective within a Chinese cultural context remain unexplored. This study aimed to explore the dyadic experiences and decision-making mechanisms of care-seeking delay using the Theo
