There is controversy as to whether the emergency department is an inappropriate site for screening for hypertensive patients. The pain and apprehension associated with many ED visits have been thought to elevate blood pressure readings falsely in this setting. A survey was carried out over one year of all the women who attended a colposcopy clinic in a general practice. During the year 1254 women underwent cytological screening in the practice and 197 of these underwent colposcopy.
