MRI-Guided Reduced-Volume Radiation Therapy for Early-Stage Glottic Cancer:A Prospective Phase 1 Trial With Quantification of Laryngeal Motion.

PURPOSE: Five to 7 weeks of whole-larynx radiation therapy (RT) is standard for treatment of early-stage glottic cancer. Previous studies evaluated computed tomography-guided hypofractionated or stereotactic treatment to a smaller volume. Magnetic resonance-guided RT (MRgRT) allows real-time motion tracking and gating by continuously imaging the larynx. We performed the first prospective study of MRgRT in patients with early-stage glottic cancer with quantification of laryngeal motion. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This phase 1 trial evaluated MRgRT in patients with stage I/II squamous cell glottic …

Cervical spine posture, but not head-end motion constraints, governs the kinematic and kinetic response in sub-injurious axial impacts.

Head-first impacts can produce traumatic cervical spine injuries resulting in tetraplegia. These injury patterns are thought to relate to the alignment of the loading vector relative to the spinal column. Pre-impact posture and subsequent head and intervertebral kinematics, including spinal buckling and head motion relative to the spine and torso, can generate complex spinal configurations. These motions often precede injury onset and can be observed with ex vivo models in which applied loads remain below injury thresholds. This study examined the kinematic response of the cervical spine to dy…

Comparison of Various GAN-Based Bone Suppression Imaging for High-Accurate Markerless Motion Tracking of Lung Tumors in CyberKnife Treatment.

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a highly effective treatment for lung cancer; however, challenges arise from tumor motion induced by respiration. The CyberKnife system, incorporating both fiducial-based and fiducial-free tracking modalities, aims to mitigate these challenges, yet tumor recognition can be compromised by overlapping bone structures. This study introduces a novel bone suppression imaging technique for kilovolt X-ray imaging using generative adversarial networks (GANs) to enhance tumor tracking in SBRT by reducing interference from bony structures. Computed tomograph…

Scanner-agnostic dynamic jaw motion generation from virtual static excursive records using open-source Python-based artificial intelligence (AI) interpolation.

This technique describes a scanner-agnostic digital workflow for generating dynamic mandibular motion from static virtual interocclusal records using a custom artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm and user interface. Virtual records of mandibular positions, including maximum intercuspation, protrusion, and lateral excursions, were captured with an intraoral scanner and processed through a custom interface developed using Python, an open-source, script-based programming language. The program interpolates intermediate positions using quantified point tracking and exports a motion path file comp…

New Onset of Systolic Anterior Motion and Severe Mitral Regurgitation after Warm Ischemia in Donation after Circulatory Death Heart Transplantation.

Donation after circulatory death is helping to expand the donor pool for heart transplantation. Nevertheless, these hearts are more susceptible to myocardial edema and decision of accepting the organ can be a challenge for the heart transplant team. Hemodynamic and echocardiographic criteria are used routinely, but there is still a lack of strong evidence that supports the decision-making in particular situations. That is why the authors found useful to analyze a case with a good outcome that could help accepting more organs in a situation of shortage.

Barriers in motion: a multi-methods approach to exploring physical activity, physical function, and program challenges in adult day services.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity (PA) helps older adults age in place and retain independence. Adult Day Centers (ADCs) are critical community-based spaces that provide PA programming, yet the dosage and impact of PA in these settings remains empirically unassessed. METHODS: This study used a multi-methods cross-sectional design to assess PA and physical function among ADC participants, as well as directors' perspectives on PA programming. PA was assessed via an ActivPAL inclinometer, and physical function was assessed via the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and the Timed Up and Go (

Analysis of intra-fractional surface motion during adaptive radiation therapy and relation of internal vs. external position for prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) allows real-time treatment plan adjustment based on daily anatomical changes but involves a time-consuming workflow. Surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) provides precise patient positioning and intra-fractional motion management. This study retrospectively analyses intra-fractional patient motion using SGRT during long-duration radiotherapy (RT) like ART for prostate cancer and further assesses the relation for internal target position measured by cone-beam CT (CBCT) and surface position measured by SGRT. METHODS: Thirty ultra-hypo-fractionated…

Real-time monitoring and appropriate margin selection in linac-based prostate SBRT: Analysis of two different intrafraction motion monitoring systems.

BACKGROUND: Intrafraction motion poses a major challenge in ultrahypofractionated prostate SBRT, where high doses and fewer sessions amplify the impact of positional shifts. Its management varies across centers due to differences in technology, protocols, and resources, and standardized clinical guidelines are still lacking despite widespread recognition of its importance. PURPOSE: To provide insights into real-time monitoring and margin selection by quantifying intrafraction prostate motion using two distinct monitoring systems-system A (electromagnetic transmitter-based) and system B (4D tr…

A fatigue failure framework for the assessment of highly variable low back loading using inertial motion capture - a case study.

Workers in manufacturing settings experience highly variable musculoskeletal loading, which current risk assessment methods often fail to fully capture. This study evaluated a Fatigue Failure-Based framework for estimating continuous lumbar loading from variable occupational loads. Worker movements and postures were recorded using Inertial Motion Capture technologies, and L5/S1 joint loading history was estimated through inverse dynamics. Stress cycles were analysed using Rainflow analysis, adjusted with Goodman's method, and summed using Palmgren-Miner rule to estimate cumulative damage. The …

An 8-Micrometer-Thick Film Strain Sensor with Conformal 3D Microstructure for Accurate Detection of Body Motion and Air Leakage.

Elastomer-based resistive super-thin film strain sensors show great application potentials in electronic skins, human-machine interaction systems, wearable devices for healthcare, and machine learning algorithms. However, it is challenging to accurately monitor the deformation of human body joints and organs with curved surfaces (e.g., knees, throats, finger joints) by only taking advantage of material thickness and elasticity of conventional 2D film strain sensors. Herein, a simple strategy is developed to fabricate conformal elastomeric thin film sensors with periodic 3D microstructure inspi
