White matter fiber integrity and structural brain network topology: implications for balance function in postischemic stroke patients.

Previous studies have suggested that ischemic stroke can result in white matter fiber injury and modifications in the structural brain network. However, the relationship with balance function scores remains insufficiently explored. Therefore, this study aims to explore the alterations in the microstructural properties of brain white matter and the topological characteristics of the structural brain network in postischemic stroke patients and their potential correlations with balance function. We enrolled 21 postischemic stroke patients and 21 age, sex, and education-matched healthy controls (H

Increased nuclear import characterizes aberrant nucleocytoplasmic transport in neurons from patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 7.

INTRODUCTION: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cerebellar and retinal degeneration. SCA7 is caused by a CAG-polyglutamine repeat expansion in the ataxin-7 gene, which encodes a transcription factor protein that is a core component of the STAGA co-activator complex. As ataxin-7 protein regularly shuttles between the nucleus and the cytosol, we sought to test if polyglutamine-expanded ataxin-7 protein results in nuclear membrane abnormalities or defects in nucleocytoplasmic (N/C) transport. METHODS: We used SCA7 266Q knock-in mice

Intermittent energy restriction changes the regional homogeneity of the obese human brain.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent energy restriction (IER) is an effective weight loss strategy. However, the accompanying changes in spontaneous neural activity are unclear, and the relationship among anthropometric measurements, biochemical indicators, and adipokines remains ambiguous. METHODS: Thirty-five obese adults were recruited and received a 2-month IER intervention. Data were collected from anthropometric measurements, blood samples, and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging at four time points. The regional homogeneity (ReHo) method was used to explore the effects of the IER i

Identification of YWHAH as a Novel Brain-Derived Extracellular Vesicle Marker Post Long-Term Midazolam Exposure during Early Development.

Recently, the long-term use of sedative agents in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has raised concerns about neurodevelopmental outcomes in exposed neonates. Midazolam (MDZ), a common neonatal sedative in the NICU, has been suggested to increase learning disturbances and cognitive impairment in children. However, molecular mechanisms contributing to such outcomes with long-term MDZ use during the early stages of life remain unclear. In this study, we for the first time elucidate the role of brain-derived extracellular vesicles (BDEVs), including mining the BDEV proteome post long-term M

Altered brain activity and functional connectivity after MDMA-assisted therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

INTRODUCTION: 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has demonstrated promise in multiple clinical trials. MDMA is hypothesized to facilitate the therapeutic process, in part, by decreasing fear response during fear memory processing while increasing extinction learning. The acute administration of MDMA in healthy controls modifies recruitment of brain regions involved in the hyperactive fear response in PTSD such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and insula. However, to date there have been no neuroimaging studies aimed at directly e

Short-term transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation increases pupil size but does not affect EEG alpha power: A replication of Sharon et al. (2021, Journal of Neuroscience).

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been tested as a potential treatment for pharmaco-resistant epilepsy and depression. Its clinical efficacy is thought to depend on taVNS-induced activation of the locus coeruleus and other neuromodulator systems. However, unlike for invasive VNS in rodents, there is little evidence for an effect of taVNS on noradrenergic activity. OBJECTIVE: We attempted to replicate recently published findings by Sharon et al. (2021), showing that short bursts of taVNS transiently increased pupil size and decreased EEG alpha power, two

Changes in Brain Network Connections After Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Adolescents and Adults.

BACKGROUND: Functional alterations of tripartite neural networks during cognitive control (i.e., frontoparietal network [FPN], cingulo-opercular network, and default mode network) occur in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and may contribute to illness expression. However, the degree to which changes in these networks are elicited by gold standard treatment (e.g., exposure and response prevention [EX/RP]) remains unknown. Understanding how EX/RP modulates network connectivity in adolescent versus adult patients with OCD may aid the identification of developmentally sensitive tr

Language disorders in patients with striatal lesions: Deciphering the role of the striatum in language performance.

The classical neural model of language refers to a cortical network involving frontal, parietal and temporal regions. However, patients with subcortical lesions of the striatum have language difficulties. We investigated whether the striatum is directly involved in language or whether its role in decision-making has an indirect effect on language performance, by testing carriers of Huntington's disease (HD) mutations and controls. HD is a genetic neurodegenerative disease primarily affecting the striatum and causing language disorders. We asked carriers of the HD mutation in the premanifest (b

Interpretable local flow attention for multi-step traffic flow prediction.

Traffic flow prediction (TFP) has attracted increasing attention with the development of smart city. In the past few years, neural network-based methods have shown impressive performance for TFP. However, most of previous studies fail to explicitly and effectively model the relationship between inflows and outflows. Consequently, these methods are usually uninterpretable and inaccurate. In this paper, we propose an interpretable local flow attention (LFA) mechanism for TFP, which yields three advantages. (1) LFA is flow-aware. Different from existing works, which blend inflows and outflows in

[Effect of Objective Daytime Sleepiness on Heart Rate Variability in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea].

OBJECTIVE: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is associated with cardiovascular events in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Our study explored the correlation between objective daytime sleepiness assessed with daytime multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) and heart rate variability (HRV) in OSA patients. The results may provide insight into possible mechanisms underlying increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients with OSA. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted with the data of 139 patients with OSA and 35 patients with primary snoring. All subjects underwent polyso

Can artificial intelligence help decision-making in arthroscopy? Part 2: The IA-RTRHO model - a decision-making aid for long head of the biceps diagnoses in small rotator cuff tears.

INTRODUCTION: The possible applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in orthopedic surgery are promising. Deep learning can be utilized in arthroscopic surgery due to the video signal used by computer vision. The intraoperative management of the long head of biceps (LHB) tendon is the subject of a long-standing controversy. The main objective of this study was to model a diagnostic AI capable of determining the healthy or pathological state of the LHB on arthroscopic images. The secondary objective was to create a second diagnostic AI model based on arthroscopic images and the medical, clin
