Body Image Disorders and Surgical Timing in Patients Affected by Poland Syndrome: Data Analysis of 58 Case Studies.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a congenital anomaly of pectoralis muscles, breast, chest, and upper arm. Several studies have reported that patients affected by chest wall deformities often experience body image disorders and decreased quality of life. Cosmetic corrective surgery is generally postponed until physical development is achieved, and latissimus dorsi flap surgery is usually suggested. This study aims to propose a new surgical timing for these patients. METHODS: Patients affected by Poland syndrome (n = 58) and control patients (n = 50) were included in the study, and their body-re

The differential effects of Autism and Down's syndrome on sexual behavior.

Although sexuality plays a major role in the socialization of people, few studies have examined the sexual behaviors of individuals with developmental disabilities. Because of this, we decided to investigate sexuality in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Down's syndrome (Ds) and to compare them with typically developing adolescents, by surveying their parents. Specifically, it was hypothesized that young people with ASD would display lower levels over five domains: social behavior, privacy, sex education, sexual behavior, and parental concerns, than peers with Ds and typicall

Mexican American women's perspectives on a culturally adapted cognitive-behavioral therapy guided self-help program for binge eating.

The prevalence of bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) among Latinas is comparable to those of the general population; however, few interventions and treatment trial research have focused on this group. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice for binge eating related disorders. CBT-based guided self-help (CBTgsh)-a low-cost minimal intervention-has also been shown effective in improving binge eating related symptom, but the effectiveness of the CBTgsh among ethnic minority women is not well understood. Cultural adaptation of evidence-based treatments can b

Latent profile analysis of neuropsychological measures to determine preschoolers' risk for ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Hyperactive/Inattentive preschool children show clear evidence of neuropsychological dysfunction. We examined whether patterns and severity of test scores could reliably identify subgroups of preschoolers with differential risk for ADHD during school-age. METHOD: Typically developing (TD: n = 76) and Hyperactive/Inattentive (HI: n = 138) 3-4 year olds were assessed annually for 6 years (T1-T6). Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to form subgroups among the HI group based on objective/neuropsychological measures (NEPSY, Actigraph and Continuous Performance Test). Logistic regre

Obesity trends of 8-18 year old Special Olympians: 2005-2010.

Obesity is a worldwide health problem. Individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) experience health disparities, including higher rates of obesity than their peers with typical development; however, there has been no tracking of the obesity rates of children and youth with ID over time. The objective of this study was to compare the BMI of children and youth (8-<19 years of age) with and without ID in the USA, measured overtime; and determine differences between the two groups. This study is a secondary analysis of BMI derived from the Special Olympics International (SOI) Healthy Athletes

Academic self-concept in children with epilepsy and its relation to their quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: Academic achievement in children with epilepsy is a highly studied topic with many important implications. However, only little attention has been devoted to academic self-concept of such children and the relation of academic self-concept to their quality of life. We aimed to examine academic self-concept in children with epilepsy, to assess its relationship to academic achievement and to determine possible correlations between academic self-concept and quality of life. METHODS: The study group consisted of 182 children and adolescents aged 9-14 years who completed the student's p

Motor impairment factors related to brain injury timing in early hemiparesis. Part I: expression of upper-extremity weakness.

BACKGROUND: Extensive neuromotor development occurs early in human life, but the time that a brain injury occurs during development has not been rigorously studied when quantifying motor impairments. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the impact of timing of brain injury on the magnitude and distribution of weakness in the paretic arm of individuals with childhood-onset hemiparesis. METHODS: A total of 24 individuals with hemiparesis were divided into time periods of injury before birth (PRE-natal, n = 8), around the time of birth (PERI-natal, n = 8), or after 6 months of age (POST-natal, n

Early consonant production in Swedish infants with and without unilateral cleft lip and palate and two-stage palatal repair.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate consonant production at 12 and 18 months of age following early soft palate repair in infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), and to compare it with typically developing children without clefts. DESIGN: Randomized study with comparison group. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty Swedish infants born with UCLP and 21 without clefts (COMP) were included in a randomized trial of palatal surgery (Scandcleft project). Soft palate closure was completed at age 5 months; hard palate closure was performed in 11 of the infants with UCLP at 1 year of age (HPC) and was left open i

[Suicidal adolescents--what should clinicians look for?].

BACKGROUND: Over the past decades, suicidal behaviour has increased among adolescents. We wanted to explore what characterises adolescents who come in to see a general practitioner prior to a suicide attempt. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 87 % of a group of adolescents below the age of 20 (N = 92) who were admitted to hospital after attempted suicide were interviewed and compared to a non-suicidal control group. RESULTS: 41 out of the 92 saw a doctor within six weeks prior to the attempt; 27 presented with purely physical problems, 6 with psychological problems and eight with a combination of both. O

Severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia increases risk for later neurological and motor sequelae in preterm survivors.

Preterm children who develop severe chronic lung disease may be developmentally compromised by exposure to hypoxic episodes. This study aims to determine if children with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) who required home oxygen therapy were at greater risk for neurological and motor deficits at school age than preterm peers without BPD. This study evaluated 27 subjects with BPD and 27 preterm control infants matched for gestational age, birthweight, sex, and year of birth at a mean age of 9.9 years (2.0 SD) using standardized neuromotor outcome measures. Pair-matched comparisons and re

What Hispanic parents do to encourage and discourage 3-5 year old children to be active: a qualitative study using nominal group technique.

PURPOSE: Hispanic preschoolers are less active than their non-Hispanic peers. As part of a feasibility study to assess environmental and parenting influences on preschooler physical activity (PA) (Niños Activos), the aim of this study was to identify what parents do to encourage or discourage PA among Hispanic 3-5 year old children to inform the development of a new PA parenting practice instrument and future interventions to increase PA among Hispanic youth. METHODS: Nominal Group Technique (NGT), a structured multi-step group procedure, was used to elicit and prioritize responses from 10 gr

[How residents develop virtues: A qualitative longitudinal study].

INTRODUCTION: Medical specialists in training not only develop competencies, but also virtues (positive personal qualities). Literature generally assumes that people develop virtues and character, yet, how this process takes place during postgraduate medical education has hardly been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To provide an empirically informed account of virtue development during medical specialty training. METHOD: A qualitative, longitudinal study of fifteen otolaryngology residents and thirteen educators. Residents were interviewed twice with in between participant observations, followed by

Associations between structural stigma and earlier pubertal timing persist for 1 year among Black girls and Latinx youth.

Black and Latinx youth experience earlier pubertal timing relative to their non-stigmatized peers. Research on determinants of this increased risk has largely focused on aspects of individuals (e.g., body mass index) or their proximal environment (e.g., socioeconomic status), to the exclusion of broader macro-social factors. Using 2 years of Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study® data, we examined whether structural stigma (e.g., state-level policies, aggregated prejudicial attitudes) was associated with hormonal and physical markers of pubertal development. Baseline results documented

Early Perception of Intonation in Down Syndrome: Implications for Language Intervention.

Language difficulties have been highlighted as a cornerstone of the developmental profile in Down Syndrome (DS), but very few studies have examined early language abilities in children with DS to determine the initial strengths and weaknesses that might inform early language interventions to support language development in this population. This study focused on the early perception of intonation and examined whether it differed between infants with DS and typically developing (TD) peers. Using a visual habituation paradigm from a previous study on TD infants' ability to perceive the intonation

Impaired audio-visual associations in dyslexia: evidence beyond linguistic processing.

Audio-visual (AV) associations are central to many aspects of behavior, including the initial steps of learning to read. The acquisition of AV pairings has been explored in individuals with varying literacy skills, including children with developmental dyslexia. Most previous studies examined performance in AV associative tasks looking at the pairings between linguistic auditory material and visual stimuli, thus confounding AV learning with phonological and/or verbal abilities. In the present study, we introduce an AV learning paradigm relying on non-linguistic auditory stimuli and novel visua
