We compared the performance of 2 multiplex assays (Focus Simplexa and Quidel Lyra) to individual real-time PCR for the detection of herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and Varicella zoster virus (VZV) from clinical specimens. Results were compared to a consensus standard, defined as the result obtained by at least 2 of the 3 molecular methods. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is responsible for sporadic acute hepatitis in developed countries, where the infection is acquired probably through ingestion of contaminated food, in addition to travel-related cases. PURPOSE: New markers that enable the percentage of transitional cell carcinomas (TCC) of the bladder that are diagnosed before invasion of the bladder muscle layers to be increased would reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with this disease. The purpose of this study was to develop a simple, accurate urine test based on mRNA markers and simple gene signatures that (a) could detect TCC before muscle invasion while maintaining high specificity in patients with hematuria or urinary tract infections and (b) identify patients most likely to have grade 3 or stage > or =T1 disease.
