Cartilage damage and bone erosion are more prominent determinants of functional impairment in longstanding experimental arthritis than synovial inflammation.

Chronic inflammation of articular joints causing bone and cartilage destruction consequently leads to functional impairment or loss of mobility in affected joints from individuals affected by rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Even successful treatment with complete resolution of synovial inflammatory processes does not lead to full reversal of joint functionality, pointing to the crucial contribution of irreversibly damaged structural components, such as bone and cartilage, to restricted joint mobility. In this context, we investigated the impact of the distinct components, including synovial inflamm

Pre-counseling education materials for BRCA testing: does tailoring make a difference?

Although tailored print materials (TPMs) have been assessed for a variety of behavioral targets, their effectiveness as decision aids for genetic testing had not been evaluated at the time this study began. We compared TPMs and non-tailored print material (NPMs) that included similar content about genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility. TPMs were prepared especially for an individual based on information from and about her. We mailed baseline surveys to 461 women referred by physicians or identified through a tumor registry. All had personal and family histories of breast

Protocol for high-throughput droplet-engineered TIL-retaining tumor organoids in triple-negative breast cancer.

Here, we present a protocol for generating high-throughput, droplet-engineered tumor organoids from triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) tissues using the OrgFab® micro-sphere printing system. We describe tumor dissociation, bioink preparation, and automated organoid fabrication. We further detail rho-associated coiled-coil kinase (ROCK) pathway modulation to preserve tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and enhance T cell function, as well as flow cytometry-based immune characterization (Figure 1). This protocol enables scalable production of immune-competent tumor organoids for immunologica…

The need for adjusting the script; characteristics and future directions of deployable healthcare facilities for climate-change-induced disasters.

Climate change increasingly disrupts public health through frequent, severe disasters, rendering traditional deployable hospitals inadequate for unpredictable climate demands. This paper examines the unique requirements for healthcare infrastructure in extreme environments and proposes a shift toward advanced technological solutions, including air-inflated structures, smart materials, 3D printing, and autonomous robotics. We advocate for modular, sustainable, and age-friendly designs that integrate mental health and community services and remain in the field beyond the acute disaster phase, to…

The use of computer-aided design and 3-dimensional models in the treatment of forearm malunions in children.

Computer-aided design has several orthopedic applications. In this article we propose the use of computer-aided design to address the problem of forearm malunions in children. Traditional methods of planning forearm osteotomies utilize 2-dimensional radiographs, however, this is not a reliable method to address rotational deformities. Our method involves collaboration with clinical engineers at Materialise (Leuven, Belgium) to produce patient-specific cutting jigs using preoperative computed tomographic scans and 3-dimensional printing technology. This method allows for precise planning of com…

Structure-Barrier-Release Relationships of Low-Temperature ALD ZrO2 Thin Films on Co-Cr Alloys: Reducing Long-Term Co and Cr Ion Release in Artificial Saliva.

Co-Cr alloys are widely used in biomedical devices owing to their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance; however, sustained metal-ion release in physiological environments remains an important materials concern. Low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) enables the formation of conformal ceramic barriers that can restrict long-term metal-ion transport. In this study, nominally ~50 nm ALD-derived ZrO2 coatings were deposited on Co-Cr substrates manufactured by investment casting (CAST), CAD/CAM milling (MILLED), and laser powder bed fusion (PRINTED). The coatings were cha
