Unraveling the quality-of-life network: how activities of daily living are embedded in the multidimensional quality of life after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Quality of Life (QoL) after stroke is a multidimensional construct, yet its internal interactive architecture and how objective functional capacity, specifically Activities of Daily Living (ADL), embeds within this subjective network remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to delineate the interdependent network structure of post-stroke quality of life domains and to investigate the specific role of ADL within this system. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a sample of 451 stroke survivors was recruited. Psychometric network analysis was conducted on the 12 dom

Mechanisms of action in a physical activity counseling intervention for adults awaiting metabolic and bariatric surgery: A single-case experimental feasibility trial.

Research into theory-based interventions for promoting physical activity (PA) has progressed; however, evaluating mechanisms of action remains essential to ensure implementation fidelity, assess whether the intervention alters targeted constructs, identify what drives behavior change, diagnose intervention failure, optimize future interventions, and assess causal pathways posited by theory. Although theory-based interventions allow researchers to map out how their intervention will drive behavior change, empirical testing is required to support or refute the proposed mechanisms of action. Nursing staff competence assessment instruments: a scoping review with implications for long-term care.

AIM: Competence assessment is essential for professional growth, workforce planning, and quality improvement in long-term care (LTC). However, the wide range of instruments, their limited differentiation based on various qualification levels, and the lack of standardized frameworks hinder effective use. This scoping review aimed to map international evidence on competence assessment instruments used in residential LTC nursing, broadening the scope to include acute care, community-based, and mixed-care settings to enhance the relevance and transferability of findings. METHODS: A scoping review

Procedural Confidence Among Graduating Emergency Medicine Residents: Implications for Training and Assessment of Clinical Readiness.

BACKGROUND: The current numerical standards for procedural competency in Emergency Medicine (EM) lack strong evidentiary support. In the absence of more validated competency standards, self-reported confidence has been used as a learner-centered measure of perceived procedural readiness. Characterizing procedural confidence, patterns across procedures, and factors associated with confidence may help inform improvements in residency curricula and assessment. OBJECTIVE: To characterize self-reported confidence in key emergency medicine procedures, identify patterns across procedures, and examin

Functional disability and multidimensional hardship among cancer survivors in the USA: a nationally representative study.

PURPOSE: Functional disability is common among cancer survivors, yet its contribution to multidimensional survivorship burden remains incompletely characterized. We evaluated disability-specific and sex-stratified associations with survivorship burden in a nationally representative US cohort. METHODS: We analyzed 2017-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data among adult cancer survivors. Functional disability included mobility, cognitive, or self-care limitation. Outcomes included socioeconomic hardship (ordinal composite of inability to work and cost-related unmet care), psycholo

Central pain sensitivity is associated with changes in fatigue in RA: data from the CAP-RA study.

OBJECTIVES: This observational study examined whether central pain sensitivity is associated with fatigue in RA and whether such associations are explained by pain severity or inflammation. METHODS: Participants with RA provided self-report fatigue (Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue Multidimensional Questionnaire-BRAF-MDQ), pain severity (summated numerical rating scales) and self-reported pain sensitivity (central aspects of pain-CAP) data at baseline (n = 194) and 3 months (n = 114) while under usual care. CAP was modified (M-CAP) by removing the fatigue-associated item. Pain sensitivity

Defective B cell tolerance in SLE lymph nodes underpins VH4-34 "clonal damnation" and PD-1+TOX+ autoreactive B cells expansion.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease driven by uncensored B and T cell autoreactivity. Understanding this pathogenic process has been hampered by lack of studies of secondary lymphoid organs in human SLE. Using minimally invasive lymph node fine needle aspirates (LN-FNAs), we profiled tissue-resident immune cells from 59 SLE patients and 34 healthy controls through high-dimensional 43-color flow cytometry, antigen-specific tetramer probing, and sc-RNA sequencing with paired VH/VL repertoire analysis. Our findings reveal hyperactive lymph node immunity in SLE chara

Health-related quality of life in Chinese children with immune thrombocytopaenia: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: This multicentre, prospective study systematically evaluated health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Chinese children with newly diagnosed immune thrombocytopaenia (ITP) using the disease-specific Kids' ITP Tools (KITs) scale. The study addresses a critical gap in longitudinal HRQoL data, particularly within South and East Asian paediatric populations. METHODS: A total of 88 child self-reports, 215 parent proxy-reports and 303 parent-completed HRQoL assessments were collected from nine tertiary hospitals (2023 and 2025). HRQoL was measured using validated KITs scales (child self

Prescription and self-reported use of endocrine therapy among Black hormone receptor-positive breast cancer survivors in the Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors cohort.

PURPOSE: Black women with hormone receptor-positive (HR +) breast cancer are twice as likely as White women to have weakly HR + tumors (1-10% positive cells). Patients with weakly HR + tumors are less frequently prescribed ET and have 60% higher mortality than strongly HR + tumors (> 10% positive cells). We evaluated factors associated with ET prescription and self-reported use among Black women with HR + breast cancer. METHODS: Among 922 Detroit ROCS participants, we evaluated associations between demographics, socioeconomic status, and health, tumor, oncologist, and hospital characteristics

The Types of Psychosocial Factors Associated with Suicidality Outcomes for People Living with Bipolar Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Bipolar Disorder is associated with high rates of suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and outcomes, yet the lived experience of suicidality and Bipolar Disorder is not particularly well understood. Understanding the role of psychosocial aetiologies in suicidality outcomes for those living with Bipolar Disorder is key for developing appropriately targeted interventions focusing on factors that are amenable to change. In line with PRISMA guidance, we conducted a scoping review to identify the types of psychosocial factors studied in relation to the experience of suicidality for people living with Bipo

HIV risk behaviour, viraemia, and transmission across HIV cascade stages including low-level viremia: Analysis of 14 cross-sectional population-based HIV Impact Assessment surveys in sub-Saharan Africa.

As antiretroviral treatment (ART) coverage for people living with HIV (PLHIV) increases, HIV programmes require up-to-date information about evolving HIV risk behaviour and transmission risk, including those with low-level viremia (LLV; >50 to ≤1000 copies/mL), to guide prevention priorities. We aimed to assess differences in sexual risk behaviours, distribution of viral load (VL) and proportion of transmission across PLHIV subgroups. We analysed data from Population-based HIV Impact Assessment surveys in 14 sub-Saharan African countries during 2015-2019. We estimated adjusted prevalence ratio

UV arrows descend from above: lessons from a mass media campaign to improve sun protection behaviours among young adults.

OBJECTIVE: More than 95% of melanomas in Australia are caused by UV radiation from the sun. Young adults are particularly at risk, with 18-24-year-olds spending more time in the sun and protecting their skin less than older adults. A new mass media campaign was delivered in New South Wales, Australia, to motivate this hard-to-reach group to protect their skin from harmful UV radiation. This paper shares learnings from this campaign for public health educators working across diverse fields. PROGRAM: Guided by audience research and testing, the campaign combined fear-based and self-efficacy mes
