Positive psychosocial factors and the development of symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress symptoms following acute myocardial infarction.

INTRODUCTION: Acute myocardial infarction (MI) is a potentially fatal condition, leading to high psychological distress and possibly resulting in the development of depressive symptoms and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The aim of this study was to investigate the association of clusters of positive psychosocial factors (resilience, task-oriented coping, positive affect and social support) with both MI-induced depressive symptoms and PTSS, independent of demographic factors. METHODS: We investigated 154 consecutive patients with MI, 3 and 12 months after hospital discharge. All patient…

'I'm just a walking eating disorder': the mobilisation and construction of a collective illness identity in eating disorder support groups.

The increasing visibility of support groups has prompted a flurry of sociological investigation, much of which explores how groups benefit participants. What researchers have failed to consider is the group itself. Bringing social movement theory to bear on the case of eating disorder support groups, this study seeks to explore how support groups attract and sustain adequate participation. Participant observation in an eating disorder support group reveals that broad diagnostic and prognostic frames, coupled with strong motivational framing and collective identification on the basis of a share

Understanding the costs of support transactions in daily life.

The benefits of close relationships for mental and physical health are well documented. One of the mechanisms presumed to underlie these effects is social support, whereby close others provide practical and emotional assistance in times of need. Although there is no doubt that generalized perceptions of support availability are beneficial, research examining actual instances of support receipt has found unexpectedly mixed results. Receiving support sometimes has positive effects, but null or even negative effects are common. In this article, we review our multimethod program of research that s…

Translation and validation of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory in perinatal health.

This article describes the process used for translation, testing for reliability and validity, and establishing factor structure of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory (SBI-Fr). The objective was to provide an adequate self-report measure of satisfaction with social support during the perinatal period for use with a Francophone population in Québec, Canada. When compared with the English version, the French version had similar qualities regarding reliability and validity, but principal component analysis (N = 271) revealed that the SBI-Fr measures two distinct subscales, pe…

Disrupting the Climate Distress Cascade: Testing Community-Grounded Theories of Change Using Secondary Data From a Cross-Sectional Canadian Study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly recognized as a source of significant psychological distress. How can we best minimize its mental health impacts? This study examines community-grounded theories of change by modelling how cognitive, emotional, and social processes shape climate-related psychological distress and adaptation. Work-family conflict and neck and back pain in surgical nurses.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical nurses' work is physically and mentally demanding, possibly leading to work-family conflict (WFC). The current study tests WFC to be a risk factor for neck and lower back pain (LBP). Job influence and social support are tested as resources that could buffer the detrimental impact of WFC. METHODS: Forty-eight surgical nurses from two university hospitals in Germany and Switzerland were recruited. WFC was assessed with the Work-Family Conflict Scale. Job influence and social support were assessed with the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, and back pain was assessed with…

"A rough and swirling sea": Voicing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis through discourse analysis.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rare, incurable neurodegenerative disease that leads to death within 5 years of diagnosis and greatly impacts patients' and caregivers' quality of life (QoL).
