Combat injury and limb amputation moderate the association between mental health and sympathetic activity.

BACKGROUND: Combat-related traumatic injury (CRTI) can increase sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, with poor mental health possibly worsening this effect. Increased SNS activity is associated with CVD risk. We examined the ADVANCE cohort to assess whether the effect of mental health on sympathetic activity differs in injured servicemen with and without associated limb loss and a frequency-matched uninjured group. METHODS: The primary outcome was the SNS index (SNSi) measured via a single-lead 5-min electrocardiogram recording and analysed in Kubios software. The exposure variables wer…

Effects of morning versus evening high-intensity exercise on electroencephalographic and autonomic responses in middle-aged women.

PURPOSE: The time of day at which exercise is performed influences physiological responses and performance, and thus its health benefits. This study investigated whether electroencephalographic (EEG) and autonomic nervous system responses to morning versus evening exercise differed in middle-aged women. METHODS: Thirty women aged 50-60 years were randomly assigned to a morning or evening exercise group. Participants were asked to sleep for seven to eight hours before testing. The morning group exercised at 6:00 am and the evening group at 6:00 pm. EEG-derived indices included the theta-to-bet

Renal denervation revisited: is patient selection the missing link between failure and success?

Renal denervation (RDN) has re-emerged as a therapeutic option for hypertension following contemporary sham-controlled randomized trials dem … lications. We evaluated the influence of hypertension phenotype, baseline BP, medication adherence, sympathetic nervous system activity, renal artery anatomy, and comorbid conditions on BP response to RDN. Accumulating data indicate that response to RDN is highly variable and strongly influenced by patient-specific characteristics. Sustained hypertension confirmed by ambula …

Acute Caffeine Administered in Chewing Gum May Improve Functional Firefighting Balance After Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Supplementation: A Double-Blind Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether caffeinated chewing gum enhances sympathetic activity and improves functional firefighting balan … ance performance with a small effect size after GABA supplementation. The increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system may be one of the reasons for improved functional firefighting balance performance.

Thoracic autonomic nervous system surgery current application-a survey among members of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic autonomic nervous system surgery is mainly used for hyperhidrosis/facial flushing, whereas cardiac and vascular indications are limited. The literature remains controversial regarding the correct indications and surgical technique, with the lack of homogeneous data being a major limitation. We designed a survey to investigate current practice among members of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS). METHODS: A 29-question ad hoc questionnaire was available to all ESTS members from December 2022 to February 2023. It included questions on demographics, indications,

Acupuncture modulation of the ACE/Ang II/AT1R and ACE2/Ang(1-7)/MasR pathways in the rostral ventrolateral medulla reduces sympathetic output and prevents cardiac injury caused by SHR hypertension.

Acupuncture can reduce blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and ameliorate cardiac damage by modulating the excitability of the sympathetic nervous system, but the exact mechanism of this effect remains unclear. This study investigated the potential mechanisms of acupuncture in the treatment of cardiac damage in hypertension. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were used as the hypertension model with Wistar-Kyoto rats as the control. Manual acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and metoprolol were used as interventions. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) plus HR were monitored with car…

Electroacupuncture Ameliorates Gastric Hypersensitivity via Adrenergic Pathway in a Rat Model of Functional Dyspepsia.

OBJECTIVE: Electroacupuncture (EA) is effective in treating visceral pain associated with functional dyspepsia (FD). The aim of this study was to explore the effect of chronic EA (CEA) on gastric hypersensitivity and the involvement of sympathetic nervous system in a rodent model of FD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gastric hypersensitivity in adulthood was induced by iodoacetamide (IA) in neonatal rats. The IA-treated rats were randomized to receive no treatment (control), sham-CEA, CEA, or adrenergic antagonists, for one week. Gastric sensitivity to graded gastric distensions was then assessed by …

Autonomic dysfunction in hereditary spastic paraplegia type 4.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: SPAST mutations are the most common cause of hereditary spastic paraplegia (SPG4-HSP), which is characterized by progressive lower limb weakness, spasticity and hyperreflexia. There are few studies about non-motor manifestations in this disease and none about autonomic involvement. Therefore, the aim was to determine the frequency and pattern of autonomic complaints in patients with SPG4-HSP, as well as to determine the clinical relevance and the possible factors associated with these manifestations. METHODS: Thirty-four molecularly confirmed SPG4 patients were recruit

Toward Closed-Loop Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation using Peripheral Cardiovascular Physiological Biomarkers: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (t-VNS) is a promising technology for modulating brain function and possibly treating disorders of the central nervous system. While handheld devices are available for t-VNS, stimulation efficacy can only be quantified using expensive imaging or blood biomarker analyses. Additionally, the parameters and "dosage" recommendations for t-VNS are typically fixed, as there are limited biomarkers that can assess downstream effects of the stimulation outside of clinical settings. In this proof-of-concept study, we evaluated non-invasive peripheral cardiovascular

Anti-inflammatory properties of the vagus nerve: potential therapeutic implications of vagus nerve stimulation.

Brain and viscera interplay within the autonomic nervous system where the vagus nerve (VN), containing approximately 80% afferent and 20% efferent fibres, plays multiple key roles in the homeostatic regulations of visceral functions. Recent data have suggested the anti-inflammatory role of the VN. This vagal function is mediated through several pathways, some of them still debated. The first one is the anti-inflammatory hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis which is stimulated by vagal afferent fibres and leads to the release of cortisol by the adrenal glands. The second one, called the choliner

Sympathetic Nerve Activity Maintains an Anti-Inflammatory State in Adipose Tissue in Male Mice by Inhibiting TNF-α Gene Expression in Macrophages.

Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) play an important role in the inflammatory response in obese animals. How ATMs are regulated in lean animals has remained elusive, however. We now show that the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is necessary to maintain the abundance of the mRNA for the proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α at a low level in ATMs of lean mice. Intracerebroventricular injection of agouti-related neuropeptide increased the amount of TNF-α mRNA in epididymal (epi) white adipose tissue (WAT), but not in interscapular brown adipose tissue (BAT), through inhibition of sympathetic nerve acti…

Sympathetic vasomotor tone is associated with depressive symptoms in young females: a potential link between depression and cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Although increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity is commonly associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), a biomarker linking these two entities remains elusive. We therefore evaluated the relationship between depressive symptoms and cardiovascular modulation by heart rate variability (HRV), brachial blood pressure (BP), ambulatory BP (ABP), and low frequency component of systolic BP variability (LFSBP), a surrogate of sympathetic vasomotor tone. We hypothesized that LFSBP would be the strongest predictor of depressive symptoms compa…

The 5-HTTLPR genotype modulates heart rate variability and its adjustment by pharmacological panic challenge in healthy men.

Abnormal serotonin transporter (5-HTT) function and autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation has been proposed in panic disorder. However, in contrast to hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) functioning, ANS reactivity during panic response has yet not been investigated in humans with respect to the 5-HTT genotype. The present study assessed the influence of challenging by cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK-4) on heart rate variability (HRV) measures, to monitor autonomic reactivity and its relationship to 5-HTT-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) genotypes. We hypothesized substanti

Psychophysiological responses to pain identify reproducible human clusters.

Pain is a ubiquitous yet highly variable experience. The psychophysiological and genetic factors responsible for this variability remain unresolved. We hypothesised the existence of distinct human pain clusters (PCs) composed of distinct psychophysiological and genetic profiles coupled with differences in the perception and the brain processing of pain. We studied 120 healthy subjects in whom the baseline personality and anxiety traits and the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) genotype were measured. Real-time autonomic nervous system parameters and serum cortisol were

Characterization of sheep (Ovis aries) palatine tonsil innervation.

Palatine tonsils (PTs), together with ileal Peyer's patches, rank among the first colonization sites for infectious prions. After replicating in these lymphoid tissues, prions undertake the process of "neuroinvasion," which is likely mediated by the peripheral nerves connecting lymphoid tissues to the central nervous system (CNS). To study the connections between the tonsils and the CNS, we injected fluorescent tracers into the PTs of lambs; the highest number of Fast Blue (FB)-labeled neurons was found in cranial cervical ganglia (CCG), whereas a progressively decreasing number of cells were

Improvement of cardiac diastolic function by long-term centrally mediated sympathetic inhibition in one-kidney, one-clip hypertensive rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and diastolic dysfunction. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is strongly implicated in these alterations. The possible beneficial effect of a centrally mediated sympathetic inhibition on the diastolic function in severe hypertension has never been studied. We have evaluated the cardiac effects (remodeling, diastolic and systolic functions) of a long-term treatment with a centrally acting drug, rilmenidine, in a model of severe renovascular hypertension. METHODS: One-kidney, one-clip (1K,1C) Goldblatt hypertensiv…
