Clinical effect of etidronate on alveolar pyorrhoea associated with chronic marginal periodontitis: report of four cases.

Etidronate 200 mg daily was administered to four female patients with periodontitis and resultant alveolar pyorrhoea for periods of 2 weeks, followed by off-periods of 10 weeks or more, for 2-3 years. The macroscopic appearance of gingival mobility of the teeth, depth of periodontal pockets, and X-ray findings of alveolar bones improved markedly during this time. The effects were first observed after 6-12 months of treatment. These findings indicate that bisphosphonates may be effective in the treatment of periodontitis and resultant alveolar pyorrhoea. The effect may be mediated by the inhibi

Effect of saliva substitutes on mineral content of demineralized and sound dental enamel.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of commercially available saliva substitutes on the mineral content of pre-demineralized and sound enamel. From 56 bovine incisors 224 enamel specimens were prepared and hand-polished. The specimens were partially covered with nail varnish (control of sound enamel). In group 1, 112 samples were demineralized (18 days; 37 degrees C; pH 5.0) and a portion of the demineralized area was likewise covered with nail varnish. Subsequently, 16 specimens were exposed (14 days; 37 degrees C) to 10 ml of each of several different saliva substitute

Inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia caused by endodontic pathosis: a case report and review of the literature.

Sensory disturbances such as anesthesia, hypoesthesia, hyperesthesia, and paresthesia may be present in the oral cavity, stemming from many local and systemic factors. Paresthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve is quite rare because of the unique anatomy of this nerve. Among other effects, periapical lesions can damage the nerve, resulting in paresthesia of its innervated area. Only a few cases of paresthesia caused by these lesions are reported in the literature. In this report we present a case of paresthesia of the right inferior alveolar nerve; discuss the anatomy, pathobiology, and etiolo

Using fenestration technique to treat a large dentigerous cyst.

Dentigerous cysts are commonly encountered in the practice of dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Treatment modalities range from enucleation to marsupialization, and are based on the premise that the pathological process can be controlled locally with minimal injury to the adjacent host structures. In a child, however, loss of permanent tooth buds in the management of a large dentigerous cyst can be devastating. This article describes the technique of fenestration, which removes this entity and preserves the developing dentition.

Diagnosis of X-linked hypophosphatemic vitamin D resistant rickets.

Recent advances in the pathophysiology and diagnosis of X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH) are reviewed. The recent discovery of the gene that is responsible for XLH especially enables us to understand the mechanism of hypophosphatemia in XLH. Laboratory and radiological findings are important for the diagnosis. However, dental abnormalities such as spontaneous dental abscess and a defect of dentin maturation are also notable findings.

[Immunohistochemical localization of the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan in demineralized rat periodontal tissue].

We investigated the immunohistochemical localization of the chondroitin sulfates (chondroitin-4 sulfate, -6 sulfate and dermatan sulfate) in demineralized rat periodontal tissue using monoclonal antibodies (2-B-6, 3-B-3). Also, fixative and demineralized methods were established using these monoclonal antibodies. The result showed that the most effective combination of fixative and demineralized methods was 2% glutaraldehyde 1% para-formaldehyde and 5% EDTA. Chondroitin-4 sulfate and dermatan sulfate were widespread in gingival connective tissue and periodontal membrane, with an especially str

Odontogenic cervical necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft-tissue infection characterized by diffuse necrosis of fascia and subcutaneous tissue; initially, skin and muscle are usually spared. The trunk, abdomen, perineum, and extremities are the most commonly involved areas. The case of a 55-year-old man with a cervical necrotizing fasciitis from an infected tooth is presented. The medical history, etiology, anatomy, precipitating factors, clinical presentation, and therapy of this infection are discussed. Early recognition allows effective therapy with aggressive surgical intervention, broad-spectrum antibiotics

Dental aspects of anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are both psychosocial pathological eating disorders. An intense preoccupation with food, weight and a distorted body image coupled with a morbid fear of becoming obese are common elements in both syndromes. Self-starvation with extreme weight loss is associated with anorexia nervosa. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by unrestrained eating sprees followed by purging, fasting or vomiting. Approximately 50% of anorexia nervosa patients also practice bulimia. The impact of eating disorders on the oral soft and hard tissues depends upon the diet as well as the d

[The correlation between dental pathology and ophthalmic pathology].

The study aims to assess the correlation between dental pathologies and ophthalmic diseases. Based on a statistical evaluation, the study examines the presence of dental diseases in patients suffering from optic neuritis or uveitis in comparison to a control group of subjects. The possible interactions between the two ophthalmic pathologies and dental diseases are then analyzed in order to highlight possible clinical signs which may be useful for their identification.

Changes of the marginal periodontium as a result of labial tooth movement in monkeys.

Tooth position has been suggested to be an important factor in gingival recession. Due to conflicting reports in the literature, this study was undertaken to examine the effects of labial tooth movement on changes in the marginal periodontium. Orthodontic tooth movement was performed in five monkeys (Macaca nemistrina). Oral health was established and exploratory surgery was performed to assess the level of the connective tissue attachment and marginal bone. Measurements of the gingival margin and mucogingival junction were taken and orthodontic forces were applied. The central incisors were m
