Clostridioides (C.) difficile is a major healthcare-associated pathogen inducing infectious diarrhea. Approximately 25-33% of patients with antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and 90% of patients with pseudomembranous enteritis are caused by C. difficile infection (CDI). Stool samples were collected from hospitalized adults with presumptive AAD in four nonneonatal intensive care units (ICUs). Diagnosis of CDI was based on both clinical symptoms and laboratory results. The stool specimens were transferred onto CDIF (C. difficile agar), and C. difficile was finally confirmed by the latex agglut

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a neglected re-emerging and occupational zoonotic disease worldwide. In Africa, contact with livestock is postulated as a potential source of environmental contamination and a source of human Leptospira exposure, though pathways remain unknown. Recently, we confirmed Leptospira exposure and shedding among slaughtered cattle in Western Bahr El Ghazal. In the current study, we sought to determine corresponding occupational leptospiral seropositivity, associated risk factors and the prevalence of febrile illness among slaughterhouse workers.
METHODS: Between 27th Feb

Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is like other systemic autoimmune diseases, characterized by a large number of autoantigens and autoantibodies and infiltration of glandular tissue by predominantly CD4 T lymphocytes. The presence of certain autoantibodies is required for the diagnosis to be made, especially Anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of anti-alpha fodrin and its association with anti-Ro and anti-La in juvenile and adult SS. Thirteen cases with juvenile SS and 11 old SS patients were examined. Selection and classification of the patients was based

Placental examination can be a useful tool for specifying the etiology, prognosis, and recurrence risk of pregnancy disorders. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability of a predetermined set of placental reaction patterns seen with maternal vascular underperfusion in the hope that this might provide a useful diagnostic framework for practicing pathologists. Study cases (14 with clinical and pathologic evidence of maternal underperfusion plus 6 controls) were evaluated for the presence or absence of 11 lesions by eight perinatal pathologists. After analysis of initial results, diag

Rectal contents and tonsils from Dutch slaughter pigs collected immediately after slaughter were examined for the presence of verocytotoxin (VT)-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) of serogroup O157 (O157 VTEC). In addition, fresh fecal material from poultry layer flocks and turkey flocks collected on poultry farms was examined for the presence of O157 VTEC. E. coli O157 strains were isolated from two (1.4%) of 145 pigs. The strains were isolated from samples of rectal contents, all samples of tonsils being negative. While all 501 fecal samples from chicken flocks were found negative, E. coli O1

The pap gene clusters encode P fimbriae and fimbriae-associated G adhesins. DNA sequence analysis has resolved three G adhesin variants (papGJ96, papGIA2 and prsGJ96) that differ in receptor specificity and therefore in binding to epithelial cells. In this study, DNA probes specific for the pap gene cluster or the papGJ96, papGIA2 and prsGJ96 adhesin sequences were used to examine 74 fecal and 204 urinary Escherichia coli isolates (67 from acute pyelonephritis, 71 from acute cystitis and 66 from asymptomatic bacteriuria). In accordance with previous studies, a higher frequency of pap+ strains

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae, also referred to as pneumococcus, is of immense public health significance. In particular, it causes severe invasive diseases among children. This has led to the recommendation of anti-pneumococcal prophylaxis, including the administration of penicillin and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), which have become available in about 90% of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Nonetheless, breakthrough disease still occurs. Also, PCVs can cause a shift in the distribution of pneumococcal serotypes, usually towards non-vaccine types. However, in many sub-Sah

BACKGROUND: K48-linked ubiquitin chain (Ub-K48) is a crucial ubiquitin chain implicated in protein degradation within the ubiquitin-proteasome system. However, the precise function and molecular mechanism underlying the role of Ub-K48 in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and neuronal cell abnormalities remain unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the function of K48 ubiquitination in the etiology of AD, and its associated mechanism of neuronal apoptosis.
METHODS: A mouse model of AD was constructed, and behavioral phenotypic changes were detected using an open field t

BACKGROUND: Acute tubular injury is one of the main causes of acute tubular injury (acute kidney injury ) in patients with COVID-19 infection. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is also one of the autoimmune complications of COVID-19. However, AIHA accompanied by acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) caused by SARS-CoV-2 is rarely reported. Here, we report a kidney transplant recipient who underwent graftectomy owing to ATIN accompanied by AIHA, possibly exacerbated by COVID-19 infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old male renal allograft recipient owing to immunoglobulin A nephropathy

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a severe zoonotic disease that is often overlooked, particularly in impoverished countries. Timely identification of focal complications in brucellosis is crucial for improving treatment outcomes. However, there is currently a lack of established indicators or biomarkers for diagnosing these complications. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate potential warning signs of focal complications in human brucellosis, with the goal of providing practical parameters for clinicians to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients.
METHODS: A multi-center cross-section

Pathogenic E. coli are among the most frequently isolated bacterial pathogens on large-scale sheep farms in China. Antibiotic use in wool sheep production is a risk factor for promoting the emergence of resistant E. coli. To reveal the differences of E. coli populations in sheep from different farming systems the antimicrobial resistance, virulence genes, biofilm formation, and phylogroups of 500 E. coli isolates obtained between September 2019 and December 2020 in northwest China from diarrheic infections of intensive farming and free-range sheep were analyzed. The antimicrobial susceptibilit
