Trends in uterine cancer incidence and mortality: insights from a natural history model.

BACKGROUND: Uterine cancer incidence and mortality are increasing, with concomitant disparities in outcomes between racial groups. Natural history modeling can evaluate risk factors, predict future trends, and simulate approaches to reducing mortality and disparities. METHODS: We designed a natural history model of uterine cancer using a multistage clonal expansion design. The model is informed by National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, National Health Examination Survey, age, time period, birth cohort, and birth certificate data on reproductive histories and body mass index (BMI).

Ischemic Stroke Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes in the U.S.: National Trends and Demographic Disparities From 1999 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: The pathological changes in the lining of blood vessels associated with diabetes are a well-established risk factor for stroke, with some studies suggesting a two times increase in risk compared to non-diabetics. METHODS: Death certificates from the CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging OnLine Data for Epidemiologic Research) database were examined from 1999 to 2019 for ischemic stroke-related mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Annual percent change (APC) and age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 persons were calcul

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Participation during Pregnancy: Racial/ethnic Inequities among Medicaid-Covered Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, and Hispanic Women.

BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program improves infant, child, and maternal outcomes. While Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black women have higher WIC participation, evaluations among non-Hispanic Asian and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) populations and among granular racial/ethnic subgroups (e.g., Chinese) are limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate WIC participation during pregnancy among broad racial/ethnic categories and granular racial/ethnic subgroups, overall and by maternal nativity. METHODS: We used birth certificates fr

Incidence and mortality trends in congenital diaphragmatic hernia in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: The average incidence of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) in the United States (US) is 2.6 per 10,000 live births but it varies based on the population studied, the database used, and the study period. Further, previous studies suggest that pre-discharge mortality in CDH is declining but this may not capture the 'hidden mortality' and post-discharge mortality. We examined a population-based database to evaluate the trends in the incidence (2016-2023) and CDH-related infant mortality rate (CDH-IMR) [2007-2022] in the US. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional an

Trends, gender, and racial disparities in patients with mortality due to paroxysmal tachycardia: A nationwide analysis from 1999-2020.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal tachycardia encompasses various heart rhythm disorders that cause rapid heart rates. Its episodic occurrence makes it difficult to identify and measure its prevalence and trends in the population. Additionally, there is limited data on disparities and trends in mortality due to paroxysmal tachycardia, which is essential for assessing current medical approaches and identifying at-risk populations. METHODS: Our study examined death certificates from 1999 to 2020 using the CDC WONDER Database to identify deaths caused by paroxysmal tachycardia in individuals aged 25 and ol

Cancer Mortality among Hispanic Groups in the United States by Birthplace (2003-2017).

BACKGROUND: The Hispanic population is the second largest racial/ethnic group in the United States, consisting of multiple distinct ethnicities. Ethnicity-specific variations in cancer mortality may be attributed to countries of birth, so we aimed to understand differences in cancer mortality among disaggregated Hispanics by nativity (native- or foreign-born vs. US-born) over 15 years. METHODS: A total of 228,197 Hispanic decedents (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central or South American) with cancer-related deaths from US death certificates (2003-2017) were analyzed. Seven cancers that c

Hospital as a site of death of cancer patients in Italy: A registry-based analysis and time trends.

BACKGROUND: Place of death is relevant both for individuals and for the society. Home is universally considered the optimal place of death while dying in hospital may be a signal of inappropriate end-of-life care. We aimed at studying the place of death of patients with cancer in Italy in a five-year period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The death-certificate database published by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) was analysed, searching the place of death and the main disease related to death. Data from 2015 to 2019 were used, to exclude the influence of the COVID pandemic. Cancer

Neighbourhood Deprivation and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Arizona From the AzPEARS Study.

BACKGROUND: The maternal population residing in rural areas, tribal lands or near the United States-Mexico border are at high risk for adverse pregnancy complications, notably gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Few studies have considered the socioeconomic status (SES) attributes of neighbourhoods on maternal health during gestation. Given that the national and global rate of GDM is rising, this analysis moves beyond individual-level factors and investigates the role of neighbourhood deprivation on GDM risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between neighbourhood deprivation and ri
