BACKGROUND: Millions of women receive clinical breast examination (CBE) each year, as either a breast cancer screening test or a diagnostic test for breast symptoms. While screening CBE had moderately high specificity (approximately 94%) in clinical trials, community clinicians may be comparatively inexperienced and may conduct relatively brief examinations, resulting in even higher specificity but lower sensitivity.

OBJECTIVES: To describe participation among a community-based sample of adults with spinal cord injury (SCI) and to explore the relationship between participation and life satisfaction.

PARTICIPANTS: A sample of 357 people (response rate, 44%) with SCI recruited through the British Columbia Paraplegic Association. The mean age +/- standard deviation was 46.0+/-14.7 years, mean time since SCI was 13.0+/-11.0 years, and 68% of the respondents were men.

Terminal syringomyelia occurs in approximately 25% of patients with occult spinal dysraphism. Congenital spinal dermal sinus is an uncommon form of occult spinal dysraphism. This case report highlights the rare association of terminal syringomyelia communicating with a spinal dermal sinus, resulting in an unique clinical presentation. The origin of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemic in Egypt has been attributed to intravenous schistosomiasis treatment in rural areas in the 1960s to 70s. The objective of this study was to estimate the HCV-related morbidity in a rural area where mass schistosomiasis treatment campaigns took place 20-40 years before. Communicating bronchopulmonary foregut malformations are rare anomalies. The complex anatomy requires innovative surgical techniques. We report a child with bilateral sequestrations communicating with the lower esophagus. The sequestrations were excised through a single thoracotomy incision and the esophagus was repaired. Postoperatively the child has remained asymptomatic.

Tungiasis is a disease endemic to poor communities in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. It is caused by the female flea, Tunga penetrans, which burrows into the skin of its host to feed while producing and extruding eggs.
