BACKGROUND: While treatment of symptomatic sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) has been shown to reduce the incidence of HIV infection, there are few published reports describing the delivery of high quality STD care in Africa.
GOAL: To test the feasibility of providing comprehensive, affordable STD services through the existing primary care infrastructure.
DESIGN: STD treatment services using a syndromic' approach were established in two semi-urban hospital outpatient departments (OPD) in Central African Republic (CAR). A dedicated paramedical provider took a clinical history, performed an

OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence of HIV infection and risk behaviors in commercial sex workers (CSWs), drug users, and prisoners in Sindh, Pakistan.
METHODS: A medical clinic was established in a "red-light" district of Karachi. Eighty-one CSWs who registered at the clinic between November 1993 and June 1994 were provided HIV counseling and testing and administered a risk factor questionnaire. Next, 316 male drug users were tested for HIV-1 antibody from April to July 1994. Finally, a voluntary serosurvey of HIV-1 and HIV-2 and risk behaviors of 3525 prisoners in Sindh was conducted between

Data from a 1989 national probability sample of 8,098 high school students in the United States indicate that young people's discussions about the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with parents and with peers are highly correlated and have opposite effects on behavior. Students who discussed HIV with their parents were less likely than those who did not to have had multiple sex partners, to have had unprotected sexual intercourse and to have ever injected drugs; on the other hand, students who discussed HIV with their peers were more likely than those who did not to have had multiple partners

Exposure to sexual risk in early adolescence strongly predicts HIV infection, yet evidence for prevention in young adolescents is limited. We pooled data from two longitudinal South African surveys, with adolescents unexposed to sexual risk at baseline (n = 3662). Multivariable logistic regression tested associations between intermittent/consistent access to eight provisions and reduced sexual risk exposure. Participants were on average 12.8 years, 56% female at baseline. Between baseline and follow-up, 8.6% reported sexual risk exposure. Consistent access to caregiver supervision (OR 0.53 95%

PrEP's potential benefit for men who have sex with men (MSM) who use stimulants may be limited by adherence or prescriber willingness to recommend PrEP due to concerns of non-compliance. Using data from PATH-PrEP, a 48-week study evaluating PrEP for MSM in Los Angeles, we modeled an interaction between stimulant use and condomless sex with multiple partners (CAS-MP) on prevention-effective dried blood spot tenofovir-diphosphate concentrations. At week 4, participants reporting stimulant use and CAS-MP had a decreased odds of prevention-effective adherence compared to non-stimulant use and non-

INTRODUCTION: Although withdrawal use is routinely measured as part of contraceptive surveillance in the United States, its assessment may b … vent level regarding motivations for extra-vaginal ejaculation, pregnancy attitudes, perceptions of condoms and sexually transmitted infection prevention, or exposure to erotic media, thus limiting further assessment of relationships between various factors and extra-vaginal/anal ejaculation.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of poor sleep health (ie, poor sleep quality and short sleep duration) in a sample of men who have sex with men (MSM). In addition, this study examined whether poor sleep health was associated with depressive symptoms, substance use, and sexual risk behaviors in this sample.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.
PARTICIPANTS: Broadcast advertisements were placed on a popular smartphone application for MSM in January 2016 to recruit users in the London metropolitan area (n=202) to complete a Web-based survey, which included valida

History of forced or coerced sex work entry and/or sex work entry prior to age 18 (i.e., sex trafficking) relate to early HIV risk; whether such risk persists is unclear. The current study assessed associations of reported sex trafficking histories and recent sexual risk among adult HIV-infected female sex workers (FSWs; n = 211) in Mumbai, India. Approximately one-half reported entering sex work prior to age 18 (50.2 %) or being forced or coerced into sex work (41.7 %). Past 90-day unprotected transactional sex was more prevalent among FSWs entering as minors than those entering as adults (AO

BACKGROUND: Research has focused on male clients of female sex workers (FSWs) and their risk for HIV/sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, it is unclear whether the commercial sex behaviors of these men are limited to paying for sex or whether they may also be paid for sex themselves.
METHODS: We analyzed the interview data and HIV/STI test results from 170 drug-using male clients of FSWs in Tijuana, Mexico, to determine the extent to which these men report being paid for sex and the association with positive HIV/STI results.
RESULTS: More than one quarter of men reported having b

Marital breakup has been associated with numerous behavioral problems in children, such as sexual risk behaviors. This research is the first to examine sexual behaviors of Spanish adolescents related to whether their parents were married or divorced. Participants were 342 boys and girls aged between 14 and 18 years. The sample provided confidential information about their sexual behavior and birth control methods. Significant differences were only found in percentages of adolescents who had engaged in mutual masturbation, intercourse, or oral sex, and who had practiced these sexual relations i

Malawi, a very poor country located in southern Africa, is no exception to the growing trend and severity in HIV prevalence. By the end of 2003 there were 900 000 adults and children in Malawi living with HIV/AIDS. Adult prevalence was estimated to be 15%, which is higher than the 7.1% average rate for sub-Saharan Africa. In order to understand the spread of HIV/AIDS it is imperative to address the economic, social, cultural, and political issues that impact on women's contraction and spread of the virus. We do so in this paper by critically examining the gendered context of HIV/AIDS with refe

We aimed to assess the utility of various techniques for identifying gonorrhoea infection networks. All residents of a non-metropolitan North Carolina county visiting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic during a 17-month period were screened for gonorrhoea. Infection networks were estimated by serovar type combined with antibiotic resistance, arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR), or temporal clustering. The residential addresses of infected patients were geocoded and mapped. Among 2 serovar types, the presence of distinguishing characteristics of a network, based on qu
