[Artificial intelligence in health education: blessing or curse?].

Introduction: ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI that has brought significant advances in natural language processing. With GPT-4.0, the model is capable of human-level conversations, which is particularly useful in education and research. In healthcare education, students can practice patient admission in virtual situations, receiving real-time feedback. It also allows the personalisation of educational materials, tailored to the individual needs of students. Objective: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the potentials of ChatGPT, i.e., the application of artificial in

A comprehensive lung CT landmark pair dataset for evaluating deformable image registration algorithms.

PURPOSE: Deformable image registration (DIR) is a key enabling technology in many diagnostic and therapeutic tasks, but often does not meet the required robustness and accuracy for supporting clinical tasks. This is in large part due to a lack of high-quality benchmark datasets by which new DIR algorithms can be evaluated. Our team was supported by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering to develop DIR benchmark dataset libraries for multiple anatomical sites, comprising of large numbers of highly accurate landmark pairs on matching blood vessel bifurcations. Here we in

Cranial ultrasound in preterm infants ≤ 32 weeks gestation-novel insights from the use of very high-frequency (18-5 MHz) transducers: a case series.

The quality of cranial ultrasound has improved over time, with advancing technology leading to higher resolution, faster image processing, digital display, and back-up. However, some brain lesions may remain difficult to characterize: since higher frequencies result in greater spatial resolution, the use of additional transducers may overcome some of these limitations. The very high-frequency transducers (18-5 MHz) are currently employed for small parts and lung ultrasound. Here we report the first case series comparing the very high-frequency probes (18-5 MHz) with standard micro-convex probe

Development of a new Peyronie's disease self-assessment screening app.

Peyronie's disease (PD) is an underdiagnosed and undertreated fibroproliferative disorder associated with the formation of plaques that results in penile curvature and discourages some men from seeking medical consultation. The PD self-assessment app, a digital application (app), was developed to increase PD awareness, provide men with a self-screening and educational tool for PD, and help eliminate barriers to seeking consultation with a physician. Prior to deployment, 4 board-certified urologists provided qualitative reviews on the app's usability and utility as a screening tool. The PD self

Computer-aided screening of aspiration risks in dysphagia with wearable technology: a Systematic Review and meta-analysis on test accuracy.

Aspiration caused by dysphagia is a prevalent problem that causes serious health consequences and even death. Traditional diagnostic instruments could induce pain, discomfort, nausea, and radiation exposure. The emergence of wearable technology with computer-aided screening might facilitate continuous or frequent assessments to prompt early and effective management. The objectives of this review are to summarize these systems to identify aspiration risks in dysphagic individuals and inquire about their accuracy. Two authors independently searched electronic databases, including CINAHL, Embase,

Expanding access to rehabilitation using mobile health to address musculoskeletal pain and disability.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders such as low back pain and osteoarthritis are a leading cause of disability and the leading contributor to the need for rehabilitation services globally. This need has surpassed the availability of trained clinicians; even in urban areas where services and providers are thought to be more abundant, access can be challenged by transportation options and financial costs associated with travel, care and lost time from work. However, continuing standard of fully in-person rehabilitation care for MSK-associated pain and disability may no longer be necess

Projected Savings Associated with Lowering the Risk of Total Hip Arthroplasty Revision Due to Dislocation in Patients with Spinopelvic Pathology.

PURPOSE: In the United States (US), total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the most common hospital inpatient operation among Medicare beneficiaries and is ranked fourth when considering all payers. Spinopelvic pathology (SPP) is associated with an increased risk of THA revision (rTHA) due to dislocation. Several strategies have been proposed to mitigate the risk of instability in this population, including use of dual-mobility implants, anterior-based surgical approaches, and technology-assistance (digital 2D/3D pre-surgical planning, computer navigation, and robotic assistance). For primary THA (pT

Effectiveness of the Med Safety mobile application in improving adverse drug reaction reporting by healthcare professionals in Uganda: a protocol for a pragmatic cluster-randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has massively reduced HIV mortality. However, long-term cART increases the risk of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), which can lead to higher morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs for people living with HIV (PLHIV).Pharmacovigilance-monitoring the effects of medicines-is essential for understanding real-world drug safety. In Uganda, pharmacovigilance systems have only recently been developed, and rates of ADR reporting for cART are very low. Thus, the safety profile of medicines currently used to treat HIV and tuberculosis in our populat

Reimagining leprosy elimination with AI analysis of a combination of skin lesion images with demographic and clinical data.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is an infectious disease that mostly affects underserved populations. Although it has been largely eliminated, still about 200'000 new patients are diagnosed annually. In the absence of a diagnostic test, clinical diagnosis is often delayed, potentially leading to irreversible neurological damage and its resulting stigma, as well as continued transmission. Accelerating diagnosis could significantly contribute to advancing global leprosy elimination. Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven technology has shown potential to augment health workers abilities in making f

Protocol for the reconstruction of micromammals from fossils. Two case studies: The skulls of Beremendia fissidens and Dolinasorex glyphodon.

We have developed a protocol for reconstructing 3D models of the skulls of extinct species of small mammals. For the first time, the reconstruction uses fragments of fossils from a mixture of different specimens and from related extant species. We use free software and commercial computers to make the process reproducible and usable for the scientific community. We present a semi-quantitative protocol to face the problem of making 3D reconstructions of fossil species that are incomplete in the fossil record and/or represented by a mixture of different individuals, as usually occurs with small

Blunt cerebrovascular injury screening with 64-channel multidetector computed tomography: more slices finally cut it.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive screening to diagnose blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) results in early treatment, leading to improved outcomes and reduced stroke rates. While computed tomographic angiography (CTA) has been widely adopted for BCVI screening, evidence of its diagnostic sensitivity is marginal. Previous work from our institution using 32-channel multidetector CTA in 684 patients demonstrated an inadequate sensitivity of 51% (Ann Surg. 2011,253: 444-450). Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) continues to be the reference standard of diagnosis but has significant drawbacks of invasiven
