Hypopharyngeal diverticula are relatively unknown, with the exception of Zenker's diverticulum. Spot-camera and videorecording techniques were employed for the examination of 95 dysphagic and 250 asymptomatic patients. On the whole, 345 cases. 40% of diverticula were found in dysphagic patients, and 14% in asymptomatic ones. Fifty diverticula were detected through the thyrohyoid membrane, and 14 pseudodiverticula, 4 Zenker's diverticula, 4 lateral diverticula at the pharyngoesophageal junction, and 2 outpouchings through the tonsillar fossa. A statistically significant correlation (p less than…

From 1976 to 1981 111 transurethral operations were performed in 93 children; 39 bladder neck incisions or resections, 43 urethrotomies, 6 resections of urethral valves, 13 transversal incisions of ureteroceles, 7 transurethral biopsies in suspected bladder tumors and 3 resections of the neck of a bladder diverticulum were done. Complications were seen especially in the myelodysplasia-group. Multi-resistant bacteriuria was found in many children even before therapy. Hospital-induced fungal infections were seen twice. Malfunctioning of the hydrocephalus drainage-system developed once after tran…

Objective: Most patients with asymptomatic colorectal diverticulosis are easily overlooked. However, some of diverticulosis become diverticu … g operation. There were 339 patients with multiple diverticula (61.2%) and 215 patients with single diverticulum (38.8%). 76.5% (424/554) of diverticula were located in colon, 37.0% (205/554) in ascending colon, 21.3% (118/554) in multiple sites, and 2.2% (12/554) in rectum. The median diameter of diverticulum was 7 mm, and 78 cases (14.1%) was ≥30 mm. Forty-n …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is focused on diagnostic and management strategies for colonic diverticular bleeding (CDB). It aims to present the current state of the field, highlighting the available techniques, and emphasizing findings that influence the choice of therapy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent guidelines recommend nonurgent colonoscopy (>24 h) for CDB. However, factors such as a shock index ≥1, which may warrant an urgent colonoscopy, remain under investigation. The standard approach to detecting the source of CDB requires a water-jet scope equipped with a cap. Innovative diagnostic techn

The CT Colonography Reporting and Data System (C-RADS) has withstood the test of time and proven to be a robust classification scheme for CT colonography (CTC) findings. C-RADS version 2023 represents an update on the scheme used for colorectal and extracolonic findings at CTC. The update provides useful insights gained since the implementation of the original system in 2005. Increased experience has demonstrated confusion on how to classify the mass-like appearance of the colon consisting of soft tissue attenuation that occurs in segments with acute or chronic diverticulitis. Therefore, the u

Acquired outpouches of the intestinal tract are referred to as pseudodiverticula or false pulsion diverticula. In contrast to true diverticula, in which the wall contains all layers of the intestinal tract, the wall of pseudodiverticula lacks the tunica muscularis. Smooth muscle hypertrophy of the small intestine is commonly considered a cause of pseudodiverticulosis in animals due to increased intraluminal pressure. This study reports pseudodiverticula associated with idiopathic smooth muscle hypertrophy of the small intestine in lagomorphs. Four domestic rabbits had single or multiple (up to

Diverticulosis of the appendix is a relatively rare pathological finding. The majority are acquired pseudodiverticula. True congenital diverticula are very rare. Appendiceal diverticulosis is usually an incidental finding and clinically asymptomatic. When symptomatic, it is usually complicated by acute or chronic diverticulitis with or without acute appendicitis. It presents with atypical abdominal signs and symptoms, mostly in adult males. Appendiceal diverticulitis is a distinct entity with several clinical and pathological differences from acute appendicitis. It has a more rapid progression

The authors present a case report of a 61-years old female with 12 month history of deteriorative chronic pain located in epigastrium and propagating to her back, tabescence and upper dyspeptic syndrome. The first grade oesophagitis and duodenogastric reflux were verified endoscopically. There were adequate biliary tree as well as pancreatic duct and two high-volumed parapapillar diverticula and the third one in the region of D 3 depicted by ERCP and enteroclysis. Neither ultrasound nor computed tomography detected any pancreatic or hepatic pathology. All the alternatives of internal medical t

The authors report a case of Meckel diverticulitis secondary to an enterolith in a young man with abdominal pain, fever, and sepsis. In this rare complication, the diagnosis was made, in emergency, on 3D reconstructed images showing the tubular structure connected to the small bowel.

A diagnosis of intestinal diverticulosis is difficult to make pre-operatively because the clinical symptoms are usually non-specific. We report the case of a 70-year-old man who had suffered from three episodes of intestinal obstruction in 1 year. He experienced dull pain and a sensation of fullness over the whole abdomen. The symptoms did not improve after conservative treatment. The presumptive diagnosis was intestinal obstruction, and an exploratory laparotomy found diverticulosis of the proximal jejunum, with an adhesion band formed from the base of one diverticulum. Strangulation of a seg…

BACKGROUND: The development of endoscopic techniques, particularly endoscopic stapling, has led to a re-evaluation of the treatment of pharyngeal pouch. The pathophysiology and treatment of the condition is reviewed.
METHODS: An electronic literature search was undertaken on the pathophysiology, history and surgery of pharyngeal pouch (Zenker's diverticulum). These last two terms were used to the search the Cochrane, Medline and Embase databases (from 1966 to date) and the bibliographies of extracted articles.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: With recognition of the central role of the cricopharyngeu…

Bleeding related to diverticular disease occurs in 10 to 30% of patients suffering from diverticular disease. Haemorrhage varies from occult to massive bleeding. Bleeding is related to mechanical aggression of the artery in the wall of a diverticulum. Bleeding prevalence is not exactly known. In 1 to 7% of cases, massive bleeding is observed; diverticular disease is thus the most common cause of major lower gastrointestinal tract haemorrhage, followed by angiodysplasias. Although 95% of diverticular involve the sigmoid colon, more than 50% of bleeding diverticular occur in the right colon. Cla…
