In this 5-year follow-up study, 60 auricular non-melanoma skin cancers, selected at a skin tumour clinic, were treated by a thorough curettage with different sized curettes followed by cryosurgery in a double freeze-thaw cycle. OBJECTIVE: The Visual Input/Output Locator Algorithm (VIOLA) is a software-assisted method for prescribing amplification targets and selecting a hearing aid to match the targets. A group of 88 otitis-prone children, 66% boys and 34% girls, born in 1978-81 with more than 11 episodes of acute otitis media, were examined in 1984-85. The masking-level difference (MLD) was measured in a group of adult listeners having unilateral otosclerosis before stapedectomy surgery, 1 month following surgery, and 1 year following surgery. We investigated tubal function by equalization manometry in 68 patients with unilateral traumatic perforation of the tympanic membrane, and in 116 patients with chronic mesotympanic suppuration (85 dry and 31 discharging ears). Our criterion of normal tubal function is the ability to equalize a difference in pressure of +/- 30 hPa by means of at most 7 swallowings. This result was achieved in only 25% of the dry perforations and in none of the patients with discharging ears. Normal tubal function may only be expected in 25% of patients with chronic otitis media.

The audiograms of some patients suffering from Meniere's disease show an unexplained conductive component, or air-bone gap (ABG), predominantly in the low frequencies.
