OBJECTIVE: To investigate and analyze the status of anxiety and depression among patients with four types of peripheral vertigo.
METHOD: The clinical data of patients with one of the four types of peripheral vertigo, namely benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular migraine (VM), Menière's disease (MD), and vestibular neuritis (VN), were collected. Thorough otological and neuro-otological examinations were performed on these patients, and their status of anxiety and depression were assessed using self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS).
RESULT: A

OBJECTIVES: We studied the role of intratympanic lidocaine instillation as part of the treatment for vertigo in Menière's disease.
METHODOLOGY: We retrospectively analyzed 40 patients who underwent 74 labyrinth anaesthesias in our center between 1996 and 2006. We studied the attack-free period after instillation, the effect of repetitive procedures and the efficacy according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) (1995) criteria.
RESULTS: Labyrinth anaesthesia was effective in 70% of the studied procedures. If effective, the mean duration of the attack-free

Western Atlantic sciaenids comprise a taxonomically diverse teleost family with significant variations in the relationship between the swim bladder and the otic capsule. In this study, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was used to test the hypothesis that fishes with different peripheral auditory structures (black drum, Pogonias chromis and Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus) show differences in frequency selectivity. In a black drum the swim bladder is relatively distant from the otic capsule while the swim bladder in Atlantic croaker possesses anteriorly-directed diverticulas that

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to assess whether the translabyrinthine approach for acoustic tumor removal offers better postoperative facial nerve function compared with the retrosigmoid approach.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review from a tertiary otology referral center.
METHODS: Patients who had undergone either retrosigmoid or translabyrinthine approach for removal of acoustic neuroma from January 1, 1980, to December 31, 1999, were included in the study. Two groups of patients were created, one containing retrosigmoid cases and the other, translabyrinthine. Attempts were

The authors report on the possible advantages acetazolamide, in conjunction with Positional Impedenzometry, can provide in the detection of minor labyrinthine hydrops and major labyrinthine fluid tension disorders. This study was carried out using the case/control method. The subjects were selected on the basis of symptoms and clinical examination revealing signs of endolymphatic hydrops. Tonal audiometry and positional impedenzometry according to Marullo were performed both before (pre-test) and after i.v. administration of 500 mg sodium acetazolamide (post-ACZ1 and post-ACZ2). Audiometry sho

We examined growth potential of residual intracanalicular tumours left from subtotal removal of large acoustic neurinomas. Eleven patients were followed-up by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The interval between surgery and MR study ranged from 12 to 29 years (median, 16 years). MR images of two patients showed no evidence of tumour remnant, and in six a small tumour was localized in the internal auditory canal. The other three showed an intracanalicular tumour protruding slightly towards the intracranial portion. This result suggests that the intracanalicular residual tumours have less risk

Amongst the 62 patients operated for acoustic neuroma using a translabyrinthine approach, the authors study post operatory results at one month of the facial function according to the "House-Brackmann" classification. The analysis consists in 2 homogeneous and comparable series of 34 and 28 patients having benefited or not of a per operatory monitoring of the facial nerve with "NIM 2" neuro monitor. Without distinction of the tumoral sizes 76% of patients show a good facial result when monitorized against 60.7% when not. According to the tumoral size monitoring becomes more interesting: also y

The effectiveness of pursuit gain, cancellation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex, and a clinical oscillopsia test were assessed as vestibular function tests and tests that may allow prediction of which patients would compensate poorly after vestibular surgery. Cancellation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in 17 patients and 17 control subjects was compared. Pursuit gain for 17 patients was determined for three frequencies at peak velocities of 25 and 50 degrees/sec. The oscillopsia test was administered to seven patients during at least the first 6 postoperative months. We are unable to state that

Otospongiosis-like lesions were induced in rats by immunizing them with type II collagen. After seven months' immunization, the rats were killed and processed for histologic study. We found otospongiotic lesions in the bony cochlea, vestibule, semicircular canal, and in the regions near the oval window and round window. The spongiotic lesions in the otic capsules were similar to human otospongiosis and were characterized by the following types of microscopic appearances. 1) The classic type showed enlarged vascular spaces with congestion, macrophages, fibroblasts, and sometimes osteoclasts. 2)

The influence of unilateral labyrinthectomy on vestibulospinal balance function in patients with Ménière's disease is studied with a gravicorder. Our data disclosed that vestibulospinal balance recovery was better when tested in the light, including the total length and area. Moreover, this quantitative test which measures changes in the center of gravity in standing subjects revealed that total length recovery was almost achieved within 5 weeks when measured in the light but required 12 months when measured in the dark; total area was almost in the normal range within 1 week when measured in

The direct route to the cerebellopontine (CP) angle through the ear (retrolabyrinthine approach) represents a significant advance in neuro-otologic surgery. After incising the dura between the endolymphatic sac and the lateral venous sinus, a self-retaining retractor is used to collapse the lateral sinus, which provides a wide exposure of the CP angle, with visualization of the 5th through 11th cranial nerves. The retrolabyrinthine approach is a safe and direct route to the CP angle and has advantages over the suboccipital approach. Vestibular neurectomy through the retrolabyrinthine approach

Using the Mössbauer technique, we have studied the vibration of the human basilar membrane and malleus head in the sound frequency range 0.2--9.0 kHz and at a sound pressure of 100 dB at the tympanic membrane. The displacement frequency response curves for the basilar membrane and the malleus head have similar shapes, with a maximum at about 1 kHz. Below and above 1 kHz the curves have a slope of about 10 dB/octave and--100 dB/octave, respectively. In addition, the basilar membrane has a maximum displacement at a frequency dependent distance from the stapes. A simple hydrodynamic model for the

The rationale for endolymphatic sac and tack operations is to prevent the further accumulation of endolymph, the former by draining endolymph into extralabyrinthine tissues and the latter by shunting endolymph into the perilymphatic space. While the basic concepts are reasonable enough, the probability of achieving these objectives seems remote. There appears to be adequate clinical evidence, however, to show that these procedures are of therapeutic value in selected cases. It is tempting to speculate that these surgical insults to the labyrinth, with the associated inflammatory and biochemica

The value of the radiobiological diagnosis in establishing the localization of a facial palsy resulting from temporal bone fractures has been investigated in 49 cases. Radiological confirmation was found in 21 out of 37 cases of longitudinal fracture and in 11 out of 12 patients (90%) with a transverse fracture. The fracture line was seen by polytomography alone in 1 out of 21 (5%) longitudinal fractures and in 5 out of 11 (45%) transverse fractures. A precise readiological localization of the facial nerve lesion was only possible if the fracutre line was running across the long axis of the py
