Her Health Behavior, Her Choice? Decision-Making Power Over Key Health and Nutrition Behaviors Among Pregnant and Lactating Women in Jordan.

Women's participation in family diet and health decisions is strongly associated with better family outcomes.  We examined decision-making power among participants in a Community Health and Nutrition Program in Jordan, which sought to improve maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) and modern contraception through service-provider training and media campaigns. Cross-sectional surveys in Amman, Karak, and Zarqa governates enrolled 3518 pregnant/lactating women (PLW) in the program (2021-23).  PLW respondents indicated whether receiving messages about MIYCN and contraceptive use chan

Association between Dietary Behavior and Mental Health in Adolescents from Multicultural and Non-Multicultural Families in Korea.

Background/Objectives: The growing population of multicultural adolescents (MCAs) has become a vital focus for national health policy. Despite their increasing numbers, MCAs often encounter unique socioeconomic challenges and dietary issues that may heighten mental health vulnerabilities. This study aimed to assess the dietary behaviors of MCA and non-MCA and to explore the association between these behaviors and mental health outcomes, specifically generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and severity of suicidal behavior. Methods: Using data from the 2024 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, we analy

Understanding Solo Dining as a Multifaceted Behavioural Response: Social Anxiety, Loneliness and Well-Being.

This study examines the psychological mechanisms underlying solo dining in the 'loneliness economy'. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), it explores relationships among social anxiety, loneliness, solo dining intentions and dependency orientation as a moderator. Because solo dining may reflect both voluntary solitude and avoidance-based solitude, the present model primarily tests the avoidance-linked pathway associated with social anxiety and loneliness. Findings show that loneliness is significantly associated with solo dining behaviour, especially among individuals with high dependenc

Amylin Modulates a Ventral Tegmental Area-to-Medial Prefrontal Cortex Circuit to Suppress Food Intake and Impulsive Food-Directed Behavior.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of the neural mechanisms regulating impaired satiety to palatable foods is essential to treat hyperphagia linked with obesity. The satiation hormone amylin signals centrally at multiple nuclei including the ventral tegmental area (VTA). VTA-to-medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) projections encode food reward information to influence behaviors including impulsivity. We hypothesized that modulation of VTA-to-mPFC neurons underlies amylin-mediated decreases in palatable food-motivated behaviors. METHODS: We used a variety of pharmacological, behavioral, genetic, a

Use of Food Services by Consumers in the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic. How the Eating Habits of Consumers Changed in View of the New Disease Risk Factors?

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020-2021 changed the eating habits of people around the world. The aim of this study is to understand the effects of COVID-19 on changing consumers' eating habits, including their concerns about food service nutrition in case of new disease risk factors. The survey conducted using the computer-assisted web-based interviewing method on a group of 1021 adult respondents in Poland. We collected information about consumer choices and habits related to use of food services during the pandemic. This research found that COVID-19 had an impact on consumers' use of food serv

Bionomics and ecology of Anopheles merus along the East and Southern Africa coast.

Malaria transmission persists despite the scale-up of interventions such as long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS). Understanding the entomological drivers of transmission is key for the design of effective and sustainable tools to address the challenge. Recent research findings indicate a shift in vector populations from the notorious Anopheles gambiae (s.s.) as a dominant vector to other species as one of the factors contributing to the persistence of malaria transmission. However, there are gaps in the literature regarding the minor vector species w

Effect of chemogenetic inhibition of lateral habenula neuronal activity on cocaine- and food-seeking behaviors in the rat.

A major problem in the treatment of cocaine addiction is high rates of relapse. Relapse is often provoked by acute reexposure to cocaine-associated cues or to cocaine itself. The lateral habenula (LHb), an epithalamic nucleus, regulates midbrain dopaminergic systems that are known to be involved in cocaine taking and seeking behaviors. However, the role of this nucleus in cocaine self-administration and reinstatement of cocaine seeking has not been entirely parsed out. We used an operant self-administration and reinstatement procedure to explore the effect of Designer Receptors Exclusively Act

Prospective Analysis of Food Consumption and Nutritional Status and the Impact on the Dietary Inflammatory Index in Women with Breast Cancer during Chemotherapy.

Considering the implications of adverse effects of chemotherapy (CT) and the potential impact of diet on patients' recovery, this study aimed to prospectively evaluate the association between the consumption of food groups, patients' Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) scores, and their nutritional status. Anthropometric and dietary assessments of 55 women with breast cancer (BC) were performed at three time points. T0 is the time point after the first CT cycle, T1 is the time point after the intermediate CT cycle, and T2 is the time point after the last CT cycle. We identified a significant inc

Being born small-for-gestational-age is associated with an unfavourable dietary intake in Danish adolescent girls: findings from the Danish National Birth Cohort.

Individuals born small have an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Altered food preferences in these subjects seem to play a role; however, limited evidence is available on the association between being born small-for-gestational-age (SGA) at term and food intake in adolescence. Alterations in leptin, ghrelin and dopamine levels are suggested mechanisms linking SGA with later food intake. From a large prospective Danish National Birth Cohort, we compared dietary intake of adolescents being born SGA with normal-for-gestational-age (NGA) adolescents. Intake of foods and nutrients was

Direct Effects of the Home, School, and Consumer Food Environments on the Association between Food Purchasing Patterns and Dietary Intake among Rural Adolescents in Kentucky and North Carolina, 2017.

Background: Obesity rates are higher among rural versus urban adolescents. To examine possible mechanisms for the rural-urban adolescent obesity disparity, we examined the direct and indirect effects of food purchasing patterns, and the home, school, and consumer food environments on dietary intake among rural adolescents. Methods: A baseline survey was conducted among adolescents in eight rural high schools (four in Eastern Kentucky, and four in Eastern North Carolina). Participants answered questions about food purchasing patterns, dietary intake, home food availability, and demographics. Th

Five years' follow-up of dental fear and anxiety, experience of dental care and oral health behaviour in Swedish preterm and full-term adolescents.

BACKGROUND: There is rising concern about how preterm birth affects long-term health later in life. The various effects that preterm birth have on developmental outcomes, cognitive profiles and medical health may also affect levels of cooperation in the dental care situation in addition to general oral health and other oral health-related habits. Oral health is an integral part of one's general health and well-being; however, less is known about how prematurity affects oral health and other related areas such as dental care, and including dental fear and anxiety (DFA) in individuals during ado

A host stage-structured model of enzootic West Nile virus transmission to explore the effect of avian stage-dependent exposure to vectors.

Though seasonal West Nile virus (WNV) outbreaks have been widely observed to be associated with the end of the avian nesting season, specific ecological mechanisms accounting for this synchronicity remain poorly understood. In this paper we develop and evaluate a novel mathematical model of enzootic WNV transmission to gain insight into the mechanisms responsible for structuring WNV dynamics. We incorporate avian (host) stage-structure (nestling, fledgling, and adult) and within-species heterogeneity in the form of stage-specific mosquito (vector) biting rates. We determine the extent to which

Smell differential reactivity, but not taste differential reactivity, is related to food neophobia in toddlers.

Previous research has identified relationships between chemosensory reactivity and food neophobia in children. However, most studies have investigated this relationship using declarative data and without separately analysing smell and taste reactivity. Our first objective was to assess the relationships between smell and taste differential reactivity in toddlers (i.e. reactivity towards several stimuli), using experimental behavioural measurements. The second objective was to determine the relationships between smell (or taste) differential reactivity and food neophobia in toddlers, with the h
