Dietary Heat-Treatment Contaminants Exposure and Cancer: A Case Study from Turkey.

In this study, the 10-year dietary habits of patients diagnosed with cancer (n = 1155) were retrospectively analyzed, and the relationships between dietary (red meat, white meat, fish meat, French fries, bread, instant coffee, ready-to-drink coffee, Turkish coffee, and black tea) heterocyclic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, acrylamide, and N-nitrosamine-based risk scores and cancer types were statistically evaluated. The foods with the highest and lowest mean dietary heat-treatment contaminant risk scores were red meat and ready-to-drink coffee, respectively. There were statistically

Hemolytic uremic syndrome due to Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection.

The leading cause of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in children is Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection, which has a major outbreak potential. Since the early 2010s, STEC epidemiology is characterized by a decline of the historically predominant O157 serogroup and the emergence of non-O157 STEC, especially O26 and O80 in France. STEC contamination occurs through the ingestion of contaminated food or water, person-to-person transmission, or contact with ruminants or their contaminated environment. The main symptom is diarrhea, which is bloody in about 60% of patients and occ

Importance of organic amendment characteristics on bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soil.

This study investigates the importance of the organic matter characteristics of several organic amendments (i.e., buffalo manure, food and kitchen waste, fruit and vegetables waste, and activated sewage sludge) and their influence in the bioremediation of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)-contaminated soil. The removal of low molecular weights (LMW) and high molecular weights (HMW) PAHs was monitored in four bioremediation reactors and used as an indicator of the role of organic amendments in contaminant removal. The total initial concentration of LMW PAHs was 234 mg kg(-1) soil (dry we

Comparison of aquatic and dietary exposure of heavy metals Cd, Cu, and Zn to benthic ostracod Heterocypris incongruens.

The benthic ostracod Heterocypris incongruens is becoming an important tool for the ecotoxicological assessment of contaminated sediments. However, no study has yet explored solid-phase (dietary) exposure to ostracod. The present study examined the effects of metals on H. incongruens through aquatic and dietary exposures. The algal food Chlorella vulgaris was exposed to different concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn), and subcellular distributions of these metals in algal cells were determined. Parallel experiments were also performed to determine the toxic effects of diss

Fate of Cd during microbial Fe(III) mineral reduction by a novel and Cd-tolerant Geobacter species.

Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides affect the mobility of contaminants in the environment by providing reactive surfaces for sorption. This includes the toxic metal cadmium (Cd), which prevails in agricultural soils and is taken up by crops. Fe(III)-reducing bacteria can mobilize such contaminants by Fe(III) mineral dissolution or immobilize them by sorption to or coprecipitation with secondary Fe minerals. To date, not much is known about the fate of Fe(III) mineral-associated Cd during microbial Fe(III) reduction. Here, we describe the isolation of a new Geobacter sp. strain Cd1 from a Cd-contaminated

Efficacy of washing and sanitizing trailers used for swine transport in reduction of Salmonella and Escherichia coli.

Healthy pigs can carry Salmonella in their intestine and may shed this pathogen because of stresses incurred during transportation, contaminating trailer floors and bedding material. If not cleaned and sanitized between trips, trailers and bedding have the potential to infect other farms, the abattoir environment, or other animals with Salmonella. Floors and bedding material from pig trailers were sampled to determine the efficacy of the abattoir-developed washing and sanitizing regime on the level of Salmonella before and after a single haul. Escherichia coli levels were an indicator of high

An Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination of Rice Varieties Produced Across India States with a Lens of Rising Cancer Burden.

BACKGROUND: Rice is a dietary staple for more than half of the global population, particularly in Asia. However, its vulnerability to accumulating environmental heavy metal contaminants during its production and processing raises significant public health concerns. Chronic exposure to arsenic and lead has carcinogenic health effects, posing a risk of lung, bladder, liver, and breast cancer. This study examines arsenic and lead contamination in rice varieties across different locations in India and their ecological associations with prevailing cancer. METHODS: Rice samples were collected from

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals in seafood from two Brazilian coastal areas: Implication for human risk assessment.

Pharmaceuticals (PhACs) are considered emerging contaminants with potential accumulation in aquatic organisms. Thus, seafood consumption may cause long-term effects and health risk for consumers. In the present study, the occurrence of PhACs in seafood from two Brazilian coastal areas, Sepetiba Bay (n = 43) and Parnaiba Delta River (n = 48), was determined for the first time, and their potential risk for human health was assessed. An eco-friendly multi-analytes method was used, after being validated for the different types of matrices (mussels, fatty and lean fish). All compounds under study w

Genetic diversity and pathogenic potential of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) derived from German flour.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) can cause severe human illness, which are frequently linked to the consumption of contaminated beef or dairy products. However, recent outbreaks associated with contaminated flour and undercooked dough in the United States and Canada, highlight the potential of plant based food as transmission routes for STEC. In Germany STEC has been isolated from flour, but no cases of illness have been linked to flour. In this study, we characterized 123 STEC strains isolated from flour and flour products collected between 2015 and 2019 across Germany. In additi

[Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in animals].

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in animals are known for centuries. In particular scrapie in sheep and goats occurs worldwide; it spreads as a natural disease and is genetically controlled. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the United States (Wyoming and Colorado) also spreads as natural disease among free ranging and captive elk and mule deer. In contrast, transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) of mink in fur producing farms is caused by contaminated feed; the source of this food contamination is still controversial. The only occurrence of a TSE in an avian species was reported from…

β-Lactam antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in Asian lakes and rivers: An overview of contamination, sources and detection methods.

Lakes and rivers are sources of livelihood, food and water in many parts of the world. Lakes provide natural resources and valuable ecosystem services. These aquatic ecosystems are also vulnerable to known and new environmental pollutants. Emerging water contaminants are now being studied including antibiotics because of the global phenomenon on antibiotic resistance. β-Lactam antibiotics are widely used in human and animal disease prevention or treatment. The emergence of antibiotic resistance is a public health threat when bacteria become more resistant and infections consequently increase r

Experimental simulation of somatic and germ cell genotoxicity in male Mus musculus fed extracts of lead contaminated Pleurotus ostreatus (white rot fungi).

Exposure to lead (Pb) is a major risk factor in reproductive toxicity, somatic, and germ cell genotoxicity. Exposure via deteriorating Pb paints and contaminated air, soil, and water had been the primary routes. However, with increasing reports of Pb accumulation in mushrooms and other food items may increase the etiology of Pb poisoning. The study herein investigated somatic genotoxicity and reproductive abnormalities in mice fed extracts of Pb-contaminated Pleurotus ostreatus. Male mice were fed aqueous extracts of P. ostreatus cultivated in 0, 10, 20, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 mg/L of Pb-cont

Activated carbon mitigates mercury and methylmercury bioavailability in contaminated sediments.

There are few available in situ remediation options for Hg contaminated sediments, short of capping. Here we present the first tests of activated carbon and other sorbents as potential in situ amendments for remediation of mercury and methylmercury (MeHg), using a study design that combined 2 L sediment/water microcosms with 14 day bioaccumulation assays. Our key end points were pore water concentrations, and bioaccumulation of total Hg and MeHg by a deposit-feeding oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus. Four amendments were tested: an activated carbon (AC); CETCO Organoclay MRM (MRM); Thiol-SAMM

Lead and copper in pigeons (Columbia livia) exposed to a small arms-range soil.

Small arms-range (SAR) soils can be contaminated with metals from spent copper (Cu)-jacketed bullets. Avian species are particularly at risk because they are exposed to lead (Pb) through ingestion of grit, soil intake from preening, or ingestion of contaminated food near ranges. Examination of the effects of Pb on birds at ranges have mainly focused on intake and toxicity of Pb shot pellets or fragments; however, Pb in soils may be an important pathway of exposure. To evaluate the uptake and effects of Pb from an actual range, the soil fraction (<250 μm) from a contaminated SAR soil was used t

[Prevalence and molecular detection of human Cryptosporidium infections: a review].

Cryptosporidium is an important intestinal parasite that is mainly transmitted through the fecal-oral route. Human infection may occur following ingestion of water and food contaminated by Cryptosporidium oocysts, and children and immunocompromised individuals are at a high risk of infections. The main symptoms of Cryptosporidium infections include diarrhea, vomiting, malnutrition, and even death. Because of high sensitivity and rapid procedures, molecular tests are helpful for the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis and may reduce the public health risk of cryptosporidiosis. This review summarizes

A first molecular characterization of Listeria monocytogenes isolates circulating in humans from 2009 to 2014 in the Italian Veneto region.

Listeriosis is a disease usually associated with the consumption of low-processed ready-to-eat food products contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes. In Italy, listeriosis has an incidence of 0.19-0.27 cases per 100000 persons. Since detailed information concerning the molecular characterization of listeriosis in the Italian Veneto region is currently lacking, we analyzed 36 L. monocytogenes clinical isolates collected between 2009 and 2014. Results show that the serotype 1/2a was the most represented among the tested samples. No antimicrobial resistance was detected in selected isolates repres

First report of invasive amebiasis in an organ transplant recipient.

T-cell mediated immunity is an important defense mechanism against amebiasis. However, organ transplant recipients with severe T-cell immunosuppression are not at increased risk of having Entamoeba histolytica invasive disease. The reasons are unclear and probably multifactorial, but it is likely that the absence of intestinal colonization with pathogenic strains in countries where transplants occur and the judicious intake of possible contaminated food and water are important contributing factors. We describe the first report of a liver transplant recipient with severe E. histolytica colitis
