Delayed diagnosis of cervical spine injuries.

Over a 32-month period, the cases of all patients with multiple injuries on whom cervical spine roentgenograms (CSRs) were obtained during blunt trauma evaluation in a trauma center were reviewed to determine the incidence, outcome, and clinical consequence of delayed diagnosis of cervical spine injuries. A total of 1,331 patients had CSRs following blunt injury. Sixty-one (4.6%) of the patients had documented cervical fractures or dislocations. The patients were seriously injured (mean Trauma Score, 12; mean Glasgow Coma Scale score, 11; and mean Injury Severity Score, 30.3). Eleven of the pa

Pull-out technique with footprint rivet repair of femoral-sided avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament: A case report.

In children, most of the avulsion fractures of the anterior cruciate ligament occur at the tibial eminence. However, femoral-sided avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament is a very rare disease. Methods to manage such injuries remain unestablished. We have presented here the case of a 10-year-old boy with a femoral-sided avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament. X-ray and computed tomography scans revealed a free fragment in the knee cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee with a dislocated fragment. With the assistance

Complete Functional Recovery of a Feline with Extensive Facial Injuries Following a Traffic Accident.

This report examines the successful recovery of a feline that presented with multiple complex fractures and dislocations involving the facial and cranial structures resulting from a traffic accident. Diagnostic CT imaging identified significant injuries, including luxation of the left temporomandibular joint (TMJ), a mandibular symphyseal fracture, a hard palate fracture, and a left orbital fracture accompanied by severe exudate within the nasal cavity, compressing the left orbit and nasal passages. Importantly, no additional injuries were detected in the thoracic or abdominal regions, facilit

Scaphoid nonunion treated with vascular bone grafts pedicled on the dorsal supra-retinacular artery of the distal radius.

BACKGROUND: Nonunion and avascular necrosis (AVN) are frequent complications of scaphoid fractures. We describe the operative technique and … tomatic scaphoid nonunion involving AVN of the proximal fragment (one with perilunate transscaphoid fracture dislocation and 10 with displaced scaphoid fractures with nonunion). Nine of these 11 patients received fixation with divergent K-wires fixation and two received Herbert screws fixation. RESULTS: Osseous union was achieved in all 11 patients treated with VBGs …

Operative treatment of displaced fractures of the acetabulum. A meta-analysis.

Over the past 40 years, the management of displaced fractures of the acetabulum has changed from conservative to operative. We have undertaken a meta-analysis to evaluate the classification, the incidence of complications and the functional outcome of patients who had undergone operative treatment of such injuries. We analysed a total of 3670 fractures. The most common long-term complication was osteoarthritis which occurred in approximately 20% of the patients. Other late complications, including heterotopic ossification and avascular necrosis of the femoral head, were present in less than 10

Functional cast immobilization of thumb metacarpophalangeal joint injuries.

A prospective study was performed on 40 patients who were treated with a modified thumb spica cast (MTSC) for injuries involving the region of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb. Twenty-seven of these injuries occurred during sports participation. The immobilization consisted of a fiberglass cast which incorporated the thumb in a balanced position and allowed full flexion and extension of the wrist. Twenty patients had injuries involving the ulnar collateral ligament (five surgical). Three patients had radial collateral ligament injuries (two surgical). Fourteen patients had fractures

Case Report: Xsens motion analysis and virtual reality-based rehabilitation in a national-level badminton player following MPFL reinjury leading to postoperative patellar fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent patellar dislocation presents a significant rehabilitation challenge, particularly in athletes engaged in high-demand, multi-directional sports such as badminton. This case report describes a complex presentation in a state-level athlete with multiple patellar dislocations, followed by medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction and a subsequent comminuted patellar fracture. The case was further complicated by proprioceptive deficits, extension lag, sensory changes, and kinesiophobia, all of which limited the athlete's functional performance and return to sport

Arthroscopic Lateral Collateral Ligament Repair.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ulnar collateral ligament injury following unstable elbow dislocation can induce posterolateral rotatory instability that requires surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of arthroscopic repair of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) complex in an unstable elbow joint. METHODS: The study group consisted of 13 patients who experienced posterolateral rotatory instability after an unstable elbow dislocation with an injury to the lateral ulnar collateral ligament. The diagnosis was confirmed with computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (

An intraoperative small distractor for non-open reduction and intramedullary fixation of pediatric displaced diaphyseal forearm fractures.

This report describes technical tools for the treatment of pediatric displaced and unstable diaphyseal forearm fractures, which are difficult to treat by manual closed reduction. During intramedullary fixation with Kirchner wires, we propose our original small distractor as an intraoperative distraction apparatus without open reduction. This apparatus is made using parts of the Ilizarov external fixator. Apart from general external fixation devices, our apparatus is adequate for the effective shortening and lateral dislocation of the fracture site. This adequacy is not only because of the thre

Early diagnostics of temporomandibular joint structural elements injures caused by traumatic mandibular bone fractures.

A rapidly increasing number of mandibular condylar fractures and some complications related to injuries of temporomandibular elements make this study important. Intra-articular disorders lead to secondary pathological findings such as osteoarthritis, deforming osteoarthrosis, and temporomandibular joint ankylosis that limits mouth opening, mastication, swallowing, breathing, and decreased/lost working capacity or disability. Early diagnosis of intra-articular disorders can prevent from long-lasting functional complications caused by temporomandibular joint injuries. This study was performed fo

Internal fixation compared with total hip replacement for displaced femoral neck fractures: a minimum fifteen-year follow-up study of a previously reported randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Prospective randomized studies comparing internal fixation and a cemented hip replacement in the treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures have shown favorable short-term results for prosthetic replacement. The present report compares the results after a minimum of fifteen years. METHODS: From 1994 to 1998, 143 patients (146 hips) were randomized to closed reduction and internal fixation with two screws (n = 78) or a cemented total hip replacement (n = 68). The average age of the patients was eighty-four years (range, seventy-five to 101 years), and 38% were classified as ment

Secondary displacement in distal forearm fractures in children: adequate positioning of the wrist in the cast is more important than cast index.

The objective of this study was to assess whether the positioning of the wrist joint in the cast in such a manner that it counteracts the direction of angulation of fragments is more important than the cast index in the prevention of secondary displacements in distal forearm fractures. A retrospective review of all pediatric patients (0-16 years of age) who were hospitalized in our institution with displaced fractures of the distal forearm (either isolated fractures of the distal radius or both bone fractures) who underwent subsequent closed reduction and splinting in the period from August 20

Complications after talus fractures: A trauma centre experience.

BACKGROUND: Talus fractures are anatomically complex, high-energy injuries that can be associated with poor outcomes and high complication rates. Complications include non-union, avascular necrosis (AVN) and post-traumatic osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this study was to analyse the outcomes of these injuries in a large series. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data on 100 consecutive patients presenting to a single high volume major trauma centre with a talus fracture between March 2012 and March 2020. All patients were over the age of 18 with a minimum of 12 months follow up post injur

Feasibility and Radiological Outcome of Minimally Invasive Locked Plating of Proximal Humeral Fractures in Geriatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures are common injuries in the elderly. Locked plating showed high complication and reoperation rates at first. However, with second-generation implants and augmentation, minimally invasive locked plating might be a viable alternative to arthroplasty or conservative treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for all patients with proximal humerus fractures treated between 2014 and 2020 with locked plating. All patients over 60 years of age who underwent surgery for a proximal humerus fracture with plate osteosynthesis (NCB, P

Short and midterm results of reverse shoulder arthroplasty according to the preoperative etiology.

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has shown promising results for cuff tear arthropathy but the indication has been extended to fracture sequelae and revision shoulder arthroplasty with different preconditions. Further, the clinical relevance of inferior scapular notching for different etiologies is uncertain. Our hypothesis was that preoperative etiology as well as the occurrence of scapular notching would significantly influence the clinical outcome. METHODS: We reviewed 76 reverse shoulder arthroplasties for cuff tear arthropathy (45 patients), fracture sequelae (10 patients)

Efficacy of a novel cervical dislocation tool for humane euthanasia of broilers and broiler breeders.

Euthanasia is an essential task performed daily on commercial poultry farms around the world to safeguard animal welfare. Manual cervical dislocation (MCD) is the most common euthanasia method but can be challenging to perform given the physical strength required to implement this technique. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a novel cervical dislocation tool (NCDT) compared to MCD. A total of 60 Ross 308 chickens (6-wk old) and 60 Ross 706 parent stock breeders (21-wk old) were enrolled in the study. Birds were sexed, blocked by body weight, and allocated t
