Facial Nerve Supply to the Orbicularis Oculi around the Lower Eyelid: Anatomy and Its Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: The motor innervation of the lower orbicularis oculi has not been clearly established. There is a discrepancy between anatomical descriptions and clinical outcomes of the motor innervation of the pretarsal orbicularis oculi muscle. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to identify every motor and sensory nerve of the lower eyelid, and to reveal the detailed motor nerve pathways toward the medial canthal area. METHODS: Fresh cadaver dissections were performed on 50 hemifaces under a surgical microscope. Submuscular and intramuscular nerves of the lower eyelid were identified,

Upper full arch rehabilitation with sinus by-pass with tilted implants via tapered-threaded expanders in low density bone: a clinical trial.

PURPOSE: In the present paper the use of tapered-screw bone expanders (TSBEs) is proposed, in combination with the placement of tilted implants, in close proximity to the anterior sinus wall, solving the problem of the reduced height of the alveolar bone in the sub-antral area. The Authors present a case series of full-arch rehabilitations performed with this procedure named: Tilted Implant Expansion Osteotomy (TIEO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 12 patients (5 males and 7 females, average age 58.5 ± 8.1 years) with totally or partially edentulous maxilla were enrolled in this study. For each patie

An Integrative Therapeutic Concept for Surgical Treatment of Severe Cases of Lymphedema of the Lower Extremity.

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema results from insufficient lymphatic drainage and typically affects the extremities. Recent studies revealed obesity as another cause of extremity lymphedema. Conservative treatment of patients with elephantiastic lymphedema of the lower extremity is limited and often inadequate. Resecting surgery plays an important role in these cases. Here, we investigated the effects of an integrated therapy concept on outcome and complication rates. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical outcome of 26 patients with elephantiastic lymphedema of the lower limb who underwent

Neurodevelopmental Outcome at 2 Years of Age according to Patent Ductus Arteriosus Management in Very Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a condition frequently found in very preterm infants, and its treatment remains a subject of debate. Furthermore, there are only a few studies available that have examined the impact of these treatments on the neurological outcome of the patient. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcome of PDA treatment on preterm infants born between 24+0 and 28+6 weeks of gestation. METHODS: We conducted an observational multicentric cohort study (LIFT Cohort). We compared three groups of patients according to their PDA treatment strategy: medical

Functional morphology and kinematics of terrestrial feeding in the largescale foureyes (Anableps anableps).

A major challenge for aquatic vertebrates that invade land is feeding in the terrestrial realm. The capacity of the gape to become parallel with the ground has been shown to be a key factor to allow fishes to feed on prey lying on a terrestrial surface. To do so, two strategies have been identified that involve a nose-down tilting of the head: (1) by pivoting on the pectoral fins as observed in mudskippers, and (2) curling of the anterior part of the body supported by a long and flexible eel-like body as shown in eel-catfish. Although Anableps anableps successfully feeds on land, it does not p

A novel device for studying weight supported, quadrupedal overground locomotion in spinal cord injured rats.

BACKGROUND: Providing weight support facilitates locomotion in spinal cord injured animals. To control weight support, robotic systems have been developed for treadmill stepping and more recently for overground walking. NEW METHOD: We developed a novel device, the body weight supported ambulatory rodent trainer (i.e. BART). It has a small pneumatic cylinder that moves along a linear track above the rat. When air is supplied to the cylinder, the rats are lifted as they perform overground walking. We tested the BART device in rats that received a moderate spinal cord contusion injury and in nor

Arm movements induced by electrical microstimulation in the superior colliculus of the macaque monkey.

Neuronal activity in the deep layers of the macaque (Macaca mulatta) superior colliculus (SC) and the underlying reticular formation is correlated with the initiation and execution of arm movements (Werner, 1993). Although the correlation of this activity with EMGs of proximal arm muscles is as strong as in motor cortex (Werner et al., 1997a; Stuphorn et al., 1999), little is known about the influence of electrical microstimulation in the SC on the initiation and trajectories of arm movements. Our experiments on three macaque monkeys clearly show that arm movements can be elicited by electrica

Upper extremity kinematics and kinetics during the performance of a stationary wheelie in manual wheelchair users with a spinal cord injury.

No comprehensive biomechanical study has documented upper extremity (U/E) kinematics and kinetics during the performance of wheelchair wheelies among manual wheelchair users (MWUs). The aim of this study was to describe movement strategies (kinematics), mechanical loads (kinetics), and power at the nondominant U/E joints during a wheelie among MWUs with spinal cord injury (SCI). During a laboratory assessment, 16 MWUs with SCI completed four wheelie trials on a rigid surface. Each participant's wheelchair was equipped with instrumented wheels to record handrim kinetics, while U/E and wheelchai

Aerodynamic characteristics of a feathered dinosaur measured using physical models. Effects of form on static stability and control effectiveness.

We report the effects of posture and morphology on the static aerodynamic stability and control effectiveness of physical models based on the feathered dinosaur, [Formula: see text]Microraptor gui, from the Cretaceous of China. Postures had similar lift and drag coefficients and were broadly similar when simplified metrics of gliding were considered, but they exhibited different stability characteristics depending on the position of the legs and the presence of feathers on the legs and the tail. Both stability and the function of appendages in generating maneuvering forces and torques changed

Bone Formation Under the Elevated Sinus Membrane Using Venous Coagulum.

INTRODUCTION: Insufficient bone height is a common obstacle to placing dental implants in the posterior maxilla. Sinus grafts have been shown to be a highly predictable way to increase bone height in the posterior maxilla. This case series illustrates a technique using venous coagulum and simultaneous implant placement under the elevated sinus. Bone formation is demonstrated clinically, radiographically, and histologically. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of histomorphometric results and microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) using this technique. CASE SERIES: A total of f
