The frequency of haemoglobinopathies among the Hong Kong Chinese newborn was examined by screening 932 consecutive cord blood samples by electrophoresis. The findings indicate that 49 (5.2%) had electrophoretic abnormalities, of which 39 (4.2%) demonstrated the presence of Hb Bart's. 14 of these 39 babies were re-investigated after 1 year and all were proven to carry the alpha-thalassaemia gene. During the years 1936 through 1978, 60 cases received surgical intervention for alveolar echinococcosis of the liver. The resectability and operative mortality rate were 64.0% (16/25) and 43.8% (7/16) before 1968, but 54.3% (19/35) and zero (0/19) thereafter. Can the diagnosis of sleeping sickness in patients immunologically suspect, without seeing the parasite, be obtained by dosing IgG and IgM? The authors demonstrate that two groups of people with positive immunodiagnosis, one parasitologically confirmed and the other not confirmed, do not show significant difference when dosing immunoglobulins. These two groups respectively show a significant difference when compared with a parasitologically and immunologicaly negative group. The simultaneous increase in IgG and IgM might confirm the immunodiagnosis.

After four years of annual screening 10,566 women, physical examination (PE) by nurse clinicians is as effective in detecting suspect cases as is the examination of surgeons and the general medical community of Cincinnati. Carefully performed physical examination has found 45% of the extant cancers detected. Twenty-eight percent of the cancers detected by PE were minimal lesions. One-third of all the minimal cancers currently detectable were discovered by PE.

An analysis of visual defects among 310 children referred from a vision screening of 2 178 7-year-old children revealed a 50% frequency of significant eye defects among the referrals (7% of screened children). Of the screened children, one group (1 530 children) had previous visual screening three years earlier. The other group (648 children) had no previous vision screening until the age of seven. A comparison between the two groups showed that the risk of finding a new significant eye disorder in a school entrant was more than 6 times greater for a child who was not examined in his preschool

The varied presentation and clinical features of classical galactosaemia are illustrated by the case histories of seven babies born in Western Australia since January, 1962, and of two babies born in South Australia in whom diagnosis was made as a result of adding galactosaemia to the Guthrie screening programme in October, 1974. By recording the electrocardiogram and phonocardiogram simultaneously using three abbreviated leads, 23,216 (6 and 7 years of age) elementary school children were screened for heart diseases. In a regional study 2062 newborns were screened for congenital hypothyroidism by determination of TSH in plasma or dried blood spots on the fifth day of life. Three newborns with congenital hypothyroidism were detected. All of them showed high TSH-levels between 462 and 2192 micromicron/ml. The prevalence of presumed vitamin A-related corneal scars among 5,589 preschool-age Haitian children ranged from 1.2 per 1,000 in the south, to almost 1% in the famine-afflicted north.
