Prediction of menstrual literacy among female university students using tree-based machine learning algorithms: A cross-sectional study in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual literacy is crucial for safeguarding the health, dignity, and rights of women. However, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), such as Bangladesh, it remains an overlooked issue. Female university students, positioned at a pivotal developmental stage, require accurate and comprehensive knowledge about menstruation. Despite overall improvements in education, significant gaps persist in menstrual knowledge and hygiene practices among this group. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to predict menstrual literacy levels among female university students in Bangladesh using tree…

Age and serum anti-Müllerian hormone levels as predictors of time to return of menses after chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT: Chemotherapeutic agents result in the loss of growing follicles, which can manifest as amenorrhoea. Alkylating chemotherapy (AC) is known to be more gonadotoxic than non-alkylating chemotherapy (NAC). Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), an indirect marker of ovarian reserve, and age have been investigated as predictors of ovarian function after chemotherapy; however, little is known about the time to return of menses. This study aimed to assess how patient age and baseline serum AMH levels at cancer diagnosis affect the time to return of menses post-chemotherapy. This retrospective cohort

Environmental microbiota from substrate may interfere with microbiome-based identification of forensically relevant body fluids: A pilot study.

The microbiome is a promising tool for identifying body fluids which can be deposited on various substrates at a crime scene. Body fluids collected from crime scenes are not entirely free from substrate microbes whose effects on the microbiome-based identification of body fluids are not well understood. In this study, five body fluids (peripheral blood, menstrual blood, nasal secretions, saliva, and semen) were deposited on sterile swabs, bedspreads, and floors under indoor exposure conditions for 7 days. The microbial communities in the samples were characterized using amplicon sequencing tar

Seeking menstrual products: a qualitative exploration of the unmet menstrual needs of individuals experiencing homelessness in New York City.

BACKGROUND: There has been increasing recognition that certain vulnerable populations in the United States of America struggle to meet their menstruation-related needs, including people experiencing homelessness. Media and policy attention on this subject has focused on the provision of free menstrual products to vulnerable populations, including a New York City legislative bill, which guarantees access to menstrual products for Department of Homeless Services shelter residents (Intros 1123-A). METHODS: This qualitative study explored the challenges people experiencing homelessness in New Yor…

Associations Between Dysmenorrhea Symptom-Based Phenotypes and Vaginal Microbiome: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhea is highly prevalent; it places women at risk for other chronic pain conditions. There is a high degree of individual variability in menstrual pain severity, the number of painful sites, and co-occurring gastrointestinal symptoms. Distinct dysmenorrhea symptom-based phenotypes were previously identified, but the biological underpinnings of these phenotypes are less known. One underexplored contributor is the vaginal microbiome. The vaginal microbiota differs significantly among reproductive-age women and may modulate as well as amplify reproductive tract inflammation, w

Menstrual Blood-Derived Endometrial Stem Cells' Impact for the Treatment Perspective of Female Infertility.

When looking for the causes and treatments of infertility, much attention is paid to one of the reproductive tissues-the endometrium. Therefore, endometrial stem cells are an attractive target for infertility studies in women of unexplained origin. Menstrual blood stem cells (MenSCs) are morphologically and functionally similar to cells derived directly from the endometrium; with dual expression of mesenchymal and embryonic cell markers, they proliferate and regenerate better than bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. In addition, menstrual blood stem cells are extracted in a non-invasive and pa

Endocrine Effects of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport.

The term Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport was introduced by the International Olympic Committee in 2014. It refers to the potential health and performance consequences of inadequate energy for sport, emphasizing that there are consequences of low energy availability (EA; typically defined as <30 kcal·kg-1 fat-free mass·day-1) beyond the important and well-established female athlete triad, and that low EA affects populations other than women. As the prevalence and consequences of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport become more apparent, it is important to understand the current knowledge of

Fertility, Contraception, and Novel Reproductive Technologies in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis function, leading to menstrual abnormalities, sexual dysfunction, functional menopause, and loss of fertility. Pregnancy in a patient with CKD is associated with a higher risk of complications to both the mother and the fetus, highlighting the importance of contraceptive counseling at all stages of CKD. There has been limited research on the safety and efficacy of different contraceptive methods in the CKD population, and it is important to tailor the choice of contraception to the patient's lifestyle and comorbidity stat

Three-step method for menstrual and oral contraceptive cycle verification.

OBJECTIVES: Fluctuating endogenous and exogenous ovarian hormones may influence exercise parameters; yet control and verification of ovarian hormone status is rarely reported and limits current exercise science and sports medicine research. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an individualised three-step method in identifying the mid-luteal or high hormone phase in endogenous and exogenous hormone cycles in recreationally-active women and determine hormone and demographic characteristics associated with unsuccessful classification. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study des
