Transcriptome changes in overweight neutered female dogs undergoing a weight loss program with or without Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a well-known concern in pets that often poses challenges in terms of successful maintenance of weight loss after different types of interventions. Nutraceuticals could represent a promising strategy to handle this disease. Among them, Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina) is reported to have beneficial effects in obese dogs, rodents, and humans, possibly due to the richness in several bioactive compounds. In this perspective, omics techniques could be useful tools to unravel both the mechanisms behind obesity, possible unsuccessful clinical outcomes, and the beneficial effec

Role of neutropenic diet in prevention of infection and graft-versus-host disease in haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients: systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is associated with substantial early infectious risk, neutropenia, immunosuppression, and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Many centres continue to use neutropenic, low-microbial, low-bacterial, or protective diets to reduce dietary exposure to potential pathogens, despite variation in diet definitions and concerns regarding nutritional intake, patient experience, cost, and microbiota recovery. This protocol describes a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the benefits and harms of neutropenic diets compared with less res

Maternal Folic Acid, B12, and Zinc Serum Levels and Risk of Orofacial Cleft in Offspring in Tabriz.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are prevalent congenital malformations affecting approximately 1 in 700 live births. The etiology of OFCs is multifactorial, encompassing both genetic predispositions and environmental factors, with maternal nutritional status, particularly folic acid, vitamin B12, and zinc levels, playing a crucial role in fetal development. This study investigates the association between maternal serum micronutrient levels and the risk of OFCs in Tabriz. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted over six months at the Children's Hospital of Tabriz University of Medical

Trace element with cytokine interactions reveal a magnesium interaction with inflammation-insulin-like growth factor 1 axis in neural tube defects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are severe congenital malformations with complex genetic, nutritional, and environmental causes. Beyond folate deficiency, the role of micronutrient imbalance, inflammation, and growth signaling remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate demographic characteristics, maternal and child serum trace elements, inflammatory markers, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in relation to NTD risk. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on 342 participants, comprising children with NTDs and their mothers, along with matched healthy controls. S

Severe Iron Deficiency Anemia and Growth Faltering Associated With Excessive Cow's Milk Intake and Possible Celiac Disease in Indian Children: A Case Series.

Cow's milk is widely considered a fundamental component of early childhood nutrition in India and frequently represents the primary daily beverage for toddlers. However, cow's milk contains minimal bioavailable iron and may inhibit intestinal iron absorption, thereby increasing the risk of iron deficiency. Iron deficiency remains the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency in India and is the leading cause of anemia among young children. Despite national nutrition initiatives, anemia prevalence in this age group continues to be substantial, largely driven by inadequate dietary iron intake, pro

Dietary intake and nutritional status in multiple sclerosis and associations with disease phenotype and management: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition and diet are increasingly recognised as potential modulators of immune function in multiple sclerosis (MS), but human studies remain conflicting and often focus on single nutrients. We aimed to investigate dietary intake in people with MS versus matched controls and to examine associations between dietary components, phenotype, disability, severity, and disease‑modifying therapy (DMT) status. METHODS: In this cross-sectional case-control study, 270 adults with clinically confirmed MS and 255 originally age-matched controls completed a validated food-frequency questionnai

Effects of Increasing CO2 Concentration on Crop Growth and Soil Ammonia-Oxidizing Microorganisms in a Fababean (Vicia faba L.) and Wheat (Triticum aestivum Yunmai) Intercropping System.

Elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2) levels can enhance crop yields but may simultaneously reduce quality, impacting both macronutrient and micronutrient concentrations, and potentially decreasing protein content in cereal grains. This study examined the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and nitrogen (N) fertilization on crop growth, yield, and soil nitrogen cycling through a glass greenhouse experiment using Eutric Regosol soil. The experimental design incorporated two CO2 gradients: ambient CO2 (aCO2) at approximately 410 ppm during the day and 460 ppm at night, and eCO2 at approximately 550 ppm duri

Glucose Homeostasis, Metabolomics, and Pregnancy Outcomes After Bariatric Surgery (GLORIA): Protocol for a Multicentre Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: Metabolic bariatric surgery is a highly effective and long-lasting treatment for obesity and related chronic conditions. Women of reproductive age represent the largest group undergoing these procedures. Observational studies suggest an increased risk of preterm birth and impaired foetal growth in this population, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. A key hypothesis is that altered glucose metabolism, characterised by frequent hypoglycaemia and glycaemic fluctuations, may contribute to these adverse outcomes. While glycaemic variability following metabolic bariatric su
