The predictive validity of safety climate.

PROBLEM: Safety professionals have increasingly turned their attention to social science for insight into the causation of industrial accidents. One social construct, safety climate, has been examined by several researchers [Cooper, M. D., & Phillips, R. A. (2004). Exploratory analysis of the safety climate and safety behavior relationship. Journal of Safety Research, 35(5), 497-512; Gillen, M., Baltz, D., Gassel, M., Kirsch, L., & Vacarro, D. (2002). The impacts of achievement goal orientation, dark triad, person-environment misfit, and perceived psychological safety on external hires' deviant behaviors.

Many organizations are unable to leverage the benefits of external hires due to the latter's deviant behaviors. Drawing on person-environment fit and trait activation theories alongside goal orientation and dark triad personality research, we hypothesized and tested a conceptual model elucidating the mechanisms underlying deviant behaviors in this unique context. Our study, based on data from 236 external hires and their supervisors, reveals that these hires exhibit deviant behaviors when they experience a misalignment between their personal traits and the organizational environment. In partic

A State-Wide Initiative to Improve Health System Responses to People With Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms in Crisis: A Retrospective Audit.

Gold Card SA is a four-session structured psychological intervention offered soon after an acute crisis presentation to people with symptoms characteristic of borderline personality disorder. This study describes individual and system-level outcomes from a large-scale health-care improvement initiative to implement Gold Card SA across South Australia. An uncontrolled pre-post study design was utilized examining service user (n = 332) patient-reported outcome measures and hospital service utilization records (6 months before and after Gold Card SA). Mixed-effects negative binomial regression an

Somatic Problems in Children Disclosing Sexual Abuse: The Mediating Role of Alexithymia and Dissociation.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is linked to heightened levels of medically unexplained symptoms. Research indicates that victims of CSA display alexithymia and dissociation symptoms. Alexithymia and dissociation may potentially contribute to developing somatic complaints in CSA victims. They represent mechanisms through which psychological distress is avoided and could then manifest as physical symptoms like somatic problems (e.g. headaches, nausea, stomachache, etc.). This study aimed to investigate if alexithymia and dissociation are mechanisms explaining the link between CSA and somatic complaint

Comparing Effects of Caffeine and Theobromine on Adrenal Hypertrophy and Social Behavior in Psychosocial Stressed Mice.

Management of chronic psychological stress is important for the prevention of depression, mood disorders, and other related ailments. Recent studies have shown that dietary methylxanthines, such as caffeine and theobromine, exert preventive effects on these ailments. Although the psychological effects of caffeine are well-investigated, those of theobromine are not fully understood. In the present study, the effects of theobromine were evaluated and compared with those of caffeine using a mouse stress model based on confrontational housing. Male mice were kept separately in partition cages (two

Novel ketamine and zinc treatment for anorexia nervosa and the potential beneficial interactions with the gut microbiome.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe illness with diverse aetiological and maintaining contributors including neurobiological, metabolic, psychological, and social determining factors. In addition to nutritional recovery, multiple psychological and pharmacological therapies and brain-based stimulations have been explored; however, existing treatments have limited efficacy. This paper outlines a neurobiological model of glutamatergic and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic dysfunction, exacerbated by chronic gut microbiome dysbiosis and zinc depletion at a brain and gut level. The gut microbiome is e

Educational needs of patients, families, and healthcare professionals to support the patient journey in haemophilia gene therapy in the UK.

With the first gene therapies for haemophilia approved by the European Commission, the US Food and Drug Administration, and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, it is important to consider the remaining unmet needs and challenges that may arise throughout patients' treatment journeys. We discuss existing unmet needs and important considerations prior to, during, and following haemophilia gene therapy treatment in the UK, and propose potential next steps. Key areas for attention are education, psychological support, and guidance on implementation. Strategies are urgently req

What has the new 11th revision of International Classification of Diseases classification brought in the categorization of female sexual dysfunctions?

In January 2022, the classification of female sexual dysfunctions under the new eleventh revision of International Classification of Diseases came into force. Its definitive integration into practice is expected after a 5-year transition period. The new nomenclature is based on a circular model of female sexual activity, eliminating the Cartesian-dualistic concept of separating individual pathophysiological entities with „non-organic“ and „organic“ etiology. Sexual dysfunctions are evaluated as a complex interaction of psychological, interpersonal, social, cultural, physiological, and by gende

The "Biology-First" Hypothesis: Functional disorders may begin and end with biology-A scoping review.

While it is generally accepted that gastrointestinal infections can cause functional disturbances in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract-known as postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS) and functional dyspepsia (PI-FD)-it has still not been widely recognized that such an infection can also initiate functional non-intestinal diseases, and that non-intestinal infections can provoke both intestinal and non-intestinal functional disturbances. We conducted a scoping review of the respective literature and-on the basis of these data-hypothesize that medically unexplained functional s

Use of tramadol in psychiatric care: A comprehensive review and report of two cases.

Tramadol is widely prescribed for treating acute and chronic forms of pain. It is a weak mu-receptor opioid agonist and also increases concentrations of serotonin and noradrenaline within the limbic system of the brain. The therapeutic range of tramadol is relatively wide. Compared with other opioid agonists, there is little risk for developing tolerance and for abuse. Recent models of depression emphasise the subjective experience of a depressive mood as being, in part, a psychologically painful state. It is well established that psychological stress due to social separation/loss, disruption

Culture and Comorbidity: Intimate Partner Violence as a Common Risk Factor for Maternal Mental Illness and Reproductive Health Problems among Former Child Soldiers in Nepal.

Our objective was to elucidate how culture influences internal (psychological), external (social), institutional (structural), and health care (medical) processes, which, taken together, create differential risk of comorbidity across contexts. To develop a conceptual model, we conducted qualitative research with 13 female child soldiers in Nepal. Participants gave open-ended responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) vignettes (marital rape, emotional abuse, violence during pregnancy). Twelve participants (92%) endorsed personal responses (remaining silent, enduring violence, forgiving the h

Child sexual abuse: Raising awareness and empathy is essential to promote new public health responses.

Child sexual abuse is a major global public health concern, affecting one in eight children and causing massive costs including depression, unwanted pregnancy, and HIV. The gravity of this global issue is reflected by the United Nations' new effort to respond to sexual abuse in the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. The fundamental policy aims are to improve prevention, identification, and optimal responses to sexual abuse. As shown in our literature review, policymakers face difficult challenges because child sexual abuse is hidden, psychologically complex, and socially sensitive. This artic

Political skill: A proactive inhibitor of workplace aggression exposure and an active buffer of the aggression-strain relationship.

In the current study we examined the role of 4 dimensions of political skill (social astuteness, interpersonal influence, networking ability, and apparent sincerity) in predicting subsequent workplace aggression exposure based on the proactive coping framework. Further, we investigated their buffering effects on the negative outcomes of experienced workplace aggression based on the transactional stress model. Data were collected from nurses at 3 time points: before graduation (Time 1, n = 346), approximately 6 months after graduation (Time 2, n = 214), and approximately 12 months after graduat

A bus stop shelter evaluated from the user's perspective.

This study aims to evaluate the current bus stop shelter model used in Florianópolis, Brazil, through a functional analysis--focused in the relationship between the shelter, the users and their activities--and also to analyse users' perceptions. The methodology consisted of exploratory visits, anthropometric analysis, observation and interviews. The exploratory visit intended to survey the physical characteristics of the shelter (dimensions, materials, colors, displayed information) and its position on the sidewalk. The anthropometric analysis was made to verify whether the dimensions of the s

Psychological treatment dropout among pathological gamblers.

Premature dropout from treatments for pathological gambling is potentially of significant importance, if it occurs before substantial progress has been made in addressing the problem. A systematic review of current research on dropout from psychological treatments for pathological gambling identified 12 studies from five countries. Dropout ranged from 14% to 50%, with a median of dropout 26%. Overall, 31% of the participants dropped out of treatment. Few studies distinguish between dropouts at different stages of participation. The evidence on specific variables that predict dropout is limited

A group therapy approach to facilitate integration of risk information for women at risk for breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and illustrate elements of a group counselling approach designed to enhance the communication of risk information on breast cancer (BC) to women with a family history of this disease. Breast cancer is a leading cause of female cancer death. The most important risk factor for BC is a positive family history in at least 1 first-degree relative, and approximately one-third of women with BC have a family history of the disease. Recent evidence suggests that there is a significant psychological impact associated with having a family history of BC, and this may influence the p

Fairbairn's Rationale for Excluding Good Objects from the Unconscious: Clinical Implications.

W. R. D. Fairbairn developed a unique metapsychology that began as controversial but eventually transformed the trajectory of psychoanalytic ideas by emphasizing the innate need for real relationships. His conception of the unconscious differs from Freud's and provides the foundation upon which he elaborated a new model of the mind. Fairbairn describes the first object relations theory by linking a part of the self to unconscious bad objects. While many clinicians have been hesitant to accept his proposition that good objects do not become part of the dynamic unconscious, it is argued that thi

The psychological mechanisms of older adults being defrauded by healthcare products: a mixed methods research study.

The current study seeks to investigate the psychological mechanisms that lead older adults to fall victim to healthcare product scams. Initially, we conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with with victims and used grounded theory coding to develop a theoretical model. Subsequently, we applied structural equation modeling to validate and refine this theoretical model, which demonstrated a good fit. Our findings indicate that older adults' perceptions of cognitive aging, health status, health anxiety, and loneliness influence irrational consumption tendencies, including impulsive experi
