BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Transcranial sonography-based grading of Parkinson's Disease has gained increasing attention in recent years, and it is currently used for assistive differential diagnosis in some specialized centers. To this end, accurate midbrain segmentation is considered an important initial step. However, current practice is manual, time-consuming, and bias-prone due to the subjective nature. Relevant studies in the literature are scarce and lacks comprehensive model evaluations from application perspectives. Herein, we aimed to benchmark the best-performing U-Net model for objec

Manual segmentation poses a time-consuming challenge for disease quantification, therapy evaluation, treatment planning, and outcome prediction. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) hold promise in accurately identifying tumor locations and boundaries in PET scans. However, a major hurdle is the extensive amount of supervised and annotated data necessary for training. To overcome this limitation, this study explores semi-supervised approaches utilizing unlabeled data, specifically focusing on PET images of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMB

Dynamic 2-[18F] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (dFDG-PET) for human brain imaging has considerable clinical potential, yet its utilization remains limited. A key challenge in the quantitative analysis of dFDG-PET is characterizing a patient-specific blood input function, traditionally reliant on invasive arterial blood sampling. This research introduces a novel approach employing non-invasive deep learning model-based computations from the internal carotid arteries (ICA) with partial volume (PV) corrections, thereby eliminating the need for invasive arterial sampling. We

PURPOSE: Radical surgery is the primary treatment for early-stage resectable lung cancer, yet recurrence after curative surgery is not uncommon. Identifying patients at high risk of recurrence using preoperative computed tomography (CT) images could enable more aggressive surgical approaches, shorter surveillance intervals, and intensified adjuvant treatments. This study aims to analyze lung cancer sites in CT images to predict potential recurrences in high-risk individuals.
METHODS: We retrieved anonymized imaging and clinical data from an institutional database, focusing on patients who und

OBJECTIVE: Despite the prevalent use of the general linear model (GLM) in fMRI data analysis, assuming a pre-defined hemodynamic response function (HRF) for all voxels can lead to reduced reliability and may distort the inferences derived from it. To overcome the necessity of presuming a specific model for the hemodynamic response, we introduce a semi-supervised automatic detection (SAD) method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The proposed SAD method employs a Bi-LSTM neural network to classify high temporal resolution fMRI data. Network training utilized an fMRI dataset with 75-ms temporal resolution

Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) events in newborns can trigger seizures, which are highly associated with later neurodevelopmental impairment. The precise detection of these seizures is a complex task requiring considerable very specialized expertise, underscoring the necessity for automated methods to support diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. We have previously shown the effectiveness of deep-learning algorithms, involving a 17-layer deep convolutional neural network (CNN), to identify and quantify post-HI high-amplitude seizures (HAS) in preterm fetal sheep models. This method, which incorporat

Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients frequently transition between the 'ON' state, where medication is effective, and the 'OFF' state, affecting their quality of life. Monitoring these transitions is vital for personalized therapy. We introduced a framework based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) to detect transitions between medication states by learning from continuous movement data. Unlike traditional approaches that typically identify each state based on static data patterns, our approach focuses on understanding the dynamic patterns of change throughout the transitions, providing a more general

Currently, countries across the world are suffering from a prominent viral infection called COVID-19. Most countries are still facing several issues due to this disease, which has resulted in several fatalities. The first COVID-19 wave caused devastation across the world owing to its virulence and led to a massive loss in human lives, impacting the country's economy drastically. A dangerous disease called mucormycosis was discovered worldwide during the second COVID-19 wave, in 2021, which lasted from April to July. The mucormycosis disease is commonly known as "black fungus," which belongs to

Viruses represent one of the greatest threats to human health, necessitating the development of new antiviral drug candidates. Antiviral peptides often possess excellent biological activity and a favourable toxicity profile, and therefore represent a promising field of novel antiviral drugs. As the quantity of sequencing data grows annually, the development of an accurate in silico method for the prediction of peptide antiviral activities is important. This study leverages advances in deep learning and cheminformatics to produce a novel sequence-based deep neural network classifier for the pre

Improving adverse drug event (ADE) prediction is highly critical in pharmacovigilance research. We propose a novel information component guided pharmacological network model (IC-PNM) to predict drug-ADE signals. This new method combines the pharmacological network model and information component, a Bayes statistics method. We use 33,947 drug-ADE pairs from the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) 2010 data as the training data, and the new 21,065 drug-ADE pairs from FAERS 2011-2015 as the validations samples. The IC-PNM data analysis suggests that both large and small sample size drug-AD

Early detection and appropriate medical treatment are of great use for ear disease. However, a new diagnostic strategy is necessary for the absence of experts and relatively low diagnostic accuracy, in which deep learning plays an important role. This paper puts forward a mechanic learning model which uses abundant otoscope image data gained in clinical cases to achieve an automatic diagnosis of ear diseases in real time. A total of 20,542 endoscopic images were employed to train nine common deep convolution neural networks. According to the characteristics of the eardrum and external auditory

Background Hyperpolarized noble gas MRI helps measure lung ventilation, but clinical translation remains limited. Free-breathing proton MRI may help quantify lung function using existing MRI systems without contrast material and may assist in providing information about ventilation not visible to the eye or easily extracted with segmentation methods. Purpose To explore the use of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) to generate synthetic MRI ventilation scans from free-breathing MRI (deep learning [DL] ventilation MRI)-derived specific ventilation maps as a surrogate of noble gas MRI and

High-resolution volume reconstruction from multiple motion-corrupted stacks of 2D slices plays an increasing role for fetal brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies. Currently existing reconstruction methods are time-consuming and often require user interactions to localize and extract the brain from several stacks of 2D slices. We propose a fully automatic framework for fetal brain reconstruction that consists of four stages: 1) fetal brain localization based on a coarse segmentation by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), 2) fine segmentation by another CNN trained with a multi-scale

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent difficulties including repetitive patterns of behavior known as stereotypical motor movements (SMM). So far, several techniques have been implemented to track and identify SMMs. In this context, we propose a deep learning approach for SMM recognition, namely, convolutional neural networks (CNN) in time and frequency-domains. To solve the intrasubject SMM variability, we propose a robust CNN model for SMM detection within subjects, whose parameters are set according to a proper analysis of SMM signals, t
