AIMS: This study developed and evaluated a mixed reality (MR) simulation program for dyspnoea care (D-MRSim) to enhance new nurses' competency.
BACKGROUND: Managing dyspnoea requires advanced skills, which many new nurses lack. Innovative training, such as MR simulation, may bridge this gap.
DESIGN: This study used a mixed-methods design combining a randomized controlled trial and focus group interviews (FGIs).
METHODS: A total of 59 new nurses at a university hospital in South Korea participated, with random assignment to the experimental (n = 30) or control group (n = 29). The experimenta

BACKGROUND: Jordan's population of older adults is growing due to improved health care and lifestyle, but the country has limited mental health care resources, causing challenges for the health care system. Reminiscence is a point of nursing intervention and a way for psychiatric nurses to help people improve their mental health by expanding their personal boundaries (self-transcendence).
AIMS: The study aimed to examine the mediating effects of self-transcendence on the relationship between reminiscence functions and death anxiety in a sample of Jordanian older adults. Psychiatric nurses can

INTRODUCTION: Patients with cancer are at high risk of developing pressure ulcers at the end of life as a result of their underlying condition or cancer treatment. There are many guidelines which set out best practice with regard to end-of-life skin care. However, the complexity of palliative cancer care often means that it is challenging for nurses to make the appropriate person-centred decisions about end-of-life skin care. This study seeks to explore the perceived importance that nurses place on different factors in their end-of-life skin care for patients with cancer. The utility, face val

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study explored the experiences of neonatal nurses with facilitating closeness between parents and babies with congenital abnormalities in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
BACKGROUND: Babies with congenital abnormalities often require admission to the neonatal intensive care unit. Parents may experience emotional distancing from their baby, due to their response to their baby's congenital abnormality, as well as physical separation due to their baby's hospitalisation in the NICU. NICU nurses can help facilitate the development of closeness between

PURPOSE: Pain management within emergency departments (ED) remains challenging. Given that unrelieved pain in children is linked to a number of negative physiological and psychological consequences, optimal management of children's pain is paramount. Many studies exploring children's pain have adopted quantitative methods or sought the perspectives of adults. Compared to adults, studies examining children's views on pain and pain management are limited. This study aimed to explore children's pain experiences, their perception of pain management and expectations of the role of the nurse.

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore psychiatric nurses' experiences and perspectives regarding patient participation. Patient participation is an ambiguous, complex and poorly defined concept with practical/clinical, organisational, legal and ethical aspects, some of which in psychiatric units may cause ethical predicaments and moral stress in nurses, for instance when moral caring acts are thwarted by constraints.
METHODS: An explorative quantitative pilot study was conducted at a psychiatric subacute unit through three focus group interviews with a total of nine participants. A themat

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a major healthcare concern. The 24-48 week treatment of pegylated interferon and ribavirin therapy requires a tremendous amount of commitment from patients and providers. Thus, there has been a huge focus on health-related quality of life and various measures to support patient adherence and completion of the recommended HCV treatment regimen. This quality improvement project aimed to develop and test a nurse-driven evidence-based pathway that supports the care of patients receiving hepatitis C medication therapy in a tertiary, academic hepatology practi

BACKGROUND/AIMS: An intramuscular (i.m.) injection into the buttock risks damaging the sciatic nerve. Safe injection practices need to be understood by doctors and nurses alike. The aims of this study were to determine if sciatic nerve injury because of i.m. injection is a continuing problem and to establish the availability of published guidelines on i.m. injection techniques.
METHODS: Intramuscular injection related sciatic nerve injury claims to the New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation between July 2005 and September 2008 were reviewed. Nursing organisations were surveyed to enqui

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the world's commonest hereditary disorders. Painful episodes are the overriding manifestation. SCD pain is largely opioid-sensitive and, in severe cases, adult patients warranting hospitalization often need parenteral opioids. Pain is essentially subjective and is often best controlled by patients themselves. This study looks at SCD patients' perceptions of self-administering parenteral opioids. Using a mainly multiple-choice questionnaire and a focus group interview, data were gathered from 40 adult SCD patients during hospitalization over a 4-month period.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether low-risk maternity patients in a nurse-midwifery service with prepregnant body mass index (BMI) above 29.0 are at increased risk for cesarean delivery.
METHODS: We studied 1881 women who delivered between 1994 and 1998 and were managed by an academic inner-city hospital-certified nurse-midwifery practice. We calculated prepregnancy BMI and weight gain during pregnancy by using clinical data from a comprehensive clinical database, and did descriptive analyses and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.
RESULTS: The overall cesarean rate was 5.

Factors that shaped and promoted cultural norms in the 1900s continue to influence current obstetric practice today. The incidence of cesarean birth too often has little to do with the health needs of the woman or the fetus and more to do with multiple factors over which the woman has no control. Nurses and midwives can reduce unnecessary cesarean births and have the necessary knowledge, competence, and skills to help women give birth without medical intervention.
