Upper limb home-based robotic rehabilitation in chronic stroke patients: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Robotic therapy allow to propose sessions of controlled and identical exercises, customizing settings, and characteristics on the individual patient. The effectiveness of robotic assisted therapy is still under study and the use of robots in clinical practice is still limited. Moreover, the possibility of treatment at home allows to reduce the economic costs and time to be borne by the patient and the caregiver and is a valid tool during periods of pandemic such as covid. The aim of this study is to assess whether a robotic home-based treatment rehabilitation using the iCONE robo

Corneal Wound Healing in the Presence of Antifibrotic Antibody Targeting Collagen Fibrillogenesis: A Pilot Study.

Highly organized collagen fibrils interlacing with proteoglycans form the crucial architecture of the cornea and facilitate its transparency. Corneal scarring from accidental injury, surgery, or infection alters this highly organized tissue, causing severe consequences, including blindness. There are no pharmacological or surgical methods to effectively and safely treat excessive corneal scarring. Thus, we tested the anticorneal scarring utility of a rationally designed anticollagen antibody (ACA) whose antifibrotic effects have already been demonstrated in nonocular models. Utilizing a rabbit

Ultrasound on the Frontlines: Empowering Paramedics with Lung Ultrasound for Dyspnea Diagnosis in Adults-A Pilot Study.

Lung transthoracic ultrasound (LUS) is an accessible and widely applicable method of rapidly imaging certain pathologies in the thorax. LUS proves to be an optimal tool in respiratory emergency medicine, applicable in various clinical settings. However, despite the rapid development of bedside ultrasonography, or point-of-care (POCUS) ultrasound, there remains a scarcity of knowledge about the use of LUS in pre-hospital settings. Therefore, our aim was to assess the usefulness of LUS as an additional tool in diagnosing dyspnea when performed by experienced paramedics in real-life, pre-hospital

Visualization of the Spatiotemporal Propagation of Interictal Spikes in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: A MEG Pilot Study.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is clinically used to localize interictal spikes in discrete brain areas of epilepsy patients through the equivalent current dipole (ECD) method, but does not account for the temporal dynamics of spike activity. Recent studies found that interictal spike propagation beyond the temporal lobe may be associated with worse postsurgical outcomes, but studies using whole-brain data such as in MEG remain limited. In this pilot study, we developed a tool that visualizes the spatiotemporal dynamics of interictal MEG spikes normalized to spike-free sleep activity to assess t

Evaluation of and implications for a novel hepatitis C e-consult direct-to-treatment pilot program.

A Hepatitis C (HCV) e-Consult Direct-To-Treatment (DTT) program managed by midlevel providers was developed at the Veteran Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) which provided remote referral and, in some, remote management of HCV. DTT patients were more likely to be initiated on HCV treatment compared to standard of care (SOC), lending support for similar programs of remote engagement in HCV care.

Long-term effects of COVID-19 on the endocrine system - a pilot case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has permanently changed the world. Despite having been a pandemic for nearly 3 years, the mid- and long-term complications of this disease, including endocrine disorders, remain unclear. Our study aimed to evaluate the lasting effects of COVID-19 on the endocrine system 6 months after initial infection. METHODS: We compared patients who underwent COVID-19 to age- and sex-matched subjects from a population-based study conducted before the pandemic. We evaluated differences in multiple parameters related to metabolism and the endocrine system incl

Alteration of Blood Oxidative Stress Status in Patients with Thoracic Aortic Dissection: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) is a life-threatening condition which usually occurs on an aneurysmal aortic wall. Although increasing data have shown that inflammation and oxidative stress play an important role in the patho-physiology of dissection, systemic oxidative stress status (OSS) has not been clearly determined in patients suffering from TAD. METHODS: A cohort of 115 patients presenting type A or B TAD were admitted to our center from 2013 to 2017. Out of this cohort, 46 patients were included in a study on dissected aorta (LIege study on DIssected Aorta: LIDIA). In 18

Functional Connectivity Analysis of Visually Evoked ERPs for Mild Cognitive Impairment: Pilot Study.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is considered the early stage of Alzheimer's disease, characterized as mild memory loss. A novel method of functional connectivity (FC) analysis can be used to detect MCI before memory is significantly impaired allowing for preventative measures to be taken. FC examines interactions between EEG channels to grant insight on underlying neural networks and analyze the effects of MCI. Applying FC method of weighted phase lag index (wPLI) to P300 ERPs provided insight on the link between the pathology of Alzheimer's disease and cognitive loss. wPLI was analyzed per f
