WITHDRAWN: Pharmacological interventions for treating acute heterotopic ossification.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature lamellar bone in soft tissue sites outside the skeleton. HO frequently complicates burns, arthroplasty, fractures, and spinal cord and brain injuries. It can impair joint function. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of medications to treat acute HO on radiological, symptomatic, functional impairment, and disability outcomes. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group specialised register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library, Issue 2, 2004), MEDLINE (

Tyrosine supplementation for phenylketonuria.

BACKGROUND: Phenylketonuria is an inherited disease for which the main treatment is the dietary restriction of the amino acid phenylalanine. The diet has to be initiated in the neonatal period to prevent or reduce mental handicap. However, the diet is very restrictive and unpalatable and can be difficult to follow. A deficiency of the amino acid tyrosine has been suggested as a cause of some of the neuropsychological problems exhibited in phenylketonuria. Therefore, this review aims to assess the efficacy of tyrosine supplementation for phenylketonuria. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of ty

WITHDRAWN: Immunoglobulin treatment for respiratory syncytial virus infection.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis and pneumonia hospitalise hundreds of thousands of infants every year. Treatment is largely supportive therapy, (for example, oxygen, fluids and occasionally mechanical ventilation). Ribavirin, an antiviral agent, is licensed for severe RSV infection, although systematic reviews find it of no benefit. Passive protection against RSV can be achieved through monthly intramuscular injections of the humanised monoclonal anti-RSV antibody palivizumab (Synagis), and yields a 55% reduction in RSV hospitalisation in susceptible infants. [Review of acupuncture treatment for chronic pharyngitis].

A search in the database of CNKI and VIP access was performed to gather relevant literature about acupuncture treatment for chronic pharyngitis to evaluate and analyze the present situation of clinical research. The results indicate that the combination therapy is the major treatment for chronic pharyngitis, especially in the combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs. There is great progress in clinic research in which proper scientific methodology was adopted. However, it demands further improvement in research quality, cases quality, diagnostic criteria, evaluation standard of efficacy, q

Fluoride toothpastes of different concentrations for preventing dental caries in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Caries (dental decay) is a disease of the hard tissues of the teeth caused by an imbalance, over time, in the interactions between cariogenic bacteria in dental plaque and fermentable carbohydrates (mainly sugars). The use of fluoride toothpaste is the primary intervention for the prevention of caries. OBJECTIVES: To determine the relative effectiveness of fluoride toothpastes of different concentrations in preventing dental caries in children and adolescents, and to examine the potentially modifying effects of baseline caries level and supervised toothbrushing. SEARCH STRATEGY:

Specialist nursing interventions for inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: The number, type and roles of specialist nurses dedicated to the care and management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease is increasing. Despite this increase, there has been little evidence to date to demonstrate the effectiveness of specialist nursing interventions. This review aims to identify and evaluate the impact of specialist nursing interventions on management of inflammatory bowel disease, access to treatment, remission, morbidity and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To identify and evaluate the impact of specialist nursing interventions for improving the care and man

Artichoke leaf extract for treating hypercholesterolaemia.

BACKGROUND: Hypercholesterolaemia is directly associated with an increased risk for coronary heart disease and other sequelae of atherosclerosis. Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) has been implicated in lowering cholesterol levels. Whether ALE is truly effective for this indication, however, is still a matter of debate. OBJECTIVES: To assess the evidence of ALE versus placebo or reference medication for treating hypercholesterolaemia defined as mean total cholesterol levels of at least 5.17 mmol/L (200 mg/dL). SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials 2008 Is

[Clinical efficacy of enzyme replacement therapy in Fabry disease. A critical review].

Fabry disease is a X-linked lysosomal storage disorder. Two preparations of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A are available in Europe since 2001: agalsidase alpha and agalsidase beta. Clinical evidence of efficacy are mandatory considering the absence of a robust biomarker. A literature review was performed to assess the clinical efficacy of these two enzyme replacement therapies. Only open or randomised controlled trials were considered. No unflawed direct comparison exists between the two drugs. Significant clinical benefits have been demonstrated with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), mainly

Immunosuppressant and immunomodulatory treatments for multifocal motor neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal motor neuropathy is characterised by progressive, predominantly distal, asymmetrical limb weakness and usually multiple partial motor nerve conduction blocks. Intravenous immunoglobulin is beneficial but the role of immunosuppressive agents is uncertain. OBJECTIVES: To provide the best available evidence from randomised controlled trials on the role of immunosuppressive agents for the treatment of multifocal motor neuropathy. SEARCH STRATEGY: For this update, we searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Trials Register (October 8 2008), the Cochrane Central Reg

Commentary on Berger, Hohl, and Caspar's (2009) Internet-based treatment for social phobia: a randomized controlled trial.

In this commentary, we discuss the implications of the findings by Berger, Hohl, and Casper (this issue) together with the emerging database on the effects of Internet treatment for social anxiety disorder (social phobia). Their article is the third independent replication of guided Internet treatment of social anxiety disorder, and in this article, we comment on future research challenges and if Internet treatment now can be regarded as ready for dissemination into regular clinical settings.

A reassessment of risks and benefits of dopamine agonists in Parkinson's disease.

Neurologists have several choices of drugs that have been shown to be effective for the treatment of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Among the first options are the dopamine agonists, which are commonly used both as an early monotherapy and as an adjunct therapy to levodopa. However, before starting any treatment, the overall benefit-to-risk ratio to individual patients must be considered. For the dopamine agonists, the available evidence on their symptomatic efficacy, effect on long-term levodopa-related motor complications, putative effect on progression of disease, and adverse event pr

Pharmacological interventions for preventing complications in idiopathic hypercalciuria.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic hypercalciuria is an inherited metabolic abnormality characterised by excessive amounts of calcium excreted into the urine in patients with normal serum levels of calcium. The morbidity of hypercalciuria is related to kidney stone disease and bone demineralization. In children, hypercalciuria can cause recurrent haematuria, frequency-dysuria syndrome, urinary tract infection and abdominal and lumbar pain. Several pharmacological treatments have been described that can decrease the levels of urinary calcium or its index of urinary crystallization. OBJECTIVES: To assess t

Anti-fibrinolytic agents in post partum haemorrhage: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Post partum haemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal death worldwide. It also contributes to maternal morbidity as women may require a hysterectomy to control bleeding, or may require a blood transfusion, which can transmit viral infections. Anti-fibrinolytic agents have been proposed as a treatment for post partum haemorrhage. We conducted a systematic review to assess the effectiveness and safety of anti-fibrinolytic agents in post partum bleeding. METHODS: All randomised controlled trials of anti-fibrinolytic agents given for bleeding during the postpartum period were include
