Selected sleep disturbances in school children reported by parents: prevalence, interrelationships, behavioral correlates and parental attributions.

Epidemiological, behavioral and etiological variables related to sleep disturbances were investigated in a survey of 1695 children in Grades 1 to 12 from 11 randomly selected schools. Sleep-walking, nightmares and sleep-talking were strongly associated with each other as well as to a family history of sleep-walking. Enuresis, however, was not related to the other sleep variables. Socioeconomic status of father was weakly related to enuresis and sleep-talking but not to sleep-walking or nightmares. Gender was not related to any of the sleep disturbances. The behavioral variables, physical activ

Lack of association between bacteriuria and symptoms in the elderly.

In a study of bacteriuria in elderly (mean age 85 years, range 69 to 101), mostly middle- and upper-class Jewish subjects, attempts were made to determine if bacteriuria without dysuria is otherwise asymptomatic. Seventy-two subjects (59 women and 13 men) without dysuria were questioned about other urinary symptoms (incontinence, frequency, urgency, suprapubic pain, flank pain, fever) and symptoms indicating a lack of well-being (anorexia, difficulty in falling asleep, difficulty in staying asleep, fatigue, malaise, weakness) when they were with and without bacteriuria. Twenty-two subjects had

Upper gastrointestinal and mental symptoms in the irritable bowel syndrome.

Gastrointestinal and mental symptoms were assessed in 101 outpatients with the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A normal female population was used for comparison of mental symptoms. By definition all patients had abdominal pains and/or change of bowel habits (constipation or diarrhoea, or both) but no demonstrable organic disease. Upper gastrointestinal symptoms without peptic ulcer disease were reported by 87% of the patients. Mental symptoms were reported by almost all patients. Symptoms of anxiety, fatiguability, hostile feelings, sadness, and sleep disturbances were seen significantly more

[Problems with hypnotic drug abuse and its therapy (author's transl)].

Barbiturate dependence leads to serious withdrawel symptoms requiring first hospitalisation and later intensive outpatient treatment. This treatment can be supported with neuroleptic and anti depressant drug therapy. Adequate supportive aftercare is essential for a successful treatment of drugdependence.

Retrognathia and sleep apnea. A life-threatening condition masquerading as narcolepsy.

The association of sleep apnea with daytime hypersomnolence without obesity, and its potentially lethal cardiopulmonary sequelae, make it crucial that this condition be distinguished from narcolepsy. A patient with retrognathia who had been diagnosed as a narcoleptic for 15 years had the primary complaint of excessive daytime sleepiness. Sleep laboratory evaluation showed severe hypoxemia and a mean of 366 upper airway obstructions per night. The patient was treated with a tracheotomy; this resulted in relief of the sleep-related upper airway obstructions, hypoxemia, and hypersomnolence.

Psychological burden in mothers of children with drug allergy: a comparative study of anxiety, depression, and sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric drug allergies are increasingly recognized as a clinical concern, not only due to potential severe reactions but also their effects on family well-being. Mothers, as primary caregivers, may experience heightened psychological distress, yet little research has explored their mental health and sleep quality. OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare anxiety, depression, and sleep quality among mothers of drug-allergic children and those of non-allergic children. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 200 mothers: 100 of drug-allergic children (Patient Group, PG) and 100 contro

Role of gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic neurons in the thalamic reticular nucleus in regulating sleep-wake cycles in mice treated with acupuncture for insomnia.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether acupuncture improves sleep by enhancing gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic (GABA) neuronal activity in the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN). METHODS: We established an animal model using p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA). We assessed the impact of acupuncture on insomnia through wheel-running activity and sodium pentobarbital-induced sleep tests. Subsequently, the calcium indicator GCaMP6m was injected into the TRN of Vgat-Cre mice, and the activity of GABA neurons in the TRN was analyzed before and after acupuncture using fiber photometry recording. Additionally, cortical el

Comparative effectiveness of traditional Chinese non-pharmacological therapies for chemotherapy-related symptoms in cancer patients: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-related fatigue, sleep disturbance, and psychological distress significantly impair quality of life (QoL) in cancer patients. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) non-pharmacological therapies are increasingly used as supportive care, yet their comparative effectiveness remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate and compare five TCM-based interventions for improving QoL and emotional well-being in chemotherapy patients. METHODS: A systematic review and network meta-analysis was conducted, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published through April 2025. Fiv

Association between sleep quality and the occurrence of lower urinary tract symptoms among female nurses: Mediating roles of anxiety and depression.

OBJECTIVES: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common among female nurses. However, the occupational contributors and underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether sleep quality predicts the occurrence of LUTS among female nurses and whether anxiety and depression mediate this relationship. METHODS: This study utilized baseline and first-wave follow-up data from the Nurse Urinary Related Health Study. A total of 3565 female nurses without LUTS at baseline were followed up for a median of 2.81 years. LUTS were assessed via the Chinese version of the I

Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Depressive Symptoms in a 12-Year Korean Occupational Cohort: A Threshold Effect Confined to Severe Deficiency.

Background/Objectives: Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] has been proposed as a modifiable risk factor for depression, but the shape of the exposure-response relationship and its independence from sleep disturbance have not been characterised in a large occupational cohort with repeated measures. Methods: We analysed 246,751 health examinations of 62,989 Korean adults over 12 annual waves (2014-2025). Depressive symptoms were measured with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Hierarchical linear an

Constipation severity mediates the relationship between affective symptoms and sleep quality among people with schizophrenia: A multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: More than half of people with schizophrenia experience poor sleep quality, which is greater than the proportion among the general population and among individuals with bipolar disorder. Poor sleep is a key indicator of symptom stability. Constipation is also more common in this population. While emerging evidence suggests that gut-brain interactions play a role in affective disorders, the relationship between constipation severity and sleep disturbances remains underexplored. AIM: This study examined the mediating effect of constipation severity on the relationship between affecti
