Does Personality Modulate the Sensitivity to Contaminants? A Case Study with Cadmium and Caffeine.

Personality has been reported to influence fish response to stress. This study aimed to assess whether shy and bold fish display different sensitivities to two environmental contaminants: caffeine (CAF) and cadmium (Cd). Thus, the sensitivity to Cd was compared based on lethal concentrations (LCs). The potential different response to CAF, known to alter the social behavior and locomotor activity of zebrafish, was studied using behavioral parameters. Overall, different LC values were found for each group: 48 h LC50 values of 4.79 (shy fish) and 8.20 mg·L-1 (bold fish); and 96 h LC50 values of 3

Towards the standardisation of adult person-reported outcome domains in diabetes research: A Consensus Statement development panel.

Diabetes is unique among chronic diseases because clinical outcomes are intimately tied to how the person living with diabetes reacts to and implements treatment recommendations. It is further characterised by widespread social stigma, judgement and paternalism. This physical, social and psychological burden collectively influences self-management behaviours. It is widely recognised that the individual's perspective about the impact of trying to manage the disease and the burden that self-management confers must be addressed to achieve optimal health outcomes. Standardised, rigorous assessment

Exposure to nicotine pouch marketing and nicotine pouch experimentation among U.S. adults who use commercial tobacco.

OBJECTIVE: U.S. nicotine pouch (NP) sales have grown since 2016. Among U.S. adults who currently and formerly used commercial tobacco, we examined demographic associations with learning about NPs through varying marketing channels, and their associations with NP experimentation overall and stratified by race/ethnicity. METHODS: A nationally representative sample of U.S. adults who currently and formerly used commercial tobacco (n = 1,700) were surveyed online in January-February 2021. Participants reported their demographics and whether they learned about NPs through nine marketing channels.

Associations of polysocial risk score, lifestyle and genetic factors with incident psoriasis: a larger-scale prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of polysocial risk score (PsRS), a composite measure of multiple social risk factors, on the development of psoriasis remains unclear. Moreover, the potential modifying effects of lifestyle and genetic susceptibility on the relationship between PsRS and psoriasis risk require further exploration. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study conducted among UK Biobank. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed 331,631 participants enrolled in the UK Biobank cohort. To derive the PsRS, we utilized a summative strategy, amalgamating six social determinants of health derive

Factors associated with loneliness in immigrant and Canadian-born older adults in Ontario, Canada: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: While loneliness is common in older adults, some immigrant groups are at higher risk. To inform tailored interventions, we ident … f loneliness (30.8% and 34.0%, respectively). Shared correlates of loneliness included low positive social interaction and wanting to participate more in social, recreational or group activities. In older immigrants, unique correlates included: widowhood, poor health (i.e., physical, mental and social well-being), less time in Canada, and lower neighborhood-level et …

Poly-victimization of autistic adults: An investigation of individual-level correlates.

Autistic people experience high rates of violence and victimization which is largely due to structural injustices, including stigma and social attitudes. Identifying and addressing systemic and structural factors is vitally important, however effecting change in embedded social structures is likely to take some time, even with concerted efforts. In the meantime, it is important to understand whether there are other individual-level factors that may assist in developing preventative and protective strategies for autistic people. The current study investigated the role of individual-level risk f

Role of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 in psychosis and the modulatory effects of cannabinoids.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a serine/threonine kinase that has emerged as a key regulator of neurotransmission in complex cognitive processes. Its expression is altered in treated schizophrenia patients, and cannabinoids modulate CDK5 levels in the brain of rodents. However, the role of this kinase, and its interaction with cannabis use in first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients is still not known. Hence, we studied the expression changes of CDK5 and its signaling partner, postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) in olfactory neuroepithelial (ON) cells of FEP patients with (FEP/c) and wi

Marriage as a social tie in the relation of depressive symptoms attributable to air pollution exposure among the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a risk factor for depression or depressive symptoms. However, few studies have examined an effect modifier as a protective factor against depressive symptoms associated with air pollution, including social support. Notably, less is known about a married relationship in the association between exposure to air pollution and depressive symptoms among the elderly. METHODS: This study included 2122 marrieds and 607 non-marrieds, recruited in 2014-2017 from different regions of South Korea. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Korean version of the Geriatric Depress

Relationship between absolute and relative ratios of glutamate, glutamine and GABA and severity of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental pathology characterized by an impairment in social interaction, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors. Glutamate signaling abnormalities are thought to be considered as major etiological mechanisms leading to ASD. The search for amino-acidic catabolytes related to glutamate in patients with different levels of ASD might help current research to clarify the mechanisms underlying glutamate signaling and its disorders, particularly in relation to ASD. In the present study, plasma levels of the amino acids and their derivatives …

Syndemics and gender affirmation: HIV sexual risk in female-to-male trans masculine adults reporting sexual contact with cisgender males.

Female-to-male trans masculine adults who have sex with cisgender (non-transgender) males (TMSM) represent an understudied population in relation to HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk. This study examined the role of syndemic conditions and social gender affirmation processes (living full-time in one's identified gender) in potentiating sexual risk among TMSM adults in Massachusetts, US. Cross-sectional data were restricted to TMSM who reported lifetime sexual behaviour with a cisgender male (n = 173; mean age = 29.4, SD = 9.6; 18.5% people of colour; 93.1% non-heterosexual identity

Cortisol plasma levels in social anxiety disorder patients correlate with serotonin-1A receptor binding in limbic brain regions.

Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis with deficient glucocorticoid feedback and alterations in the serotonergic system have been identified as biological correlates of mood disorders. Close examination of the interaction between these systems may offer insights into the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders and depression to understand how stress and these disorders are related. In this study, we investigated the relationship between plasma levels of cortisol and the dominant inhibitory serotonergic receptor, serotonin-1A (5-HT1A). Using positron emission tomography (

Integrating neurobiology and psychopathology into evidence-based treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common, chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by a persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment can occur. This disorder typically appears during the mid-adolescent years and is unremitting throughout life if not properly treated. SAD presents as two subtypes: the more common and debilitating generalized form, and the nongeneralized form, which consists predominantly of performance anxiety. The majority of patients with SAD have comorbid mental disorders, including mood, anxiety, and substance abuse. No single development th
