The psychosocial impact of HIV infection in men with haemophilia: controlled investigation and factors associated with psychiatric morbidity.

The aim of the investigation was to establish the prevalence of psychosocial problems in men with haemophilia and HIV infection, and to identify factors associated with psychological morbidity. A cross-sectional controlled study including 37 HIV seropositive and 36 HIV seronegative men with haemophilia under the care of the Oxford Haemophilia Centre were included in the investigation. The outcome measures included current psychological status (PSE, POMS, Beck Hopelessness Scale and Self-Esteem) and psychiatric history; coping and health beliefs (Self-Control Schedule, Hardiness Scale, Health L

Cardiovascular correlates of type A behavior components during social interaction.

This study examined the cardiovascular (CV) correlates of the primary Type A behavior components during social interactions. Brief dialogues were created to role-play (RP) stereotypic Type A and Type B ways of responding to three common social situations designed to elicit hostility (H), time-urgency (T), and competition (C). Situations and dialogues were validated by independent raters. Thirty undergraduate students were identified as Type A and 30 as Type B, with 15 males and 15 females in each group. Subjects were provided scripts for each of the six experimental RPs and rehearsed them prio

Treatment resistant schizophrenia is associated with the worst community functioning among severely-ill highly-disabling psychiatric conditions and is the most relevant predictor of poorer achievements in functional milestones.

The aim of this work was to compare achievements in milestones of community functioning in highly disabling psychiatric conditions, including treatment resistant schizophrenia (TRS), schizophrenia (responsive to antipsychotics), bipolar disorder, and anxiety/depressive diseases. Also, we investigated the predictors of community functioning outcomes across several domains. Among consecutive patients screened, 188 met inclusion criteria and 118 ultimately entered the study. Diagnosis of TRS was made by stringent criteria, including historic and perspective evaluations and excluding potential con

Patterns of social inequalities across pregnancy and birth outcomes: a comparison of individual and neighborhood socioeconomic measures.

BACKGROUND: This paper identifies patterns of health inequalities (consistency and magnitude) of socioeconomic disparities for multiple maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes that represent different health care needs of mothers and infants. METHODS: Using cross-sectional national data (unweighted sample = 6,421, weighted =76,508) from the Canadian Maternity Experiences Survey linked with 2006 Canadian census data, we categorized 25 health indicators of mothers of singletons into five groups of MCH outcomes (A. maternal and infant health status indicators; B. prenatal care; C. maternal expe

The gender gap in depressive symptoms among Japanese elders: evaluating social support and health as mediating factors.

Depression has been described as the world's most prevalent illness and a leading cause of disability across age groups. The global literature on aging and depression reports greater prevalence of depressive symptoms among women than men. This research applies data from the Nihon University Japanese Longitudinal Study of Aging to the gender gap in depressive symptoms reported by Japanese elders. This study takes the position that cultural norms centered on obligations to care determine both the prevalence of social support and its application by family members. Since gender is the lens through

Size at birth and growth trajectories to young adulthood.

Few studies in developing countries follow growth trajectories from birth to adulthood. Such studies are important because size at birth and postnatal growth affect risk of chronic disease in adulthood. This study examines the inter-relationships of maternal factors during pregnancy, infant birth weight and length, early postnatal growth, and young adult height, weight, BMI, and skinfold thicknesses, with particular attention to patterns of growth associated with increased chronic disease risk. Women were recruited in pregnancy, and offspring were followed from birth to age 21 in the community

The relationship between avoidant personality disorder and social phobia.

The main explanatory hypothesis for the distinction between social phobia (SP) and avoidant personality disorder (APD) has been the severity continuum hypothesis, stating that APD only differs from SP in terms of severity of dysfunction and symptomatic distress, that is, social anxiety and depressive symptoms. This study aimed at a comprehensive evaluation of this hypothesis in a large sample (n = 2192) of thoroughly assessed patients, most of whom had a diagnosis of personality disorder. Social phobia was stronger associated with APD than with other personality disorders, and APD was stronger

Predictors of incident care service utilisation for mental health problems in the Dutch general population.

BACKGROUND: The determinants of first-time ('incident') use of primary care and mental health care services for mental health problems have not been previously investigated. Such information is needed to identify new client groups and to gain a better understanding of causal factors. METHOD: Data were derived from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study, NEMESIS, a prospective general population study of adults. Potential predictors of care use (psychiatric disorders, burden of illness, sociodemographic characteristics) were recorded in the first wave of the study, and the ut

Recognition and Management of Feeding Dysfunction in the Pediatric Patient with Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Feeding is a complex skill requiring coordination of multiple body systems. Multiple factors are considered in feeding dysfunction in pediatric patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, including overall development, nutritional status, mealtime behaviors, and medical comorbidities. Symptoms of feeding dysfunction vary by age, with maladaptive learned feeding behaviors spanning all age ranges. Knowledge of the normal acquisition of feeding skills is critical to interpret the impact of the disease and plan appropriate intervention. Assessment and treatment from a feeding and swallo

Shigella storm and men who have sex with men: A perspective on the Indian context.

Shigellosis is one of the driving factors for extrahepatic manifestations of sexually transmitted Hepatitis-C infection, which was previously thought to affect only men who have sex with men (MSM) who were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive. Highly infectious diseases like shigellosis which has been termed as the potent factor for creating "perfect storm" of disease transmission with the conjunction of specific sexual activities between men, and HIV status is something which needs attention. Strategies such as health communication and social marketing could be utilized to enhance MSM

Substance use-related factors and psychosocial characteristics among Turkish adults with early- and late-onset substance use disorder.

The onset of substance use is a strong predictor of substance use disorders and related problems. This study examined the differences between early- and late-onset substance use in personality and substance use characteristics, traumatic experiences, and social support with a sample of 100 Turkish adults with substance use disorders. Early onset (<18 years) was associated with more traumatic experiences, increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and higher levels of depressive symptoms compared to late onset (≥18 years). Also, depressive symptoms, living, and working s

Nanotechnology-driven advances in the treatment of diabetic wounds.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are chronic severe complications of diabetes disease and remain a worldwide clinical challenge with social and economic consequences. Diabetic wounds can cause infection, amputation of lower extremities, and even death. Several factors including impaired angiogenesis, vascular insufficiency, and bacterial infections result in a delayed process of wound healing in diabetic patients. Treatment of wound infections using traditional antibiotics has become a critical status. Thus, finding new therapeutic strategies to manage diabetic wounds is urgently needed. Nanotechno

Risk for alcohol-related accidents in divorced and separated women.

The relationship between marital status and risk for alcohol-related automobile accidents was examined in 10,544 subjects (12% women) who entered 28 driver alcohol education programs over a 6-month period in 1983. Women were more likely than men to be divorced or separated (28 vs 16%). In their marital category, women were younger than men and were more likely to be living alone with their children. The findings implicate the role of lifestyle factors in the development and maintenance of alcohol-related problems, and suggest that women in driver alcohol education programs may require more hel
