Photobiomodulation with a combination of two wavelengths in the treatment of oral mucositis in children: The PEDIALASE feasibility study.

Photobiomodulation is recommended in adults for the prevention of mucositis induced by cervicofacial irradiation or pre-transplant chemotherapy. The results of pediatric studies are promising but this support treatment is still underused. The objective was to conduct a feasibility study in the pediatric hematology-oncology unit at X Children's Hospital. Extra- and intraoral scans were performed a minimum of three times every 2 days for grade 2 or higher mucositis in children (median age, 8.6 years) using the Oncolase laser (Biophoton, Saint Alban, France), with a combination of two wavelengths

Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) - The future of IMRT for head and neck cancer.

Radiation therapy plays an integral role in the management of head and neck cancers (HNCs). While most HNC patients have historically been treated with photon-based radiation techniques such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), there is a growing awareness of the potential clinical benefits of proton therapy over IMRT in the definitive, postoperative and reirradiation settings given the unique physical properties of protons. Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT), also known as "pencil beam proton therapy," is a sophisticated mode of proton therapy that is analogous to IMRT and

Preliminary study in a new protocol for the treatment of oral mucositis in pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and chemotherapy (CT).

Oral mucositis (OM) is a debilitating and serious side effect in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and chemotherapy (CT). Laser therapy is becoming a promising treatment option in these patients, avoiding the necessity of enteral/parenteral nutrition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of laser therapy in patients affected by oral mucositis induced by chemotherapy and HSCT. Sixteen onco-hematological pediatric patients receiving chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, affected by oral mucositis, were enrolled in this study. The

Nigella sativa and its active constituent thymoquinone in oral health.

In this review, we summarized published reports that investigated the role of Nigella sativa (NS) and its active constituent, thymoquinone (TQ) in oral health and disease management. The literature studies were preliminary and scanty, but the results revealed that black seed plants have a potential therapeutic effect for oral and dental diseases. Such results are encouraging for the incorporation of these plants in dental therapeutics and hygiene products. However, further detailed preclinical and clinical studies at the cellular and molecular levels are required to investigate the mechanisms

Management of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.

Peri-implant diseases are defined as inflammatory lesions of the surrounding peri-implant tissues and include peri-implant mucositis (an inflammatory lesion limited to the surrounding mucosa of an implant) and peri-implantitis (an inflammatory lesion of the mucosa that affects the supporting bone with resulting loss of osseointegration). This review aims to describe the different approaches to manage both entities and to provide a critical evaluation of the evidence available on their efficacy. Therapy of peri-implant mucositis and nonsurgical therapy of peri-implantitis usually involve mechan

Miniscrew covering: an alternative to prevent traumatic lesions.

During orthodontic treatment with miniscrews, complications such as aphthous ulceration, soft-tissue coverage of the miniscrew head, soft-tissue inflammation, infection, and peri-implantitis can occur. Good hygiene can prevent inflammation by infection but does not prevent traumatic oral mucosal lesions at the buccal mucosa. The purpose of this article was to describe the use of a physical barrier--a light-cured temporary filling material--to cover the miniscrew head and prevent soft-tissue trauma.

Chemotherapy- and radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis: pathobiology, epidemiology and management.

Oral mucositis is a debilitating complication of anticancer treatment, characterised by erythematous, atrophic, erosive or ulcerative lesions. Oral mucositis is almost always painful, affects eating, sleeping, and speech and affects the physiological and social well-being of the patient. The pathophysiology of the condition is not well understood. Guidelines to the treatment of oral mucositis are often contradictory so that there is no evidence based standard treatment protocol. Therefore the treatment is empiric. This paper offers a brief review of current knowledge of the pathophysiology and

Comparison of efficacy of fluconazole mouthrinse and clotrimazole mouthpaint in the treatment of oral candidiasis.

Candidiasis is by far the most common oral fungal infection in humans and has a variety of clinical features. It is considered to be an opportunistic infection, affecting individuals who are debilitated by another disease. Fluconazole, one of the newer azoles available for systemic use and clotrimazole as a topical ointment are both shown to be effective in the treatment of oral candidiasis and are considered to be well tolerated and useful medications. No study has evaluated the comparison of clinical and mycological response of oral candidiasis to fluconazole mouthrinse and clotrimazole mout
