Heterogeneous reactions of SO2 and O3 with CaCO3 particles were investigated at a series of relative humidity (RH, 1% to 90%) and 298K using a diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The uptake coefficients of SO2 on CaCO3 at different RHs were obtained for the first time. The role of contact allergy in rosacea has rarely been investigated. In this retrospective study, 361 out of 76,697 patients tested and documented by the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology between 1995 and 2002 had rosacea. Patch tests included standard series and constituents of cosmetics and topical medicaments. 118/361 had additionally been patch tested with their own cosmetics/medicaments. Positive reactions occurred to nickel (II) sulfate in 9.3%, fragrance mix in 8.8%, thimerosal in 6.9%, Myroxylon pereirae resin in 5.9%, potassium dichromate in 4.6% and propolis in 2.8%.

200 patients (122 male, 78 female) with suspected allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested with the European standard series (ESS) and the results compared with other Asian centres. 131 (65.5%) patients showed 1 or more patch test positives to the ESS. The prominence of sulfate reducers in mercury biomethylation prompted the examination of the methyl carrier and mercury methylation activity of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans LS. Marble industry worldwide produces large amount of non-degradable marble dust powder (MDP) waste during mining and processing stages. MDP mainly comprises of CaCO3 with small amounts of Mg, Fe or Si in various forms.
