Assessment of autonomic nervous activity by heart rate spectral analysis in patients with variant angina.

The purpose of this study was to assess the role of the autonomic nervous system in the pathogenesis of coronary artery spasm in patients with variant angina. We evaluated cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic activity from the power (logarithmic scale) of the low-frequency (approximately 0.04 to 0.12 Hz) and the high-frequency (approximately 0.22 to 0.32 Hz) spectral components of heart rate variability with Holter monitoring in seven patients with nocturnal variant angina and in 11 healthy men who served as control subjects. None of the patients had organic coronary artery stenosis as dete

Altered adrenergic activity in coronary arterial spasm: insight into mechanism based on study of coronary hemodynamics and the electrocardiogram.

To elucidate the pathophysiologic mechanism of coronary arterial spasm, the hypothesis was examined that underlying alterations in sympathet … metric stellate ganglion stimulation in animals. These observations suggest that alterations in the sympathetic nervous system that are consistent with asymmetric stellate ganglion activity and transient alpha adrenergic receptor stimulation can presage the development of coronary arterial spasm in some patients with variant angina pectoris.

[Correlations between blood pressure, blood volume and plasma renin during therapy with diuretics in essential hypertension. Comparison between the mineralocorticoid antagonist spironolactone and the "loop" diuretic mefruside].

35 patients with benign essential hypertension were treated for 6 weeks with high doses of the mineralocorticoid-antagonist spironolactone ( … constant blood pressure during volume depletion may partly depend on compensatory activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Moreover, patients with low-renin essential hypertension have been found to have decreased adrenergic activity. It seems possible, therefore, that the marked blood pressure sensitivity to diuretic treatment in such patients may be the result of an …

Vasomotor regulation in patients with multiple system atrophy.

To investigate the vasomotor regulation in multiple system atrophy (MSA), we simultaneously recorded muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), heart rate, and blood pressure in 14 MSA patients without syncope and 18 healthy subjects. Resting MSNA bursts were significantly less frequent in MSA patients than healthy subjects (p < 0.001), while the increase of MSNA bursts with head-up tilt was significantly greater in MSA patients (p < 0.01). In patients with MSA, orthostatic hypotension may be prevented by an augmented MSNA response.

Role of the kidney in the prenatal and early postnatal programming of hypertension.

Epidemiologic studies from several different populations have demonstrated that prenatal insults, which adversely affect fetal growth, result in an increased incidence of hypertension when the offspring reaches adulthood. It is now becoming evident that low-birth-weight infants are also at increased risk for chronic kidney disease. To determine how prenatal insults result in hypertension and chronic kidney disease, investigators have used animal models that mimic the adverse events that occur in pregnant women, such as dietary protein or total caloric deprivation, uteroplacental insufficiency,

Vagal neurostimulation in patients with coronary artery disease.

We tested the hypotheses that (1) progression of coronary artery disease (CAD) increases sympathetic inflow to the heart, thus impairing cardiac blood supply, and (2) reduced sympathetic tone improves cardiac microcirculation and ameliorates severity of anginal symptoms. Electrical irritation of the nerve auricularis--a sensitive ramus of the vagus nerve--provides a central sympatholytic action. Using this technique, we studied the effects of vagal neurostimulation (VNS) on hemodynamics, the content of atrial noradrenergic nerves and the microcirculatory bed of CAD patients. VNS was performed

Ethanol inhibits chemoreflex excitation of reticulospinal vasomotor neurons.

In anesthetized and ventilated rats, activation of carotid chemoreceptors with intracarotid administration of 100 nmol sodium cyanide rapidly excited the spinal cord-projecting vasomotor neurons in the rostroventrolateral reticular nucleus (RVL) of the medulla oblongata and sympathetic nerves and increased arterial pressure. The chemoreflex sympathoexcitatory pressor responses were attenuated by an acute systemic administration of ethanol at 0.45 g/kg, but not at 45 mg/kg. The ethanol effects were observed at the level of RVL-spinal vasomotor neurons, in attenuating the neuronal responses to t

Caffeine promotes survival of cultured sympathetic neurons deprived of nerve growth factor through a cAMP-dependent mechanism.

The effects of caffeine on neuronal survival independent of trophic factor support were examined in developing superior cervical ganglion in vitro. We found that caffeine promoted neuronal survival in the absence of nerve growth-factor (NGF) in a dose-dependent manner (EC50 = 6 mM). Pulse treatment with caffeine or high K+ (40 mM), which caused only a transient increase in intracellular free Ca2+ levels ([Ca2+]i), did not promote survival. In contrast, caffeine potentiated the saving effect of various phosphodiesterase inhibitors including theophylline (EC50 = 3 mM) and 3-isobutyl-1-methylxant

Effects of bucindolol on neurohormonal activation in congestive heart failure.

To examine the effects of beta-adrenergic blockade on neurohormonal activation in patients with congestive heart failure, 15 men had assessments of hemodynamics and supine peripheral renin and norepinephrine levels before and after 3 months of oral therapy with bucindolol, a nonselective beta antagonist. At baseline, plasma renin activity did not correlate with any hemodynamic parameter. However, norepinephrine levels had a weak correlation with left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (r = 0.74, p less than 0.01), stroke volume index (r = 0.61, p less than 0.02) and pulmonary vascular resistan

Pathophysiology of hepatic ischemia in cardiogenic shock.

The hepatic hemodynamic response to cardiogenic shock was investigated in a porcine model produced by pericardial tamponade to better understand the pathophysiology of postshock hepatic insufficiency. Reductions of cardiac output to 50 percent of baseline levels produced marked hepatic ischemia by causing disproportionate reductions in blood flow through the celiac and hepatic arteries and portal vein. These were due to selective vasoconstriction of the splanchnic resistance vessels that was mimicked without tamponade by the infusion of angiotensin II, ablated by angiotensin-converting enzyme

Gastrointestinal factors in hunger and satiety.

The evidence for the participation of signals from the gastrointestinal tract in hunger and satiety is reviewed. Various methods of subjecting only certain portions of the gastrointestinal tract to food are described including sham feeding, crossing of the intestines of two animals, and intragastric, intraduodenal and intravenous feeding. These methods have revealed that animals eat more when only the mouth is exposed to food, but consume less when food enters the stomach directly and still less when feeding themselves intravenously. The role of the stomach in satiety is discussed in relation

Autonomic responses to aerobic and resistance exercise in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) show autonomic dysregulation after exercise, and the interventional effects of exercise on the autonomic dysregulation have not been elucidated. The objectives of this study were to reveal acute autonomic responses after aerobic and resistance exercises and the interventional effects of both exercises on autonomic dysregulation in patients with CMP. METHODS: A systematic search using nine electronic databases was performed based on three key search terms: "chronic musculoskeletal pain," "autonomic nervous syste

The Indices of Instantaneous Pulse Rate Variability Are Indicators for Daily Life Quality Assessment in Patients with COPD.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory illness. Questionnaires such as modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale and COPD assessment test (CAT) are useful for COPD condition and life quality assessment. These questionnaires reflect how respiratory disorder affects daily life. Breathing and autonomic nervous system (ANS) usually regulate each other. Few studies discussed the ANS activity and daily life quality in patients with COPD. Therefore, this study aimed to find the relationship between daily life quality assessed by mMRC or CAT and ANS asse

Production of Lactobacillus brevis ProGA28 attenuates stress-related sleep disturbance and modulates the autonomic nervous system and the motor response in anxiety/depression behavioral tests in Wistar-Kyoto rats.

AIMS: Many studies have reported that the production of Lactobacillus brevis is beneficial for sleep, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Other known beneficial effects of Lactobacillus brevis include improvement of anxious or depressive symptoms and better modulation of the autonomic nervous system, both of which impact sleep. In this study, we investigated whether the sleep benefit of Lactobacillus brevis was associated with the modulating effects on the autonomic nervous system and anxious/depressive symptoms. MAIN METHODS: Wistar-Kyoto rats were fed the production of Lactobacill

A rare case of REM sleep-related bradyarrhythmia syndrome with concomitant severe hypertension: a case report and a review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-related bradyarrhythmia syndrome is characterized by pathological asystoles during the REM sleep phase. It is a rare rhythm disorder, being reported only few times in the literature. Due to non-specific symptoms, REM sleep-related bradyarrhythmia might be often underdiagnosed. Other cardiac diseases associated with pathological sinus arrests must be excluded to establish the correct diagnosis of and appropriate therapy for REM sleep-related bradyarrhythmia. We report a case of this syndrome followed by hypertension and diastolic heart failure. THE

Green Mind Theory: How Brain-Body-Behaviour Links into Natural and Social Environments for Healthy Habits.

We propose a Green Mind Theory (GMT) to link the human mind with the brain and body, and connect the body into natural and social environmen … learning, and the driver of rest and digest. The bottom brain reacts before thought and directs the sympathetic nervous system. The top brain is calming, directing the parasympathetic nervous system. Here, we call the top brain blue and the bottom brain red; too much red brain is bad for health. In modern high-consumption economies, life has often come to be lived on red al …

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa results in painful small fibre neuropathy.

Small fibres in the skin are vulnerable to damage in metabolic or toxic conditions such as diabetes mellitus or chemotherapy resulting in small fibre neuropathy and associated neuropathic pain. Whether injury to the most distal portion of sensory small fibres due to a primary dermatological disorder can cause neuropathic pain is still unclear. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a rare condition in which mutations of proteins of the dermo-epidermal junction lead to cycles of blistering followed by regeneration of the skin. Damage is exclusive to the skin and mucous membranes,

Central acetylcholinesterase inhibition improves hemodynamic counterregulation to severe blood loss in alcohol-intoxicated rats.

Acute alcohol intoxication results in impaired hemodynamic counterregulation to blood loss and is associated with an attenuated hemorrhage-induced release of catecholamines and AVP. We speculated that restoration of the neuroendocrine response to hemorrhage would improve mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) recovery during acute alcohol intoxication. Previously, we demonstrated that intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) choline, a precursor of acetylcholine, transiently increases sympathetic nervous system (SNS) outflow but is not capable of improving neuroendocrine and hemodynamic compensation to h…
