New context, new content-Rethinking genital anatomy in textbooks.

It has been widely claimed that reductions in allocated teaching time and the widespread implementation of short-cut teaching methodologies have led to a shortfall in anatomy knowledge among graduating doctors. This decline in knowledge is evident in the failure of anatomy content to prepare graduates for contemporary clinical practice. The implications for postgraduate surgical training are addressed in the numerous extracurricular anatomy courses available to surgical candidates. This paper focuses on genital diversity and its relevance to non-surgical graduates, thus highlighting another po…

A National Survey of Medical School Curricula on Criminal Justice and Health.

The number of U.S. medical schools that provide clinical training in correctional facilities or classroom-based training in criminal justice-related issues is unknown. This study consisted of an online survey of deans of education at U.S. schools granting an MD degree to assess teaching regarding criminal justice and health, and clinical training in correctional settings. We compared perceptions of such training and perceptions of graduate preparedness between programs with and without correctional health curricula. Institutions that offered instruction in correctional health were significantl…

Infective agents in fixed human cadavers: a brief review and suggested guidelines.

Cadavers remain a principal teaching tool for anatomists and medical educators teaching gross anatomy. Infectious pathogens in cadavers that present particular risks include Mycobacterium tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, the AIDS virus HIV, and prions that cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS). It is often claimed that fixatives are effective in inactivation of these agents. Unfortunately cadavers, even though they are fixed, may still pose infection hazards to those who handle them. Specific sa…

Sun awareness in school teachers.

School children are important targets for sun awareness education, but the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of school teachers with respect to sun awareness are poorly understood. A questionnaire-based survey of 76 school teachers was undertaken. Twenty-four per cent of teachers indicated previous experience in teaching sun awareness, but 93% of teachers had no classroom resources for teaching sun awareness. Sun awareness was perceived by respondents as unimportant relative to other health education issues. There was considerable scope for improvement in attitudes and behaviour of teachers w…

Magnetic resonance imaging of chest wall lesions.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrates surface anatomy, nerves, and soft tissue pathology. Selective placement of the cursor lines in MRI displays specific anatomy. The MR images can then be used as adjunct in teaching surface anatomy to medical students and to other health professionals. Because the normal surface anatomy could be imaged at UCLA's radiology department, it was decided to image soft tissue abnormalities with MR to assist in patient care. Patients imaged were scheduled for special procedures of the chest or staging lymphangiograms. Patients were placed into categories dep…

Assistive technology for students with intellectual disability: examining special education teachers ' perceptions in Saudi Arabia.

Individuals with an intellectual disability (ID) have complex learning needs, and often experience difficulty acquiring new skills that rely solely on traditional teaching materials. Assistive technology (AT) is a powerful tool that plays an important role in addressing many of the issues encountered by those with ID, via the integration of technology in their learning process. This study explores teachers' views of AT facilities in different special education programs for students with ID in the Makkah province of Saudi Arabia, in order to identify the uses of the AT tools used to teach them.…

Reducing risk of head injury in youth soccer: An extension of behavioral skills training for heading.

Recently, concerns regarding sport-related concussions have increased within the research literature, the media, and popular culture. One potential source of soccer-related concussions involves the purposeful striking of the ball with one's head (i.e., heading). There is currently limited research on an effective teaching method to improve safe heading technique. In the current study, Behavior Skills Training (BST) was evaluated as a method to teach correct heading techniques to youth soccer players. BST increased the percentage of correct steps for each player based on a task analysis of head…

Refusing to make sense: mapping the in-coherences of 'trans'.

This article moves from the premise that 'lesbian' is a gendered embodiment marked and put in flux by century-long sexual politics and semiotics and asks how do we begin to map not only its own terrain but the incoherence generated by its intersections with transsexuality/transgender? The author suggests that it is precisely the power of Trans to not make sense that provides it with its most provocative power to disrupt and displace epistemological regimes and asks that we shift our attention from what we teach in Lesbian-Trans Studies to how we teach these studies. The article concludes by su

[Physician from Constance doctor of medicine Georg Vogelin (1508-1542), an early follower of Copernicus].

Georg Vogelin was born in Constance as the son of the town clerk. He studied the artes liberales and medicine at Wittenberg (since 1523) and Montpellier (since 1527). From 1531 onwards he practiced as a medical doctor in Constance. In 1542 Vogelin died of the plague in Constance. Vogelin was very close friends with the medical doctor Achilles Pirmin Gasser (1505-1577) and Georg Joachim Rheticus (1514-1574), a well known pupil of Copernicus. He was amongst the first supporters of the teachings of Copernicus. Gasser, who published the second edition of Rheticus' "Narratio prima" (Basle 1541), de…

A nationwide student survey on biochemistry learning resources in Italy.

Biochemistry is widely recognized as a crucial discipline in life sciences. However, learning biochemistry poses significant challenges, requiring students to understand complex molecular concepts while integrating knowledge across multiple disciplines. This necessitates instructors to innovate their teaching of biochemistry, considering students' learning behaviors. Here, we present the results of a nationwide survey of university students, conducted by the Education Group of the Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, from more than 2000 students across 49 academic institution…

The double policy squeeze on nursing faculties: A critical policy analysis of higher education reform, nursing workforce expansion and nurse educator sustainability.

Nursing workforce policy now asks education systems to expand domestic nurse supply while preparing graduates for older populations, community and primary care, digital health and more complex care pathways. At the same time, universities are expected to demonstrate curriculum innovation, student-centred teaching, quality assurance and institutional performance. The educator capacity required to carry this combined agenda is often assumed rather than planned. This critical policy analysis develops the concept of the double policy squeeze. Using China as an illustrative policy context and linki…
