Visual Information Routes in the Posterior Dorsal and Ventral Face Network Studied with Intracranial Neurophysiology and White Matter Tract Endpoints.

Occipitotemporal regions within the face network process perceptual and socioemotional information, but the dynamics and information flow between different nodes of this network are still debated. Here, we analyzed intracerebral EEG from 11 epileptic patients viewing a stimulus sequence beginning with a neutral face with direct gaze. The gaze could avert or remain direct, while the emotion changed to fearful or happy. N200 field potential peak latencies indicated that face processing begins in inferior occipital cortex and proceeds anteroventrally to fusiform and inferior temporal cortices, in

Temporal cortex activation explains children's improvement in math attitudes.

Math attitudes are related to achievement, yet we do not know how the brain supports changes in math attitudes. 51 children (54.9% female, 45.1% male; 37.3% White, 33.3% Black, 11.8% Latino, 5.9% Asian, 11.8% Other) solved a multiplication task inside the scanner when they were approximately 11 (time 1; T1) and 13 (time 2; T2) years old (i.e., mean age). Results revealed clusters in the left middle to superior temporal gyri at T1 associated with math attitudes at T1 and with their longitudinal improvement. However, changes in attitudes were not associated with brain changes over time. These fi

Temporal pole volume is associated with episodic autobiographical memory in healthy older adults.

Recollection of personal past events differs across the lifespan. Older individuals recall fewer episodic details and convey more semantic information than young. Here we examine how gray matter volumes in temporal lobe regions integral to episodic and semantic memory (hippocampus and temporal poles, respectively) are related to age differences in autobiographical recollection. Gray matter volumes were obtained in healthy young (n = 158) and old (n = 105) adults. The temporal pole was demarcated and hippocampus segmented into anterior and posterior regions to test for volume differences betwee…

Environmental overlap influences goal-oriented coding of spatial sequences differently along the long-axis of hippocampus.

When navigating our world we often first plan or retrieve a route to our goal, avoiding alternative paths to other destinations. Inspired by computational and animal models, we have recently demonstrated evidence that the human hippocampus supports prospective spatial coding, mediated by interactions with the prefrontal cortex. But the relationship between such signals and the need to discriminate possible routes based on their goal remains unclear. In the current study, we combined human fMRI, multi-voxel pattern analysis, and an established paradigm for contrasting memories of nonoverlapping

The Interaction of Cue Type and Its Associated Behavioral Response Dissociates the Neural Activity between the Perirhinal and Postrhinal Cortices.

The perirhinal cortex (PER) and postrhinal cortex (POR) in the medial temporal lobe are commonly described as two distinct systems that process nonspatial and spatial information, respectively. Recent findings suggest that the two regions exhibit functional overlap when processing stimulus information, especially when associative responses are required in goal-directed behavior. However, we lack the neural correlates of this. In the current study, we recorded spiking activities for single units of the PER and POR as rats were required to choose a response associated with the identity of a visu…

High-resolution hippocampal diffusion tensor imaging of mesial temporal sclerosis in refractory epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: We explore the possibility of using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) to discern microstructural abnormalities in the hippocampus indicative of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) at the subfield level. METHODS: We analyzed data from 57 patients with refractory epilepsy who previously underwent 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including DTI as a standard part of presurgical workup. We collected information about each subject's seizure semiology, conventional electroencephalography (EEG), high-density EEG, positron emissi

Analyzing the Role of the P2X7 Receptor in Epilepsy.

Purinergic signaling is increasingly recognized to play a role during the generation of hyperexcitable networks in the brain. Among the purinergic receptors, the ionotropic ATP-gated P2X7 receptor has attracted particular attention as a possible drug target for epilepsy. P2X7 receptor expression is increased in the brain of experimental models of epilepsy and in patients and, P2X7 receptor antagonism modulates seizure severity and epilepsy development. To date, studies analyzing the role of the P2X7 receptor during epilepsy have mainly focused on temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common form of…

Shape of U: The Nonmonotonic Relationship Between Object-Location Memory and Expectedness.

The schema-linked interactions between medial prefrontal and medial temporal lobe (SLIMM) model predicts that memory for object locations is a U-shaped function of the expectancy of those locations. Using immersive virtual reality, we presented participants with 20 objects in locations that varied in their congruency with a kitchen schema. Bayes factors across four experiments (137 adults in total) confirmed the (preregistered) prediction of better memory for highly expected and unexpected locations relative to neutral locations. This U shape was found in location recall and in forced-choice r…

Creating morphological diversity in reptilian temporal skull region: A review of potential developmental mechanisms.

Reptilian skull morphology is highly diverse and broadly categorized into three categories based on the number and position of the temporal fenestrations: anapsid, synapsid, and diapsid. According to recent phylogenetic analysis, temporal fenestrations evolved twice independently in amniotes, once in Synapsida and once in Diapsida. Although functional aspects underlying the evolution of tetrapod temporal fenestrations have been well investigated, few studies have investigated the developmental mechanisms responsible for differences in the pattern of temporal skull region. To determine what the

Circulating cell-free DNA methylation mirrors alterations in cerebral patterns in epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation profiling of circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has rapidly become a promising strategy for biomarker identification and development. The cell-type-specific nature of DNA methylation patterns and the direct relationship between cfDNA and apoptosis can potentially be used non-invasively to predict local alterations. In addition, direct detection of altered DNA methylation patterns performs well as a biomarker. In a previous study, we demonstrated marked DNA methylation alterations in brain tissue from patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclero…

Lesion network mapping of ectopic craniopharyngioma identifies potential cause of psychosis: a case report.

We report the case of a patient with craniopharyngioma who demonstrated ectopic spread to the right temporal lobe and concurrent local recurrence, 10 years after her initial diagnosis. The patient additionally demonstrated new-onset psychotic symptoms of uncertain etiology during her admission. Lesion network mapping identified the ectopic lesion as a putative cause for her psychosis. These findings were substantiated after the resection of the ectopic lesion and subsequent resolution of her psychiatric symptoms. This report adds to the rare accounts of ectopic craniopharyngioma, while highlig…

More Than the Face: Representations of Bodies in the Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Visual representations of bodies, in addition to those of faces, contribute to the recognition of con- and heterospecifics, to action recognition, and to nonverbal communication. Despite its importance, the neural basis of the visual analysis of bodies has been less studied than that of faces. In this article, I review what is known about the neural processing of bodies, focusing on the macaque temporal visual cortex. Early single-unit recording work suggested that the temporal visual cortex contains representations of body parts and bodies, with the dorsal bank of the superior temporal sulcus

Disrupted structural network of inferomedial temporal regions in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis compared with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) are two representative chronic inflammatory demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system. We aimed to determine and compare the alterations of white matter (WM) connectivity between MS, NMOSD, and healthy controls (HC). This study included 68 patients with relapsing-remitting MS, 50 with NMOSD, and 26 HC. A network-based statistics method was used to assess disrupted patterns in WM networks. Topological characteristics of the three groups were compared and their associations with clinical parameters were examin

Independent syntactic representation identified in left front-temporal cortex during Chinese sentence comprehension.

It has been well established that syntactic representation is independent of semantic representation in Indo-European languages, but it is unclear whether this is the case in Chinese. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study adopted a syntactic priming paradigm to investigate the neural basis of Chinese syntactic representation. A passive sentence was preceded by either a passive or an active sentence without repeating a verb or a pattern of agent-patient animacy, thus constructing primed and unprimed sentence pairs based on sentence structure. The fMRI data were collecte

White matter network disorder in mesial temporal epilepsy: An fMRI study.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) has been considered a network disorder disease in which brain regions extending beyond the epileptogenic zones are always affected. However, abnormalities in white matter (WM) functional networks and their associations with widespread network dysfunction are still being identified in mTLE. Accordingly, we investigated the altered functional activities in WM networks in mTLE using fMRI, which has recently been used to probe WM function. We collected resting-state fMRI data from 39 unilateral mTLE patients with hippocampal sclerosis and 29 healthy controls. E…
