Autologous tendon graft for non-union distal clavicle fracture in a patient with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Fracture of distal-end accounts for 20% of all clavicle fracture. In the situation of impaired bone healing environment such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), nonunion rates after surgery might increase. In the case where bone healing is unexpected, biological healing with tendon graft could be an alternative method to maintain bone reduction. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62-year old male with a history of end-stage CKD presented to the hospital with pain, wound, and deformity on the right shoulder. The patient have had surgery in the past 4 months and resulted in a non-union fracture o

Flexor Tendon Rupture After Distal Radius Malunion Associated With Electromyographic Abnormalities: A Case Report.

CASE: A 63-year-old woman with a history of a malunited distal radius fracture presented with left hand pain and inability to flex her thumb, index, and middle fingers. Anterior interosseous neuropathy was suggested because of abnormal electromyography findings. However, magnetic resonance imaging later revealed flexor tendon ruptures. A distal radius corrective osteotomy with autograft and volar fixation was performed with tendon transfers and carpal tunnel release. CONCLUSIONS: Attritional flexor tendon rupture after a nonoperatively managed distal radius fracture is rare but remains an imp

Nontraumatic Chronic Subcutaneous Extensor Digitorum Longus Tendon Rupture in a Recreational Runner: A Case Report.

CASE: Nontraumatic chronic subcutaneous rupture of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) tendon is rare. A 66-year-old man, recreational runner, suddenly injured his EDL tendon while walking. We surgically reconstructed the ruptured EDL tendon with a free palmaris longus tendon graft. During the surgery, an osteophyte was found to have penetrated the ankle joint capsule and was considered the cause of the tendon rupture. Active toe extension was restored, and the patient completed a 10-km race at 2 months postoperatively. CONCLUSION: EDL tendon reconstruction using a free palmaris longus tendon

Successful reconstruction of distal peroneus longus tendon dislocation associated with a split lesion - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Peroneal tendon injuries are one of the differential diagnoses in lateral ankle and rearfoot pain. While partial tears are not uncommon, peroneal tendon dislocation at the peroneal tubercle is very rare. Until now, only three papers have been published, presenting five cases of peroneus longus tendon dislocation over the peroneal tubercle. This report adds a previously undescribed case of a peroneus longus tendon split tear that was partially dislocated and entrapped over the peroneal tubercle. The respective operative approach and the outcome are described. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2

Assessment of common extensor tendon elasticity in patients with lateral epicondylitis using shear wave elastography.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the role of shear wave elastography (SWE) in patients with lateral epicondylitis (LE) by assessing the common extensor tendon (CET) elasticity. METHODS: A total of 62 unilateral LE patients were enrolled. Shear wave speed (SWS) and the thickness of CET in both elbows, along with the involved elbows with pre- and post-treatment, were obtained by SWE. The differences between groups, inter- and intra-observer agreements, and diagnostic accuracy were analyzed with a paired t-test, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) cur

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection of shoulder joint after latissimus dorsi tendon transfer: A case report.

Infection rates of arthroscopic procedures have been consistently reported at approximately 1% and are even less common in shoulder arthroscopy (0.3%). We are unaware of any prior reports of infection associated with an arthroscopic-assisted latissimus dorsi transfer and report on a 60-year-old male who experienced this event. At the 2-month follow-up, he reported an infection of the shoulder joint, characterized by a fistula on the portal scar. Laboratory tests revealed a Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection which was treated with arthroscopic irrigation and debridement of the shoulder joint foll

Extensor Tendon Rupture Due to Advanced Kienböck's Disease: Two Case Reports and a Review of Literature.

Extensor tendon rupture of the finger is a very rare complication of Kienböck's disease. However, advanced Kienböck's disease can cause an attritional rupture of extensor tendons due to displaced lunate fragment. An extensor tendon of the thumb is frequently damaged in the distal radial fracture, and an extensor tendon of the fifth finger is mainly ruptured in arthritis of distal radio-ulnar joint. On the other hand, the extensor tendons of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers are usually ruptured in advanced Kienböck's disease. We report two elderly patients diagnosed with advanced Kienböck's disease…

Possible effect of morphological variations of plantaris muscle tendon on harvesting at reconstruction surgery-case report.

PURPOSE: Seemingly a well-known, weak, and vestigial plantaris muscle should not be a revelation. However, recent studies have shown that this structure is incredibly underestimated and perceived only as an infirm flexor of the talocrural joint, the knee joint or a great source of graft tissue. Usually, the origin of this inconspicuous muscle begins at the lateral supracondylar line of the femur and the knee joint capsule. It continues distally, forming a long and slender tendon. In most cases, it inserts onto the calcaneal tuberosity on the medial side of the Achilles tendon. However, many mo

Global Responses of Il-1β-Primed 3D Tendon Constructs to Treatment with Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields.

Tendinopathy is accompanied by a cascade of inflammatory events promoting tendon degeneration. Among various cytokines, interleukin-1β plays a central role in driving catabolic processes, ultimately resulting in the activation of matrix metalloproteinases and a diminished collagen synthesis, both of which promote tendon extracellular matrix degradation. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is often used for pain management, osteoarthritis, and delayed wound healing. In vitro PEMF treatment of tendon-derived cells was shown to modulate pro-inflammatory cytokines, potentially limiting the

Thiel embalming: Quantifying histological changes in skeletal muscle and tendon and investigating the role of boric acid.

Cadaver preservation methods impact their utilization in anatomical research and teaching. Thiel-embalmed cadavers show flexibility, however, the cause remains poorly understood. This study aimed to (1) describe qualitative and quantitative histological differences between Thiel-embalmed and formalin-fixed skeletal muscle and tendon tissue; (2) investigate whether boric acid in Thiel solution is solely responsible for modification of tissues; and (3) explore whether the modifications observed could potentially explain the mechanisms underpinning flexibility of Thiel cadavers. Skeletal muscle a
