Distinct Disease and Functional Characteristics of Thyroid Surgery-Related Vocal Fold Palsy.

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic trauma induced by thyroid surgery is the most common etiology of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). UVFP after t … ery has a distinct clinical presentation with relatively high involvement in the eSLN, better voice acoustics, longer waiting time before asking for evaluation, and less impact on quality of life. The involvement of eSLN in these patients further impaired their voice. Early referral is suggested for these patients, especially with suspected eSLN injury.

Comparing the auscultatory accuracy of health care professionals using three different brands of stethoscopes on a simulator.

BACKGROUND: It is considered standard practice to use disposable or patient-dedicated stethoscopes to prevent cross-contamination between patients in contact precautions and others in their vicinity. The literature offers very little information regarding the quality of currently used stethoscopes. This study assessed the fidelity with which acoustics were perceived by a broad range of health care professionals using three brands of stethoscopes. METHODS: This prospective study used a simulation center and volunteer health care professionals to test the sound quality offered by three brands o…

Effects of ear-canal standing waves on measurements of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions.

At frequencies above 3 kHz, standing waves in the ear canal complicate calibration of stimulus sound-pressure levels (SPLs) for measurements of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). In the literature, two stimulus-presentation strategies have been used for DPOAE measurements. In the "in-the-ear adjustment" strategy, the voltage command to the speakers is adjusted to maintain a constant stimulus SPL across frequency at the DPOAE-measurement microphone. In the "iso-voltage" strategy, the voltage presented to the speakers is held constant across frequency, on the basis of the assumpt

Clinical significance of probe-tone frequency ratio on distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

Parametric variations in the ratio of primary-tone frequencies were explored to optimize the amplitude of the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission for clinical purposes. Ten ears from 5 normally hearing human subjects were examined with primary tones geometrically centred around the standard audiometric frequencies of 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 kHz. The distortion product at the frequency 2f1-f2 (f1 < f2) was measured at six probe tone frequency ratios (f2:f1) varying between 1.15 and 1.40 using equal level primaries of 75 dB SPL. The results showed that a single f2:f1 ratio betwe

Anthropogenic noise affects insect and arachnid behavior, thus changing interactions within and between species.

Urbanization and the by-product pollutants of anthropogenic activity pose unique threats to arthropods by altering their sensory environments. Sounds generated by human activities, like construction and road traffic, can oversaturate or interfere with biotic acoustic cues that regulate important ecological processes, such as trophic interactions and the coordination of mating. Here, we review recent work exploring how anthropogenic noise impacts inter-intra-specific interactions in insects and arachnids. We outline empirical frameworks for future research that integrate three mechanisms by whi

New applications of sonoelastography in rheumatology: where are we now?

Ultrasound elastography (UE) is a non-invasive imaging method that allows the assessment of tissue elastic property. Different UE techniques are currently available (i.e. strain UE and acoustic radiation force impulse UE), with several potential clinical applications. Recent studies investigated the role of UE in two systemic rheumatic diseases and psoriasis. This research added interesting information to the already known applications of UE in the assessment of tendinopathies. In SS, acoustic radiation force impulse UE has shown a potential role in the diagnosis of the disease, with lower sen

[Smartphone app-supported approaches to tinnitus therapy].

In recent years, applications (apps) for medical purposes have been developed and introduced, including apps that perform diagnostics and documentation for hearing loss and tinnitus in combination with smartphones. Even therapeutic apps, particularly for chronic tinnitus, have been launched. This review discusses the existing scientific literature for these smartphone applications. For tinnitus, Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy has been developed and evaluated. For tinnitus therapy, introduced apps combine acoustic stimulation and music, or serve acoustic stimulation of cortical reg

[The relationship between the parameters of evoked otoacoustical emission and tympanometry in the children born with the extremely low body weight].

The objective of the present study was to elucidate correlation between the parameters of evoked otoacoustical emission at the distorsion product otoacoustic emissionen frequency (DPOAE) and the results of tympoanometry performed at the probe tone frequencies of 226 Hz and 1 kHz in the children born with the extremely low body weight. The results of the study give evidence of the moderate correlation dependence between the strength of the cochlear acoustic response at DPOAE and the cohlear response amplitude at the frequencies of 2 kHz and 6 kHz from TTP (r=0.3; p=0.000) obtained at the tympan

Experimental observation of precursor solitons in a flowing complex plasma.

The excitation of precursor solitons ahead of a rapidly moving object in a fluid, a spectacular phenomenon in hydrodynamics that has often been observed ahead of moving ships, has surprisingly not been investigated in plasmas where the fluid model holds good for low frequency excitations such as ion acoustic waves. In this Rapid Communication we report an experimental observation of precursor solitons in a flowing dusty plasma. The nonlinear solitary dust acoustic waves (DAWs) are excited by a supersonic mass flow of the dust particles over an electrostatic potential hill. In a frame where the

High resolution ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging of single cells.

High resolution ultrasound and photoacoustic images of stained neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes from a blood smear were acquired using a combined acoustic/photoacoustic microscope. Photoacoustic images were created using a pulsed 532 nm laser that was coupled to a single mode fiber to produce output wavelengths from 532 nm to 620 nm via stimulated Raman scattering. The excitation wavelength was selected using optical filters and focused onto the sample using a 20× objective. A 1000 MHz transducer was co-aligned with the laser spot and used for ultrasound and photoacoustic images, enablin

Diagnostic Distortions: A Case Report of Progressive Apraxia of Speech.

Apraxia of speech (AOS) can be the presenting symptom of neurodegenerative disease. The position of primary progressive AOS in the nosology of the dementias is still controversial. Despite seeing many specialists, patients are often misdiagnosed, in part due to a lack of quantitative measures of speech dysfunction. We present a single case report of a patient presenting with AOS, including acoustic analysis, language assessment, and brain imaging. A 52-year-old woman presenting with AOS had remained undiagnosed for 6 years despite seeing 8 specialists. Results of her MRI scans, genetic testing

Practical tips and tricks for assessing prosthetic valves and detecting paravalvular regurgitation using cardiac CT.

Paravalvular leaks are an uncommon but serious complication of prosthetic valves. Transthoracic echocardiography is used in the assessment of prosthetic valves but can be limited by acoustic shadowing from the prosthesis and poor acoustic windowing. Small case series have previously shown cardiac CT to have promising results in detecting paravalvular leaks. We assessed 32 valves in our institution on cardiac CT using echocardiography results as standard and developed methods for improved evaluation of prosthetic valves. These include optimizing prescan drug therapy for heart rate control, opti

Reflection of plane elastic waves in tetragonal crystals with strong anisotropy.

Propagation and reflection of plane elastic waves in the acousto-optic crystals tellurium dioxide, rutile, barium titanate, and mercury halides are examined in the paper. The reflection from a free and flat boundary separating the crystals and the vacuum is investigated in the (001) planes in the case of glancing acoustic incidence on the boundary. The analysis shows that two bulk elastic waves may be reflected from the crystal surface. The energy flow of one of the reflected waves in paratellurite and in the mercury compounds propagates in a quasi-back-direction with respect to the incident e

Case report: Multidetector CT presentation of a parachute-like asymmetric mitral valve.

A 24-year-old man with a complaint of exertional dyspnoea had a Grade III/VI apical pansystolic murmur on physical examination. He underwent a transthoracic echocardiogram, which revealed a funnel-shaped mitral valve with moderately thick leaflet tissue and an eccentric orifice, as well as a bicuspid aortic valve. The mitral valve was mildly stenotic and severely regurgitant. Although demonstration of a single papillary muscle in the parasternal short axis view suggested a parachute mitral valve, the diagnosis was uncertain owing to poor echocardiographic acoustic quality. 16-row multidetector

Automatic detection of voice impairments by means of short-term cepstral parameters and neural network based detectors.

It is well known that vocal and voice diseases do not necessarily cause perceptible changes in the acoustic voice signal. Acoustic analysis is a useful tool to diagnose voice diseases being a complementary technique to other methods based on direct observation of the vocal folds by laryngoscopy. Through the present paper two neural-network based classification approaches applied to the automatic detection of voice disorders will be studied. Structures studied are multilayer perceptron and learning vector quantization fed using short-term vectors calculated accordingly to the well-known Mel Fre
